me karen MY TREND JOURNEY From home trends forecaster to lead designer, Karen top 10 TIMELESS is the chieft creative principle and trend thought leader at Karen B. Wolf Interiors. TRENDS Design is led by culture and this year we have witnessed a seismic shift in how we view and value our homes. What we want from our homes has been reimagined and never before have Americans been more clear on what matters and what does not. The world pandemic has defined design trends into hyper focused movements centered around comfort, escape, organization, wellness, distraction and multi-function. When we can control so little, our homes have become the epicenter of what we can control. A refuge, sanctuary, retreat, place of work, safety and shelter the 2021 home is more important than ever. Formerly educated as a fine artist with a BFA from University of Michigan, Karen combined her arts with a masters in consumer behavior from Northwestern University with specific training in trends analysis.

@studiohdesigninc P8 architecten @echemartinez pandemic micro trends AGILITY Surviving the pandemic means being flexible and creative with our home. Multi-functional spaces, modular furniture and carved out spaces for secondary activities are trending for 2021. The open concept once sought after for young families is now being subdivided and smaller task spaces through-out the home are sought after. The 2021 garage is no longer utilitarian. Considered a pandemic life saver try using it for a kid or adult gym, office, bar or second hangout area. Additional emerging spaces include indoor gardens, art and crafting areas, air purifying ventilation saunas, underground bunkers, year round tents, pergolas and tree houses, speakeasy basement bars, and more.
@laclosetdesign @allisoncampbelldesign @hudsoninteriordesigns pandemic micro trends OCD 1 in 4 Americans suffer from anxiety. While alcohol consumption is up during the pandemic so is organizing. Sheltering-in lead to more time enabling the “Home Edit” trend to become even more dominant than pre-Covid. From color coding to labeling the pantry is not the only area getting some love. Closets, photos, art rooms, and shelves are all being approached with mindful and creative styling moments.
Lay-Z-Spa @solostove @wonderforest pandemic micro trends OZARK CHIC To put it politely, anything fun no matter how it looks goes in Ozarck Chic. An above ground pool in a 5MM dollar home? OK. An inflatable hot tub in your living room? Why not. Indoor and outdoor lights that change color? Cool. Your dad’s recliner in that newly renovated family room. You win. Beer pong with your teenagers? Of course, what is underage. Multicolor and mismatched Adirondack chairs – the more color the better. A Guinness pub table in your dining room (finally a thing). And the list continues. If it’s fun, it really does not matter if it “goes”. For all of us designers, cringeworthy but true.
