T H E C O L L E C T O F T H E D AY Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Praise and glory to you, creator Spirit of God; You come like the wind of heaven, unseen, unbidden, Like the dawn you illuminate the world around us; you grant us a new beginning every day. You warm and comfort us. You give us courage and re and strength beyond our everyday resources. Be with us, Holy Spirit, in all we say or think, in all we do this and every day. People Amen. C E L E B R AT I N G T H E C O M I N G O F T H E H O LY S P I R I T The following service is a creative adaptation of the traditional vigil service for Pentecost. The Celebrant introduces the service with these words Dear People of God, before our Lord ascended into heaven, he left us with this promise: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Luke says that the Spirit came down on the disciples at Pentecost with power to open the gates of life to all nations and to make known to them the new covenant of God’s love. So it was that people of every language joined in singing one song of praise to God, and scattered tribes – restored to unity by the Spirit – became one Body in Christ. Let us hear again the story of the gift of the Holy Spirit, and then listen to how the Spirit has moved poets and writers to sing her praises. •4• fi
THE FIRST READING The Coming of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles read by Josephine Koo A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it lled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of re, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were lled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” Reader The Word of the Lord. or Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. THE THIRD READING Suddenly There Came a Sound, by Andrew King read by Susie Gri th It was one of those days where leaves are thrashed from tree branches writhing under a racing sky, and my childhood friend playing outdoors with me wondered: does the wind ever stop blowing? And does it stop somewhere, he asked again, or just keep going around and around the world? Back then I said I didn’t know but now I know there came a day when a wind began in a certain house that lled with a light like ame, and that wind had the roar of justice, and that wind had the rush of love, and that wind had the whisper of peace and compassion, and it carried the words of hope and joy to an anxious and needy world, and it was gentle enough to touch the wounded soul and strong enough to stir the ever seeking hearts of women and men, young and old, from city to distant shores, and it pulled down walls of distrust and fear and threw open doors of possibility, and oaks of hatred have bent in its path and palisades of pain have fallen to its strength and new life has spread like scattered seed and yes, my friend, that wind circles the world and no, it has never stopped blowing. THE FOURTH READING Try to Praise the Mutilated World, by Adam Zagajewski read by Sheri Reda Try to praise the mutilated world. Remember June’s long days, and wild strawberries, drops of wine, the dew. The nettles that methodically overgrow the abandoned homesteads of exiles. You must praise the mutilated world. You watched the stylish yachts and ships; one of them had a long trip ahead of it, while salty oblivion awaited others. You’ve seen the refugees heading nowhere, you’ve heard the executioners sing joyfully. You should praise the mutilated world. Remember the moments when we were together in a white room and the curtain uttered. Return in thought to the concert where music ared. You gathered acorns in the park in autumn and leaves eddied over the earth’s scars. Praise the mutilated world and the gray feather a thrush lost, and the gentle light that strays and vanishes and returns. THE RESPONSE Veni, Sancte Spiritus Taizé Community •8• fl fl
Renewal of Baptismal Vows The Celebrant addresses the people in these words As we renew the vows we made when we were baptized by water and the Holy Spirit, we invite the Spirit’s presence with us today: Like the beams that from the sun pierce the blackness of the night, come to us, O promised one, Spirit, light. Pure as saints that have attained, clad in brightness for attire, cleanse our souls by vileness stained, Spirit, re. Stronger than uplifted arm in the tumult of the ght, shield our timid souls from harm, Spirit, might. Soothing as the calm that falls when wind and billows cease, comfort us when fear appalls, Spirit, peace. Come, O gracious Spirit, come, we would have you for our guest; make our souls your chosen home, Spirit, blest. -Adapted from an anthem by Leo Sowerby Celebrant Do you rea rm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? People I do. Celebrant Do you believe in God the Father? People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Celebrant Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? People I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He su ered under Pontius Pilate, was cruci ed, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. •9• ff fi ffi fi fi

Celebrant We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing: • 12 • fl fi
S A N C T U S & B E N E D I C T U S • S -1 2 8 Setting: William Mathias Celebrant Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacri ce of his life, and to be glori ed by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, cruci ed and risen, who was and is and is to come, we o er to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacri ce. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. • 13 • ff fi fi fi fi
Celebrant In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. Celebrant As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD If You Believe and I Believe Traditional Zimbabwe; arr. by John Bell The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept, after which all sing: All are invited to receive communion. These are the gifts of God, and we are the people of God. Holy Communion is given with these words: The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen. • 14 •
