ITINERARY Sydney The Harbour City Please note that site visits and speakers are subject to availability and may change. Final itineraries will be provided as the program departure date draws near. DAY 1 After an early arrival and a morning settling in, undertake a walking tour on which you will learn about the original inhabitants of the Sydney basin. Your indigenous guide will explain aspects of Aboriginal identity, political history, protocols and the issues currently facing Aboriginal communities. DAY 2 Enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the iconic Sydney Opera House, followed by a free afternoon exploring the cityscape of Sydney. You may like to hop on a bus to Bondi Beach; meander through the streets of the historic precinct, the Rocks; meet some of Australia’s charismatic megafauna at Taronga Zoo; or even book in to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. DAY 3 You will commence your engineering site visits today in this dynamic global Australian city. Visits may include a tour of Sydney Metro during which you will learn about its technology and full automated operations; a tour of Hawker Pacific, the leading integrated aviation solutions provider in the Asia Pacific region; or a visit to Barangaroo, Sydney’s massive urban regeneration project that showcases how city populations can live sustainably. DAY 4 Today you will likely visit a software engineering company, where you will hear about engineers’ creation of a powerful platform for unstructured data processing. You will have a few hours of free time before heading to the airport to fly to New Zealand.
ITINERARY CHRISTCHURCH The Garden City DAY 5 On your first morning in New Zealand you will embark on an engineer-led tour of the central city to discover the effects of the Canterbury earthquakes as well as innovative seismic design first-hand. Conclude the day looking for the endangered endemic kiwi bird during a tour of Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, and afterwards, take part in an authentic Maori cultural experience including a powhiri greeting ceremony and traditional hangi dinner buffet. DAY 6 Visit the University of Canterbury for a tour of the Civil and Natural Resource Engineering Department and their expansive Structural Engineering Laboratory. In the afternoon, you will learn about a local company’s innovations in cutting-edge robotic technology, followed by a hands-on session. DAY 7 Start the day with a site visit of the Lyttelton Port and enjoy lunch and a presentation with the port’s engineering manager. This will be followed by a factory tour of a New Zealand-based social enterprise that is developing and implementing an efficient, adaptable, environmentally friendly and socially empowering solution to the global housing crisis. DAY 8 Before departing Christchurch, you will stop for a site visit at Air New Zealand’s Engineering hangar. Witness the changing landscape as you travel by coach across the Canterbury plains and into New Zealand’s Southern Alps.
Hands On Minds On
ITINERARY AORAKI MT COOK DUNEDIN The Cloud Piercer Pride of the South DAY 9 You will embark on one of New Zealand’s most famous hikes, the Hooker Valley Track, alongside the country’s tallest mountain, Aoraki Mt Cook. After lunch you will journey to Dunedin, with a stop at the mysterious Moeraki Boulders en route. DAY 10 This morning you will hear a presentation by members of Engineering Dunedin Incorporated (EDI), a support organization for engineering manufacturers in the region. This will be followed by a site visit to Farra Engineering, a manufacturer of distillery equipment. Finally, in the afternoon, you will travel around the Otago Peninsula to see local wildlife, including sea lions, penguins and a range of other seabirds. DAY 11 Today’s activities are comprised of two site visits to leading Dunedin engineering companies, the first a specialist switchboard builder and system integrator that offers a range of engineering services, and the second a designer and manufacturer of automated production, robotics and process machinery. In the afternoon, you will travel to Queenstown, named such for Queen Victoria because it was regarded as a place of such beauty it was “fit for a queen”.
ITINERARY QUEENSTOWN The Adventure Capital DAY 12 Visit the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds where vehicles, car parts and tires are tested under freezing conditions. You will view the testing facilities, including the snow flats and snow tunnel. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to learn about the art and science of making handmade artisan spirits at a distillery that uses equipment made by Farra Engineering, visited two days earlier in Dunedin. DAY 13 Enjoy your free day in Queenstown. You may like to check out the Skyline Gondola, Ziptreck Ecotours or some of the short iconic hikes that start right from Queenstown’s centre. The day will finish with a farewell group dinner. DAY 14 Return back home on the group flight, or contact STA Travel to arrange to extend your stay for personal travel.
