A ROUND THE T ABLE Rev. Denis B. Theroux, Pastor Second Sunday of Lent Dear Friends, I believe that God wants to share His glory or you might say His splendor with us! We get a glimpse of this when the disciples see Jesus trans gured in glory on the mountain. Luke's Gospel account tells us that Jesus' face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. Perhaps you remember that when Moses met with God on Mount Sinai the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Paul says that the Israelites could not look at Moses' face because of its brightness. In the incident today, Jesus appeared in glory with Moses, the great lawgiver of Israel, and with Elijah, the greatest of the prophets, in the presence of three of his beloved apostles. You may ask, so what’s the signi cance of this mysterious appearance? Jesus went to the mountain knowing full well what awaited him in Jerusalem--his betrayal, rejection and cruci xion. Jesus very likely discussed this momentous decision to go to the cross with Moses and Elijah. God, the Father also spoke with Jesus and gave his approval: This is my beloved Son; listen to him. The cloud which overshadowed Jesus and his apostles ful lled the dream of the Jews that when the Messiah came the cloud of God's presence would ll the temple again. While this occurred Peter, James, and John were asleep! Upon awakening they discovered the trans guration of Jesus along with Moses and Elijah. How much do we miss of God's glory and action because we are “asleep” spiritually? There are many things which can keep our minds asleep to the things of God: Mental fatigue and the "unexamined life" can keep us from thinking things through and facing our doubts and questions. The life of luxury can also hinder us from considering the challenging or disturbing demands of Christ. Prejudice can make us blind to something new the Lord may have for us. Even sorrow can be a block until we can see past it to the glory of God. So, I ask you…Are you spiritually awake? Peter, James, and John were privileged witnesses of the glory of Christ. We, too, as disciples of Christ are called to be witnesses of his glory. We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. The Lord Jesus wants to reveal his glory to us, his beloved disciples. Will you seek his presence with faith and awe…a profound reverence? And so I pray, "Lord, keep me always alert and awake to you, to your word, your action, and your daily presence in my life. Let me see your glory." God’s Blessings, Father Denis THANK YOU KATHY!! A few weeks ago, Kathy Sanderson let me know that she will retire as our Director of Music and Liturgy at the end of June. Kathy has given 100% of her time, talent and treasure to OLV. She has been a long-time Parishioner, member of the choir for a good number of years, an accompanist for several other directors and nally serving us for the past 17 years as Director! No words can express my THANKS and APPRECIATION. Her job will be posted soon, and I’ll keep you up to date on our progress of nding a new Director. Kathy, may you be BLESSED for your goodness!, Fr. N ow that we have sung the Lenten Gathering Rite “No Greater Love” and will do so un l Palm Sunday, I also like to choose a Communion Song that we will sing every week during Lent. This year it is #836: We Remember, We Believe. This song es into the Holy Thursday Mass of the Last Supper when Jesus asks that we “Do this in remembrance of me.” Every week as we sing it, we should remember that Last Supper, the days that followed and what it has meant to the world, and how it has been changed. Thomas J. Porter wrote the lyrics and composed the music for this song in 1997. He composes solely for GIA publica ons while he is the Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. Kathy Sanderson, Music Director OLV HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRY Lent Thoughts "Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white." On this Second Sunday of Lent we are invited with Peter, John and James to 2 0 2 1 Catholic experience a moment of transforma on. They see Jesus in His Divine Glory for a bit, serviceS appeal but then Jesus takes them back down the mountain; back to everyday life. During This year the Archdiocese this Second Week of Lent think about the moments in your life when Jesus may have shown His glory to you in a special way. And then think about what you did with that of Detroit has set our quota at moment. Like the disciples here, we are to take the trans gura on moments of our $234,319. OLV SCHOOL NEWS HELLO FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH BY MRS. CAROL ANN WHITED • To say we are all thrilled that it is March and the sun has been shining is an understatement. Spring is on the horizon and middle school is excited! Here are some of the things that we have been prac cing in Math class: • My On-level 8th grade and Advanced 7th grade students have been working on an important concept that they will be seeing more of next year in Algebra 1: Graphing Linear Equa ons. Whether it be working with slope and using it to compare real-life scenarios, or wri ng and using equa ons to model situa ons, they are ge ng a good start on something that they will be delving deeper into in high school. • My On-level 7th grade and Advanced 6th grade students are soon going to start their Right Triangles Unit, which focuses mainly on square and cube roots, irra onal numbers, the Pythagorean Theorem, and nally Trigonometry! SOH CAH TOA is introduced in 7th grade now…can you believe it?! • Last, my Honors 6th grade students will be star ng their unit on Surface Area and Volume, which will be a nice break from the equa ons and graphing unit they are currently nishing up. Join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Since 1833, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been servicing those in need. Lent is a call not just to “give up something” (fasting) but more important to “give something for the poor” (almsgiving). Throughout our Parish there are individuals and families who need help. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. Through your generosity, OLV’s SVdP Ministry helps individuals and families, our Neighbors, who come to us for assistance. For those Neighbors whose needs extend beyond OLV SVdP Conference’s financial abilities, we partner with Northville Civic Concern to provide assistance…and they are always in need of donations. This Lent, please consider answering your doorbell by donating food and paper products to Northville Civic Concern. THANK YOU!! If you would like information on OLV’s SVdP Ministry, please leave your name and contact information on the OLV SVdP Hotline (248) 349-2622 or e-mail to: stvincent@olvnorthville.net; and a Vincentian will call you.
