The Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Entrance Song Canticle Of the Sun Haugen Gloria Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will. 1.We praise you, 3. For you alone are the Holy One, we bless you, you alone are the Lord, we adore you, you alone are the Most High, we glorify you, Jesus Christ, we give you thanks for your great glory, with the Holy Spirit, Lord God, heavenly King, in the glory of God the Father. O God, almighty Father. Amen. 2. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
First Reading Numbers 11:25-29 The LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. Taking some of the spirit that was on Moses, the LORD bestowed it on the seventy elders; and as the spirit came to rest on them, they prophesied. Now two men, one named Eldad and the other Medad, were not in the gathering but had been left in the camp. They too had been on the list, but had not gone out to the tent; yet the spirit came to rest on them also, and they prophesied in the camp. So, when a young man quickly told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp,” Joshua, son of Nun, who from his youth had been Moses’ aide, said, “Moses, my lord, stop them.” But Moses answered him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets! Would that the LORD might bestow his spirit on them all!” Psalm Psalm 19 Guimont The law of the LORD is perfect; it revives the soul. The decrees of the LORD are steadfast; they give wisdom to the simple. The fear of the LORD is pure, abiding forever. The judgments of the LORD are true; they are, all of them, just. So in them your servant finds instruction; great reward is in their keeping. But who can detect their own errors? From hidden faults acquit me. From presumption restrain your servant; may it not rule me. Then shall I be blameless, clean from grave sin. Second Reading James 5:1-6 Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you; it will devour your flesh like a fire. You have stored up treasure for the last days. Behold, the wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud; and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter. You have condemned; you have murdered the righteous one; he offers you no resistance. Gospel Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 At that time, John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us. Any- one who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut if off. It is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. Better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, where ‘their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’” Homily Deacon Steve Wodzanowski Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us (men) and for our salvation he came down from heaven, All bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. All stand upright. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Offertory Song Lord, To Whom Shall We Go Joncas

Recessional The Spirit Sends Us Forth To Serve Dufner/AZMON Liturgy & Worship A Message from Bob McCaffery-Lent, Director of Liturgy, on the Church Sound System Dear friends, I have heard a number of complaints from parishioners who are having difficulty hear- ing and, in particular, understanding the spoken word during mass. I have been working each week to try to understand why this is happening and to resolve the issue. Churches, especially larger ones like St. Joseph, with high ceilings and hard surfaces, are known to be great spaces for music, but challenging for intelligibility of the spoken word. That’s what sound reinforcement systems are for - to increase intelligibility while not sacrificing the beauty of music resonating throughout the space. However, sound systems are quite com- plex and need constant attention, occasional updating and regular fine tuning by people trained to do so. As with so many things these days, it’s been hard to get some expert help in, but I am happy to say that we DO have an appointment for a consult with a very reputable local company to come to St. Joseph during the first week of October and work with us to make any necessary updates and to fine tune the system so that everyone can hear, regardless of where you are sitting. In the meantime, our parish AV team will continue to be attentive to the situation and do what we can to keep things working well and to listen to any concerns that arise. Secondly, we are also looking at updating our “hearing impaired system” since the one we have, which was once state of the art, is no longer and there is much better technology available. Hopefully it will include a system that can automatically connect to your hearing aids via Bluetooth or a loop system. I will share more information about that once we have it. Everyone needs to be able to hear what’s going on! Peace, Bob McCaffery-Lent, Pastoral Assistant for Liturgy and Music

Faith Justice Becoming Anti-Racist Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:20, 26 – “As it is there are many members, yet one body. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it.” Quote: “For Native Americans, Columbus Day has long been hurtful. It conjures the violent history of 500 years of colonial oppression at the hands of European explorers and those who settled here — a history whose ramifica- tions and wounds still run deep today.” --Leila Fadel on NPR Morning Edition, October 14, 2019 Commemorating Indigenous People’s Day On October 11, we will celebrate Indigenous People’s Day in honor of the Native Peoples who first inhabited and stewarded the land of the Americas, including the lands that later became the U.S. These First Peoples, still suffering the effects of colonization, genocide, and attempts at erasure, are still here, working to heal from genera- tional trauma and showing resilience and vibrancy of culture. To commemorate Indigenous People’s Day in alignment with Jesuit values we focus on four movements: listening to Native voices, educating ourselves, acknowledging and repenting of a devastating history, and taking action. Listen to Native Voices “Reconsider Columbus Day– A PSA-style video featuring multiple voices urging us all to abolish the holiday and use the day to learn Indigenous history. When We Were Alone - For Grades K-2. by David Alexander Robertson and Julie Flett (Illustrator) When a young girl helps tend to her grandmother's garden, she begins to notice things that make her curious. Why does her grandmother have long braided hair and beautifully colored clothing? Why does she speak another language and spend so much time with her family? As she asks her grandmother about these things, she is told about life in a residential school a long time ago, where all of these things were taken away. When We Were Alone is a story about a difficult time in history and, ultimately, one of empowerment and strength.

Rain finally. Jackets and sweaters. Back to school for many. And some questions to consider: What's it like for someone who spent the time away from school becoming comfortable with realizing they're gay, to come back into the classroom? Student or teacher? How about someone whose classmates last saw him as a boy, who returns to in person classes as the person she realizes she's meant to be? Dressing differently. Maybe a new name. Definitely new pronouns. Our Scripture is from Paul's Letter to the Galatians 3:28- "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
LGBTQ: It’s All About Love Telling Our Stories: Kevin Jennings is an award winning teacher, social activist and author. He was born the youngest of 5 children in a poor Southern Baptist family. His father was an itinerant preacher. The world he grew up in was racist and homo- phobic. He had family members in the Ku Klux Klan. Jennings remembers being constantly taunted and bullied. He got excellent grades in high school but was beaten by classmates for what they saw as effeminate behavior. Jennings attempted suicide when he realized he was gay. Jennings was able to graduate from high school after he and his mother moved to Hawaii. He was accepted into Harvard University, graduated Magnum cum laude in history and became a high school history teacher. In 1988 he started the nation's first gay-straight alliance in the high school where he was teaching. In 1990 he founded what became GLSEN [Gay, Lesbian and Straight Network] to address the problems of LGBT students. In 1992 Jennings was named one of 50 "Ter- rific Teachers Making a Difference". His book, One Teacher in Ten, was published in 1994 and reflected the time it was written. Many contributors were closeted. Some used pseudonyms for themselves, their schools, and their communities for fear of repercussions. (I moved to Seattle in 1984. Teachers who marched in the first Gay Pride I attended here, wore paper bags over their heads for fear of being fired if they were identified.) A new edition, One Teacher in Ten in the New Millennium, was published in 2015. In it, LGBT Educators speak out about what's gotten better and what's not. Jody Sokolower wrote about her experience as a teacher in an article for the website "Rethinking Schools": "Are you married, Ms Sokolower?" One of Sokolower's students asked her that question one month into her first year of teach 7th graders. Sokolower knew she didn't want to teach from the closet, but how best to handle this? She explained "I have been with the same partner for a very long time, but we can't get married because we're lesbians. My partner's name is Karen and we have a daughter. She's 9." Immediately the questions and comments started. Sokolower told her students she wanted to answer their ques- tions but, "right now we're working on Africa". She asked them to think about appropriate questions and she'd save time to discuss this the next day. "I'll bring in pictures of my family to show you." And so the ongoing conversation started.
