PATRICIA ELLEN EMILY SMITH 4th September 1931 - 24th April 2022 Pat was a faithful member of St Peter’s for many decades. Her involvement included being a lesson reader and welcomer, member of parish council, and member of the book club. Her gardening knowledge helped sell many a plant at our fetes. Pat was St Peter’s representative for the World Day of Prayer for many years, cajoling volunteers into action. Our prayers are with her children, Kerry, Colin, Judy and Geoff and their families. The Funeral Service will be held at St Peter’s on Monday, 16 May 2022 at 1.30pm. Refreshments will be provided after the service. Please allow time to find parking prior to the start of the funeral service. What we know of St John was that he was the son of Zebedee, a fisherman and a Galilean, and that he was one of the small inner group accompanying Jesus during some of the times he withdrew for prayer and meditation. John isn’t mentioned in the Fourth Gospel but is often identified with the author of that Gospel as well as with ‘the disciple whom Jesus loved’. The Book of Revelation is also thought to be by him. In the Acts of the Apostles St John appears, together with St Peter, healing the lame man at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple, and bestowing the gift of the Holy Spirit on Philip’s Samaritan converts. In art and poetry St John is often represented by an eagle. Each of the four Evangelists was linked to one of the four symbolic creatures in the Book of Revelation, drawn from the imagery of Ezekiel. The eagle was thought to be appropriate to St John, because, according to St Jerome, he ‘soared aloft’ to contemplate the divine nature of the Saviour. In keeping our Patronal Festival we affirm our commitment to the life and mission of the community of St John’s. We acknowledge and give thanks for all this place has meant to us over the years and renew our pledge to become even more involved and active in its mission over the forthcoming year. The Very Reverend Dr John Shepherd 2 |
The bell rings. PROCESSIONAL HYMN | NEH 197 For all the saints who from their labours rest, who Thee by faith before the world confessed; Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress, and their Might; Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia, Alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest: Sweet is the calm of Paradise the blest. Alleluya! Alleluya! But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on His way. Alleluia, Alleluia! From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia! Words: W. Walsham How (1823-97) | 5 Music: Sine Nomine, R. Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
Priest +Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All Blessed be God’s Kingdom now and for ever. Priest The Lord be with you All and also with you. CONFESSION Minister God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, welcoming sinners and inviting them to the Lord’s table. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness. All Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy) 6 |
ABSOLUTION Priest Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: +pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 7
All Amen. COLLECT Priest Let us pray. Shed upon your Church, O Lord, the brightness of your light, so that we, being illuminated by the teaching of John the Evangelist, may walk in the light of your truth, and be brought to the fullness of eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Priest Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the Book of Proverbs: The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth— when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world’s first bits of soil. 8 |
When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race. Proverbs 8.22-31 Reader For the Word of the Lord, All thanks be to God. PSALM | 23 Cantor The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He maketh me lie down in sweet pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. R 3 He restoreth my soul, He leadeth me in paths of righteousness in His name’s sake. R | 9
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me, Thy rod, and Thy staff, they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me, in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over. R 6 For goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. R SECOND READING A reading from the first letter of John: We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us— we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1.1-5 Reader For the Word of the Lord, All thanks be to God. 10 |
G R ADUA L H Y MN | NE H 225 Give me the wings of faith to rise within the veil, and see the saints above, how great their joys, how bright their glories be. Once they were mourning here below, And wet their couch with tears; they wrestled hard, as we do now, with sins and doubts and fears. I ask them whence their victory came; they, with united breath, ascribe their conquest to the Lamb, their triumph to his death. They marked the footsteps that he trod, his zeal inspired their breast, and, following their incarnate God, possess the promised rest. Our glorious Leader claims our praise for his own pattern given; while the long cloud of witnesses show the same path to heaven. Words: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Music: Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) | 11
G O SP E L Rem a in s t a n din g . Minister The Lord be with you All and also with you. Minister The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All +Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; John 20.2-8 Minister This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. SERMON - Bishop David Murray AFFIRMATION OF FAITH All stand. Minister Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. All We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; 12 |
through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the +resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Sit or stand. Priest Jesus, friend of all the world, you have compassion on all who come to you for help; hear the prayers we bring for your people. The intercessor leads the prayers. The response is: Intercessor Lord, in your mercy, All hear our prayer. The intercessions are concluded with the words: Priest Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. All Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. | 13
GREETING OF PEACE All stand. Priest We are the body of Christ. All His Spirit is with us. Priest The peace of the Lord be always with you All and also with you. All exchange a greeting of peace. OFFERTORY HYMN | NEH 202 Word supreme, before creation Much he asked in loving wonder, Born of God eternally On thy bosom leaning, Lord! Who didst will for our salvation In that secret place of thunder, To be born on earth, and die; Answer kind didst thou accord, Well thy saints have kept their station, Wisdom for thy Church to ponder Watching till thine hour drew nigh. Til the day of dread award. Now ’tis come, and faith espies thee: Thee, the Almighty King eternal, Like an eagle in the morn, Father of the eternal Word; John in steadfast worship eyes thee, Thee, the Father’s Word supernal, Thy belov’d, thy latest born: Thee, of both, the Breath adored; In thy glory he descries thee Heaven, and earth, and realms infernal Reigning from the tree of scorn. Own, one glorious God and Lord. Amen. He first hoping and believing Did beside the grave adore; Latest he, the warfare leaving, Landed on the eternal shore; And his witness we receiving Own thee Lord for evermore. 14 | Words: John Keble (1792-1866) Music: Picardy; French carol, probably 17th century; Tiersot’s Mélodies, Paris, 1887
