Anglican Parish of Caloundra - Glasshouse Country The Churches of St Andrew’s Caloundra, St Thomas’ Mooloolah and the Mary MacKillop Centre Beerwah Martyrs of New Guinea 2 September 2018 Welcome to worship. We hope your time here will be a blessing for you. We would like to give you information about the various ministries of the Parish: please ask one of the Sidespersons for an information pack. The Memorial Candle this week burns in memory of Jim Smith lovingly remembered by Judy and family.
THE MARTYRS OF NEW GUINEA New Guinea, the second largest island in the world, was one of the main frontiers of Christian mission in the twentieth century because of the difficult terrain and the cultural diversity of its peoples, who speak some 500 distinct languages. Christian missionaries first began work there in the 1860s and 1870s, with only limited success. The Anglican mission began in 1891, and the first bishop was consecrated in 1898. Today the vast majority of Papuans describe themselves as Christians, a little over three percent of whom are Anglicans. There is a great deal of ecumenical cooperation among the Churches, particularly in the areas of health and education. Most of the rural health work, and nearly all of the training of nurses and community health workers, is carried out by the Churches. During the Second World War, the suffering of missionaries and of native people was severe. This feast day marks the witness of eight missionaries and two Papuan martyrs, who were betrayed by non-Christians to the Japanese invaders. The day also includes remembrance of the faith and devotion of Papuan Christians of all Churches, who risked their own lives to care for the wounded and to save the lives of many who otherwise would have perished. PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, by whose grace and power your holy martyrs triumphed over suffering and were faithful even to death: grant that we, who now remember them in thanksgiving, may be so faithful in our witness to you in this world, that we may receive with them the crown of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING Zephaniah 3: 14-20 A reading from the prophet Zephaniah Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgements against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord. Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God 2
Commentary: Zephaniah is thought to have prophesied during the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah at the very end of the 7th Century and the beginning of the 6th Century BC. The oracles against foreign nations were given against the background of the rising threat of the Chaldeans (Babylonians) towards Israel, but were also directed against all their surrounding neighbours. In this they have a resonance with present day events. The book ends on a triumphant note of the hope and promise of a golden age to come. PSALM 130 Response: Trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy. Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice; O let your ears consider well: the voice of my supplication………….Response If you, Lord, should note what we do wrong: who then, O Lord, could stand? But there is forgiveness with you: so that you shall be feared………….Response I wait for the Lord, my soul waits for him: and in his word is my hope. My soul looks for the Lord: more than watchmen for the morning, more, I say, than watchmen for the morning………….Response O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy: and with him is ample redemption. He will redeem Israel: from the multitude of their sins………….Response SECOND READING Romans 8: 33-39 A reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God 3
Commentary: In this chapter Paul describes the life of the Christian as a life of freedom immersed in the goodness of God. This gives us a confidence that is strengthened by the knowledge of what God has done, and will do in Christ. The two rhetorical questions at the heart of this passage receive the unexpressed answer ‘Nobody’ because the whole of our lives is in the hand of God, through Christ. The closing list of human experiences is certainly one familiar to the martyrs and confessors of all ages and stands as a reminder to us that nothing can touch the reality of God’s love for each and every one of his children. GOSPEL John 12: 20-32 Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Jesus said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” Alleluia! The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John, chapter 12, beginning at the 20th verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. ‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say – “Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’ Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Commentary: The ‘Greeks’ represent the non-Jews (‘gentiles’) from whom, at the time of John’s writing, the majority of early Christians were drawn. This paragraph as a whole is designed to show that the world-wide Christian mission pre-supposes the death and glorification of Jesus. Throughout the gospels the theme of the seed and sowing is used to describe the initial obscurity of the Kingdom of God waiting to be revealed. Would-be followers of Jesus must learn in some measure to renounce life. For some this might mean the ultimate surrender that leads to martyrdom 4

Charity of the Month—September School Chaplaincy (Scripture Union) SU QLD chaplains, or ‘chappies’, provide spiritual and emotional support to school communities. They are in the prevention and support business: helping students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness, to drug abuse, depression and anxiety. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for children and young people in crisis, and those who just need a friend. They also provide support for staff and parents in school communities. • More than 67% of Queensland State Chaplain Mike Turner Schools have a chappy. • That leaves around 400 state schools without a chappy! • SU QLD has placed chappies in 63% of all Queensland state primary schools and in 88% of all Queensland state high schools. • Right now, our chappies are serving more than 400,000 Queensland students. In the Glasshouse area, Mike Turner is the chaplain of Beerwah High & Beerwah Primary Schools. He works full time across the two schools providing emotional and spiritual support to students, staff and families. He will be joining us for the 9am service at Mary MacKillop on Sunday 9th September. In Caloundra, Paul Murray is chaplain at Caloundra State High School, and Emily Smith is chaplain at Caloundra State School. They will be joining us at our services at St Andrew’s on Sunday 23rd September. SU QLD support the chaplains by providing training, and some partial funding is provided by the Federally funded National School Chaplaincy Program. But to keep chappies in the schools, providing their essential work in bringing hope to a young generation, local support is needed. Please join this by supporting our charity of the month. More information about SU QLD chaplaincy can be found at: https://www.suqld.org.au/services/chaplaincy/ 9
