2 This 2 week programme is designed to ignite curiosity in students aged 12-17. It gives them the chance to learn incredible skills in a fun, stimulating and friendly environment, in a premium, contemporary campus in the heart of South Dublin. We offer a complete package, which includes return transfers from/to Dublin International Airport, the highest quality STEAM course, an exciting programme of activities and excursion and the option of host family or residential accommodation.
STEAM is an educational 4 approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. Maximum Number of Students per course: 18 Age Range: 12-17 year Minimum Level of English Required: B1 2 Week programme Dates: Monday 13th– Friday 24th July 2020 OPTION 1: 09.00-12.30 – STEAM (including 1 x 30 minute break) 14.00-16.00 – Afternoon Activities (Sports/Art/Drama/Dance/Cultural Visits) OPTION 2: 09.00-12.30 – GENERAL ENGLISH (INCLUDING 1 X 30 MINUTE BREAK) 13.30 – 17.00 – STEAM (INCLUDING 1 X 30 MINUTE BREAK)
5 COURSE OUTLINE: Drones and Aerodynamics: Program drones to fly & rescue. Learn Aerodynamics and design models that can run on water or land. Use design thinking to solve complex problems and engineer intuitive solutions. Robotics: Build and program advanced robots, solve real life challenges by coding and testing Mechanics: Build simple and powered machines, clocks, cranes, cars, and much more! Modelling: Learn how to prototype designs; testing and modifying them through a series of challenges 3D Printing and Design: Use your imagination to design and create your 3D printed models using CAD software and 3D printer Engineering: Use state-of-the-art technology to create and personalise components - cut by Laser, designed by you Arts: Create unique and innovative products reflecting your own creativity. Solve real-life problems using design thinking and a variety of materials – from wood to metal to vinyl and more! COURSE OBJECTIVES: Become competent in handling state-of-the-art machinery and technology safely Learn how design and technology work together to change objects from ordinary into extraordinary Use creative thinking to change how we use and view the world Gain valuable problem-solving skills and improve collaboration Become confident in collaborating on project work and communicating their thinking Each task in the programme leads to a finished product, building to a complete Design portfolio for students.
6 ABOUT THE COURSE DIRECTOR Andrew is an international educator with over a decade of experience leading cutting-edge Design programmes in Switzerland, Bermuda, the UK and Ireland. His work in Design was recognised by the prestigious International Baccalaureate Programme, where he became initially Lead Educator for Design and later Chief Examiner. His passion is for Design in every form – landscape, systems, digital, food and product design. He has recently returned from Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he further developed his understanding of what an excellent STEAM programme should be. Andrew Bateson
7 Overview The SWAN STEAM course is held in Nord Anglia International School in Leopardstown, D18, just 8km outside central Dublin with easy access to the city and surrounded by lush countryside. We offer first-rate sports, music, drama and cultural activities in a dynamic and vibrant environment. Outstanding sports facilities within the campus allow students to try out a wide range of sports. It boasts a multi-purpose, flood-lit category four astro turf pitch, a state of the art indoor gym, an outdoor basketball court, a dance studio, an auditorium, a theatre, and music pods. Leopardstown is a residential suburb in South County Dublin nestled at the foot of the Dublin mountains, just 15 minutes from the sea and less than 25km from Dublin International Airport. Safe and well located, it is a quiet and comfortable area with impressive transport links. There is a LUAS (Green Line) light rail station at Central Park just 10 minutes walk from the campus,the Luas will reliably get you into Dublin City Centre in 25 minutes. Leopardstown is also on several Dublin Bus routes.
9 HOST FAMILY ACCOMMODATION: Shared Room Full Board - breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal with the family (Optional: €50 per week for hot lunch in school Monday – Friday, this must be booked before arrival) Students will travel by public transport from host family to the school campus CHOOSE RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION: Single rooms Shared toilet & shower facilities Full Board – breakfast and evening meal in residence restaurant, hot lunch in school restaurant Students will travel by private coach organised by Swan from the residence to the school campus Evening Activity Programme *Travel Passes are NOT included in the above package *Travel Passes are necessary for travel between the host family and the school and also for any off-campus activities
