Saint Matthew’s Church The Last Sunday of Epiphany Transfiguration Sunday February 27, 2022 • Eleven O’clock Morning Prayer The Organ Prelude The Processional Hymn #129 “Christ Upon the Mountain Peak” BCP Confession of Sin 11/12 Invitatory 13/14 Venite (standing, sung) O come, let us sing unto the LORD; * let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving * and show ourselves glad in him with psalms. For the LORD is a great God * and a great King above all gods. In his hand are all the depths of the earth * and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, and he made it, * and his hands prepared the dry land. O come, let us worship and fall down, * and kneel before the LORD our Maker. For he is Lord our God, * and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth stand in awe of him. For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth, * and with righteousness to judge the world and the peoples with his truth. 3
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Psalm 99 (standing, read responsively by half-verse) 1 The Lord is King; let the peoples tremble; *he sits between the cher- ubim; let the earth shake. 2 The Lord is great in Zion *and high above all peoples. 3 They shall give thanks unto his Name, which is great and wonderful; *holy is he and mighty, a King who loves justice. 4 You have established equity; *you have executed judgment and righteousness in Jacob. 5 O magnify the Lord our God, *and fall down before his footstool, for he is holy. 6 Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his Name, *they called upon the Lord, and he heard them. 7 He spoke to them out of the cloudy pillar, *for they kept his testimo- nies and the law that he gave them. 8 You heard them, O Lord our God; *you forgave them, O God, yet punished their evildoings. 9 O magnify the Lord our God, and worship him upon his holy hill, *for the Lord our God is holy. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The First Lesson: Exodus 34:29-35 ESV p 75 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testi- mony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face 4
shone, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Mo- ses talked with them. Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would re- move the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him. Jubilate (standing, sung) Be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands; * serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; * it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; * be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious; his mercy is everlasting; * and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 12:27-13:13 ESV 959 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has ap- pointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then mira- cles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnest- 5
ly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all myster- ies and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dim- ly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. A Song of Praise (standing, sung) Benedictus es, Domine Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers; * praised and exalted above all for ever. Blessed art thou for the name of thy Majesty; * praised and exalted above all for ever. Blessed art thou in the temple of thy holiness; * praised and exalted above all for ever. Blessed art thou that beholdest the depths, and dwellest between the Cherubim; * praised and exalted above all for ever. Blessed art thou on the glorious throne of thy kingdom; * praised and exalted above all for ever. Blessed art thou in the firmament of heaven; * praised and exalted above all for ever. Blessed art thou, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; * praised and exalted above all for ever. 6
The Gospel: Luke 9:28-36 ESV 867 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who ap- peared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accom- plish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Je- sus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen. The Sequence Hymn #137 “O Wondrous Type! O Vision Fair” BCP The Apostles’ Creed 20 The Prayers 21/22 The Collect of the Day (kneeling) O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 7

Hal Hopson (Based on I Corinthians 13) Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire, and have not love; my words are vain, as sounding brass, and hopeless gain. Though I may give all I possess, and striving so my love profess, but not be given by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin. Come, spirit, come, our hearts control, our spirits long to be made whole. Let inward love guide every deed. By this we worship and are freed. Amen.
