St. John’s Exhibition St. John’s Episcopal School is proud to once again host an exhibition featuring photographs from Minnie and Bill Caruth’s world travels. This is the sixth consecutive year the St. John’s community has experienced the world through Mr. Caruth’s lens. Along with this annual installation, Mr. Caruth shares stories about his travels with students, enhancing their understanding of social studies, world history and literature and piquing their curiosity about these places. China 2008 India 2009 Japan 2010 Texas 2011 Venice 2012 Displayed in the Middle School, St. John’s permanent collection includes a photo from each exhibition. Previous exhibitions included works from travels throughout Texas; exotic adventures to China, India and Japan; and an invigorating visit to Carnivale di Venezia. The Caruths have generously authorized the sale of prints from ALASKA: The Last Frontier to help underwrite the exhibition and support St. John’s Episcopal School. From Mark Crotty, Head of School Done right, meaningful education engages children in holistic, integrated and developmentally appropriate exploration of essential human qualities – intellectual, spiritual, physical, artistic, emotional, relational, ethical. Over time, children grow to understand the world beyond themselves, their relationship to it, and how to make a positive contribution with their unique talents. This ongoing process of self-discovery inspires them to continue learning long after leaving school. At St. John’s, we strive for these ideals every day. Mr. Caruth’s willingness to share his talents and world view with our students is another way we nurture their develop- ment. His ability to engage students through his photography and encyclopedic knowledge of the world is delightful. Our students look forward to this annual meeting with great anticipation. We are grateful for Mr. Caruth’s ongoing relationship with St. John’s. (cover photo 0665 Landscape Study Near Juneau)

About the Artist William Caruth combines his passions for travel and art to create engaging photographs of the countries he visits. Born in Dallas, Texas, Mr. Caruth’s love of travel started early. When he was just eight weeks old, he had the distinction of being the youngest traveler to fly on American Airlines. Upon graduating from high school, he had an opportunity to travel to Europe, and since then, in addition to returning to Europe several times, he has visited Chile, Argentina, India, Egypt, Jordan, Russia, Guatemala, China, Japan, Venice, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The vivid photographs he has taken on these trips capture the imagination and provide a glimpse into other cultures. Inspiration For Mr. Caruth, traveling is about learning. A true historian and perpetual student, he “wants the foreign” when he visits a country. He thrives on learning about the different ways people experience life and often seeks local experts to guide his visits and help him experience the country behind the tourist attractions. Many elements influence Mr. Caruth’s selection of a travel destination. Some locations are selected because “God has created a beautiful place,” and others for historical significance or cultural differences. His wife, Minnie Caruth, adds, “Every day is an adventure with Bill.” Storytelling through Art From telling stories of Texas Rangers and outlaws to his daughter when she was young to capturing the essence of a culture with his camera, Mr. Caruth is a born storyteller. When he visits St. John’s, he captivates students with his travel stories and photographs. He hopes his art and lectures will help children gain insight into other cultures and learn to appreciate their own. “When people see my work, I’d like them to enjoy the pictures and learn something,” he says. On the Horizon “I can’t tell you my favorite place because I haven’t been to them all yet,” says Mr. Caruth.
