St. Alban's proclaims to all, through word and deed, the grace of God in Jesus Christ. The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday Choral Eucharist, Rite II June 5, 2022 1 1 : 1 5 AM
St. Alban’s is an Episcopal Church, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Worship in our tradition is liturgical, which means that we use written prayers. This is an ancient and biblical way to pray. The liturgy makes worship something everybody does, not just the minister up front. It helps us when our own words fail. It ensures we receive a steady diet of God’s Word. And it reminds us every week of God’s grace in Jesus Christ. NEW HERE? Please scan the QR code or complete the “Hello” card located in the pew racks so we can get to know you. If you have any questions, our ushers and ministers are here to help. After the service, stop by our welcome station for a St. Alban’s tote. How We Worship: We worship in heart, body, and mind. To help, we sometimes kneel or stand. At other times we make the sign of the cross, as denoted by the symbol, to remind us Christ is for us. Such actions are not required. In the Episcopal Church, “all may, some should, none must.” ADVENT | CHRISTMAS | EPIPHANY | LENT | EASTER | PENTECOST Our church follows the Christian year (also called the Church year). For millennia, Christians have used this system to organize each year around the life of Christ. The Church Year begins with Advent, as we wait for the arrival of Jesus celebrated at Christmas. During Epiphany, we celebrate Christ revealing himself to the world. In Lent, we prepare for the remembrance of Christ's death during Holy Week and resurrection at Easter. On Pentecost, we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit, who sustains us in our life in Christ during the season known as Ordinary time. Restrooms: Located in the narthex (the lobby) at the back of the church; additional restrooms are in the Welcome Center Coffee Hour: Join us after the 7:30 and 9:00 AM services for coffee in the Welcome Center. INFO FOR PARENTS There are coloring materials and other activities in a basket in the narthex to help keep children mindful of worship. Nursery (ages 0-4): Open for 9:00 AM, 11:15 AM, and 5:30 PM services in The Crèche. After announcements, some parents/caregivers choose to pick up their children from the nursery to bring them to Communion; others choose to pick them up after the end of the service. Children’s Chapel (ages 4-9): At the 9:00 & 11:15 AM services, children are dismissed before the Gospel reading for children’s chapel in the Godly Tots room in The Crèche. They return before Communion. Nursing Mothers: Higgins Parlor, in the Welcome Center, is open for those who desire a private space for nursing. 2

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. THE WORD OF GOD The First Lesson Acts 2:1-21 Lector A reading from Acts. When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' " Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 8
The Psalm is read responsively by whole verse. Psalm 104:25-32, 34 Benedic, anima mea 25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great. 27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it. 28 All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season. 29 You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. 30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. 31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth. 32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works. 34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being. 9
The Epistle Romans 8:14-17 Lector A reading from Romans. All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Children’s Blessing & Dismissal Children are invited forward for a Blessing before following the Cross to Children’s Chapel located in The Crèche. The children return before Communion. Please stand as all sing the gradual hymn. As the Gospel book is brought into the congregation, please turn and face the reader. Gradual Hymn Come down, O Love divine Hymnal 516 10
Words: Bianco da Siena (d. 1434?); tr. Richard Frederick Littledale (1833-1890), alt. Music: Down Ampney, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. 11
The Gospel John 14:8-17, 25-27 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you." "I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid." Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman 12
All stand. The Nicene Creed BCP 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Catholic means universal. 13
All kneel. The Prayers of the People Form V In peace, let us pray to the Lord, saying, "Lord, have mercy". For the holy Church of God, that it may be filled with truth and love, and be found without fault at the day of your coming, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; for Andy, Jeff, Hector, and Kai, our Bishops; for Aaron, Kara, Oscar, and Preston our Priests; for Alberto, our Deacon; for Karen, our Seminarian; the search for our next Associate Rector and for all the holy people of God, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the mission of the Church, that in faithful witness it may preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For those who do not yet believe, and for those who have lost their faith, that they may receive the light of the Gospel, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the world, especially Ukraine, that a spirit of respect and forbearance may grow among nations and peoples, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For those in positions of public trust, especially Joe, our President; Greg, our Governor; Dillon, our Mayor; and all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; that they may serve justice, and promote the dignity and freedom of every person, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For a blessing upon all human labor, and for the right use of the riches of creation, that the world may be freed from poverty, famine, and disaster, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, and all who suffer; for refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. 14
For this congregation, that we may be delivered from hardness of heart, and show forth your glory in all that we do, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For our enemies and those who wish us harm, and for all whom we have injured or offended, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all who have commended themselves to our prayers; for our families, friends, and neighbors; that being freed from anxiety, they may live in joy, peace, and health, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For those on our parish prayer list; those in our parish family celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in the coming week; our local mission partners: Cedar Ridge Elementary, The Cove, Mission Waco, and Caritas; for our church plant, La Iglesia Episcopal El Buen Pastor; and our sister parish of All Saints, Nambiti, Malawi, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all who have died in the communion of your Church, and those whose faith is known to you alone, that, with all the saints, they may have rest in that place where there is no pain or grief, but life eternal, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, have mercy. Rejoicing in the fellowship of St. Barnabas and all the saints, let us commend ourselves, and one another, and all our life to Christ our God. Lord, have mercy. The Celebrant adds a concluding collect. 15
Confession of Sin The Deacon says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Minister and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Celebrant says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Comfortable Words Called the “comfortable words” since the 16th century because of their ability to give comfort, these Bible verses (Matthew 11:28, John 3:16, 1 Timothy 1:15, 1 John 2:1-2) are a cherished part of Anglican liturgy. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The people stand and greet one another in the name of the Lord. All sit. Parish Announcements Infants/Toddlers at Communion: At this point of the service, some parents/caregivers choose to pick up their children from the nursery and bring them into the worship space for Communion. Offertory Anthem Spirit of God Donald Hustad (1918-2013) Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from sin, through all its pulses move; stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art, and make me love Thee, as I ought to love. I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay, no angel visitant, no opening skies; but take the dimness of my soul away. Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh; teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; teach me the patience of unanswered prayer. Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love, one holy passion filling my frame; The baptism of the heav'n descended Dove, my heart an altar, and Thy love the flame. 17
