I know because her feast day is also my birthday! July 22. Most often when people think of her, they think of her as either a prostitute or great sinner. While it is not impossible that she is the sinful woman who washed the feet of Jesus, this identification is not certain. What we do know is that she was the first eyewitness of the Resurrection, which we know from the account in John 20:1-18), and that she was one from whom Jesus had cast out seven demons (see Mark 16:9 and Luke 8:2). While we don’t know for certain what this meant, we do know that Jesus had delivered her from great challenges in her life. He had given her freedom, and certainly, she was eternally grateful that she had received her life back. Reflecting on her in this month of July, we can take with us two important lessons. The first is the importance of relying upon the power of God to deliver us from evil. As we celebrate the birth of this nation in July, we are reminded of the importance of praying for our country. There are so many forces of evil confronting us. We must turn to the power of Jesus to exorcise the demons that seek to harm our country and turn us away from the Father. It is the power of prayer, the power of Jesus, that will save us. The second lesson is the perpetual reminder of the need for gratitude for the blessings that God bestows upon us. I doubt that a day went by without Mary Magdalene praising God for what He had done for her. We must also be continuously grateful for the blessings we receive, especially the spiritual gifts of faith and having God’s Grace in our lives. Summer is a time for barbecues, vacations, and trips to the beach. It is also a time for us to think about this nation in which God has placed us. St. Mary Magdalene reminds us of the necessity of relying upon the Lord to face the challenges before us, and also the importance of always being aware of and expressing gratitude for God’s blessings. Have a great summer. Let us pray for one another and for our country. Msgr. Ken 2

Prayer for the Canonization of Blessed Michael McGivney Founder of the Knights of Columbus God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 10
Supreme Chaplain's Monthly Challenge “Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick — no food, no sack, no money in their belts.” (Gospel for July 11, Mk 6:7-8) Jesus sends his disciples out on their mission with few provisions. It would be unthinkable for us today to take a trip without carrying cash or a credit card, making lodging arrangements or packing a suitcase. What are we to make of Christ’s instructions, and how do they relate to our own baptismal mission? I offer two thoughts. First, we must trust that God will provide for our needs as we carry out his work. Second, we must not be encumbered by “excess baggage” — anything in our lives that can hold us back from carrying out God’s will. Challenge by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori: This month, I challenge you to spend an hour each week in eucharistic adoration, reflecting on relying on God alone and becoming detached from the things of this world. Second, I challenge you to work with your pastor to implement the Faith in Action Holy Hour program. Questions for Reflection: Are you aware that Jesus is sending you on a mission in the world? Do you truly trust God to provide for your needs along the way? What “baggage” are you carrying that is holding you back from fulfilling God’s mission for you? 11
ADOPT A SISTER ADOPT A SISTER DONATION The Adopt a Sister program was an idea born out of great need as aging Sisters and retirement costs hit home. Today, our Sisters still rely on the generosity of their adopted family to take care of them. And, in gratitude for your faith and friendship, your “adopted” Sister will pray for you each day for a year. Join us in giving back to those who have given so much. You too can Adopt, check it out by going to https://salesiansisters.org/donation/ Thank you and God Bless. 12
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come unto him and dine with him and he with Me. ~ Revelation 3:20 Hello my Brother Knights, I wanted to invite you to a retreat that I attended that really helped me. We’re so fortunate at St. Mary’s, to have this annual retreat. It’s called the Light of the World Parish Retreat, and it happens in the parish center in Manahawkin. I had to tell you all about it, and invite you, because I have been changed because of it. The Light of the World Retreat (which this year happens Saturday July 31st and Sunday August 1st) is a kerygmatic retreat. It’s about that First Proclamation of the Good News by Jesus to His apostles. It’s about my relationship, your relationship with God. It’s about how much God loves us. It’s about so many good things. When I reflected on this experience, this opportunity of grace, I thought of you. Sometimes we are so busy with our day to day lives that we don’t even have time to recognize what (or who) we are missing. Life’s distractions seem to be getting more intense; this retreat offers a respite from all of that. If you are interested in attending the Light of the World Retreat, please call the rectory at (609) 698-5531, and tell them you are signing up for the retreat! Someone will reach out to you with further details. I hope to see and you and your family then! Sincerely, Ed Massari I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. ~ John 8:12 13
