CALLED, GIFTED, SENT FORTH We, the people of God, led and inspired by the Holy Spirit, fed by the Word and the Eucharist, strive to share our faith and live our lives daily as disciples of Christ. MYSTICAL UNION Mysticism sounds like a big word, but no, it is just as an ordinary experience in Christian spirituality as the symbol of a vine plant. Jesus in his parables always used ordinary symbols in daily life that his audience would easily connect themselves too: a mustard seed, a catch of fish, a field, a vine branch. Jesus invites us to remain connected to him like a branch to a vine in order to stay alive and bear fruit, “for apart from me, you can do nothing”. This connectedness to Him is a mystical experience. When we connect ourselves to Jesus in prayer, in listening to his Word, in receiving the sacraments, we are in a mystical union with Him. A mystical experience like this in our daily spiritual life should be as normal as our breathing. That is how we draw our energy and life from this mystical union with Jesus, just a branch remains attached to the vine for its life and vitality. Many people find different alternatives to draw their life energy from. Many especially the young may find it from connecting themselves to drug and alcohol addiction. This only leads them to self-destruction eventually. There are people who may find their life energy from practising different ideologies, but only later on find the dissatisfaction in their shortcomings, because after all they are man made. In this mystical union with Christ, we are pruned by his Word. Pruning may cause pain but it is necessary for the branch to bear fruit. Pruning away those actions, words, and thoughts that are not conducive to life- giving. “You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you” Jesus said. The fruit of this mystical union with Christ is LOVE. For us to bear fruit of love, let’s always remain in Him and let his words remain in us. Fr.
