TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME| AUGUST 22, 2021 VIGÉSIMO PRIMER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO | 22 DE AGOSTO DE 2021 PASTOR’S CORNER We know that the number 666 means trouble. It shows up in the Apocalypse, the last book of the Bible in chapter 13, where beasts are rising up out of the sea and the earth in rebellion against God. Chapter 14 describes the victorious lamb with those who follow him, but prior to that introduction John at the end of 13 presents the number 666 as a code allowing commerce and engagement with the beast, rebellion against God. Even as through the centuries there has been investigation into what this number of the beast means, in our Sunday reading today we have another intriguing encounter with this number. Since we’re arriving at the end of John, chapter 6, and John 6 is a very long chapter, we read from the verse today of John 6:66. And what does that verse say, at the end of Jesus’ long presentation of his gift of himself to us in his body and blood, his sharing heavenly life with those who will receive him? John 6:66 reads: “As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.” Since the enumeration of chapters and verses happened centuries after the Scriptures were written, we can see this coincidence and being exactly that, a coincidence. But nevertheless, it’s striking that just as this number in Revelation signifies rebellion against God, here in John it describes rejection of God’s gift. Each Sunday, Jesus wants to share his body and blood with us. The world and the sea, and the beasts that rise from them, give us an attractive option of rejecting God’s gift from heaven. But unlike those of John 6:66, who reject Jesus’ teaching on eating his body and blood, we can say with Peter, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” NEW MASS SCHEDULE | Saturday | Sabado: 8:00 am NUEVO DE MISAS CONFESSION SCHEDULE | HORARIO DE CONFESIÓNES Saturday Vigil/ Vigilia del sábado: 6:00 pm Bilingual | Bilingüe Wednesday | Miércoles: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm Sunday | Domingo: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday | Jueves, Viernes y 8:00 am Bilingual | Bilingüe Sábado: 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm 10:00 am English 12:00 pm Español Please be sure to check the parish website for any changes. TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME| AUGUST 22, 2021 VIGÉSIMO PRIMER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO | 22 DE AGOSTO DE 2021 Rincón Del Pastor Sabemos que el número 666 significa problemas. TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME| AUGUST 22, 2021 VIGÉSIMO PRIMER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO | 22 DE AGOSTO DE 2021 LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD DIARIA: RECONOCE A DIOS EN TUS MOMENTOS ORDINARIOS Sumisión como corresponsabilidad. If there was ever someone who deserved superiority, isn’t it the God who let Himself be nailed to a tree, who gave so freely of His life, His body, His blood, His everything? TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME| AUGUST 22, 2021 VIGÉSIMO PRIMER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO | 22 DE AGOSTO DE 2021 THE GOD OF CHOICES to obey the will of God, but still, He did not force it For Sunday, August 22, 2021 upon her. He gave her a choice. 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Ironically, it is the devil who doesn’t seem to want to give us a choice — probably because he knows that if we had a choice, a real and fair choice, we would never decide to be separated from the love of our Creator, the only One in whom our restless hearts can ever find rest. It is the devil who wins souls through deceit and coercion, who preys on feelings of desperation, isolation, and confusion. In today’s Gospel, we see many of Jesus’ disciples reject him because they could neither understand nor accept the teaching about eating his flesh and drinking his blood. Instead of mocking, chastising, or berating them, Jesus instead shows gentleness, and asks his remaining disciples if they, too, wish to leave. There was a time in my life when I thought that Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom perhaps I would be happier without religion. I was shall we go? plagued by doubts. I was tired of fighting them, and You have the words of eternal life. We have come tired of this idea that because I submitted to to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy religion, I was not “making my own choices.” I One of God.” wanted to be the one in charge.
