Reflections ...for Greek and Roman historians, the ideal eyewitness was not the dispassionate observer but one who, as a participant, had been closest to the events and whose direct experience enabled him to understand and interpret the significance of what he had seen. ...Involvement was not an obstacle to a correct understanding of what they perceived as historical truth. It was rather the essential means to a correct understanding of what had really happened. - Richard Bauckham, Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony The popular teaching is that you cannot believe [the] records we are given, but that does not matter at all as long as you get the “religious value” of the stories. It does not matter whether or not Jesus was born of a virgin; it does not really matter whether or not He worked miracles or atoned for our sins by His death. It certainly does not matter whether He arose in body from the tomb. The facts do not matter, they say, as long as you have the religious value of Jesus and His teaching. In a sense, these apostles preached nothing but the facts, which to them were all-important. They kept on talking about “the things which we have seen and heard.” The experience of these men came directly out of the facts about which they were constantly speaking. If your experience does not result from the facts of Christ’s life and death, it is not a Christian experience. - Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Courageous Christianity

Sacrament of Baptism Anna Lynn Duncan Daughter of Stephen & Caroline Duncan Edward Trammel Reynolds Son of Ned & Cameron Reynolds Parental Vows 1. Do you acknowledge your child’s need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, and the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit? 2. Do you claim God’s covenant promises on their behalf, and do you look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ for their salvation, as you do for your own? 3. Do you now unreservedly dedicate your child to God, and promise, in humble reliance upon divine grace, that you will endeavor to set before them a godly example, that you will pray with and for them, that you will teach them the doctrines of our holy religion, and that you will strive, by all the means of God’s appointment, to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord? Congregational Do you as a congregation undertake the responsibility of assisting these parents Vow in the Christian nurture of these children? Silent Confession & General Prayer of Confession Father, we confess that we have tried to hide from you, because we know we disobey. We have lived for ourselves and apart from you. We have turned from our neighbors and refused to bear the burdens of others. We have ignored the pain of the world and passed by the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed. In your great mercy, forgive our sins and free us from selfishness, that we may obey your commandments; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
Assurance of the Gospel Romans 3:23-26 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus. Hymn of the Gospel Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder Let us love and sing and wonder, let us praise the Savior’s name! Words by John Newton, 1774 He has hushed the law’s loud thunder, Music by Laura Taylor, 2001 He has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame. ©️2001 Laura Taylor He has washed us with his blood. He has washed us with his blood. Music He has washed us with his blood. He has brought us nigh to God. Let us love the Lord who bought us, pitied us when enemies, Called us by his grace, and taught us, gave us ears and gave us eyes: He has washed us with his blood. He has washed us with his blood. He has washed us with his blood. He presents our souls to God. Let us wonder; grace and justice, join and point to mercy’s store; When through grace in Christ our trust is, Justice smiles and asks no more. He who washed us with his blood, he who washed us with his blood, He who washed us with his blood, has secured our way to God. cont. on next page
Let us praise, and join the chorus, of the saints enthroned on high; Here they trusted him before us, now their praises fill the sky: “Thou hast washed us with thy blood. Thou hast washed us with thy blood. “Thou hast washed us with thy blood; thou art worthy, Lamb of God!” Intercessory Prayer & the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
