Welcome
Welcome to the Green Door Art Trail, 2021.
Already it feels to have been a roller-coaster ride with expectations and predictions
changing every couple of days. Back in Spring we had to decide whether to accept the
risk of a cancelled trail or face the even worse scenario of having cancelled the trail
only to find that people were moving freely again in September. At time of writing, it
seems that we made the right choice, so I do hope things continue to improve and we
can all enjoy an exciting and successful trail.
Lockdown has hit different artists in different ways. Some have found they could work
well in the enforced isolation; others have found it totally depressing and stifling. We
all now just want to get back to work and the stimulation of sharing it with others,
so please visit as many venues as you can and help to make this a new beginning for
everyone.

Artists I am a painter living between Kendal and the city of Hull. My
work is directly influenced by the landscape around me and I

My creative practice currently responds to notions of rural and
urban landscapes by conflating earlier memories and emotions
with direct experiences. I use mark-making, repetition and the
gestural processes associated with painting and printmaking.

My artwork is principally concerned with manmade structures: houses,
buildings and structures in the landscape and on the coast. Starting
with a drawing, I use the aquatint etching technique to make my
prints, as well as unique ‘Etching Plate Pendants’.

I am self-taught landscape artist based in Kendal, which affords
me close proximity to the geographical and natural drama of the
Lakeland Fells and Western Scotland. I have a tendency to paint
those mountains and valleys that have left a lasting and intimate
impression from previous encounters. For landscapes and seascapes,
I paint predominantly in acrylics through an extensive process of
layering to create texture and depth in mountainous or coastal
scenes, reflecting the harsh reality of the natural environment.

As a true Cumbrian born into agriculture, I draw my inspiration
from the ancient, barren landscape that my ancestors have
farmed and moulded for generations. Working intuitively, the
initial painting is changed many times to reveal a feeling for the
subject rather than explicit detail.

My creative process starts when I have fun covering my canvas
with colour. Texture of grasses, seeds or twigs may be added in the
process, and the outside world inspires my imagination to develop the
painting in an abstract way.

Briony studied Fine Art painting at Manchester Metropolitan
University and now lives and works in Levens. Inspired by walks in
the nearby Lake District and her travels to Scotland and its beautiful
islands her paintings are usually in acrylic inks or mixed media.
Most obvious in her work is the use of colour, line and contrast. Her
paintings are expressive and evoke feelings of being outside in the
wind, the sun or the rain. Paint is explored in a free and fluid way but
the basis of drawing is always apparent.

Making art is an itch that has to be scratched. I make reduction
linocut prints, taking inspiration from everywhere. Recently I have
been re-working old blocks and drawings making art for its own sake,
and to scratch that itch.

I hand build wildlife sculptures from clay. My inspiration comes from
animals and birds around me in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside
where I live. I am particularly fascinated by hares. I have worked in
Tanzania so some of my pieces have an African theme. Each piece
I make is individually made and unique. I try to give my sculptures
a personality of their own and create an essence of the animal or
person rather than being an exact copy.
