General Information 2018 Attendance School is a place of work and for our students to be successful in their work they must attend school whenever the College is open. Students must always, on the first day of return to College after any absence, bring a note signed by their parent, stating the reason for and date of their absence and give it to their tutor teacher. During school hours, students must be in class unless they have permission from their teacher to be out of class. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds without a pass. Ministry of Education guidelines recommend 90% or better attendance at school to succeed academically. Action under Tauranga Girls’ College Attendance policy will be taken where patterns of poor attendance are identified. Health Students who are ill during the day, or who are injured while at school, are attended to in the Health Centre. The Health Centre Co-ordinator, Mrs Janice Hardy, is available to students from 8.45am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday. Students who require medication during the day should leave it with Mrs Hardy. If a student is too ill to return to class, her parents will be notified to make arrangements for her transport home. The Student Health Co-ordinator is available to students and staff. Her role is to provide positive and on-going support and resources in the health area. A doctor runs a free adolescent medical clinic at the College every Thursday. Parental permission is required for students to access this service. The Health Co-ordinator is available to students through the Health Centre. Parents are asked to advise the College of any physical disability or medical condition which could affect the student at school so that correct first aid may be administered in cases of emergency. Uniform If correct uniform is not worn an explanation note may be addressed to the tutor teacher, however, the student will receive a detention until such time as correct uniform is presented. Passes Students who have dental, medical or specialist appointments during school hours must bring a note from their parents to the Student Reception at the Office no later than 9.00am in order for it to be signed and recorded. During interval and lunchtime, students are expected to remain on the College campus. If an emergency arises, a special lunch pass may be issued by the Deputy Principals. Students should always wear correct school uniform. In exceptional circumstances and for a very short-term, a pass to wear non-uniform items may be obtained from the Deputy Principals. Transport Bicycle racks are provided and are located off the 22nd Avenue entrance. Students must wear a cycle helmet and have a method of securing and identifying their cycle. Cycles are not to be ridden in the school grounds and the Road Code applies at all times. 8|Page
Cars may be used to travel to school if necessary and students who intend to use a car must register their intention with the Deputy Principal. Consent forms are available from the Student Office. Cars are to be used before and after school only and in accordance with licensing regulations. Street parking only is available for students, requiring students to show consideration for our residential and business neighbours. Students are not to park in the school grounds. Library The library is open from 8.00am to 4.00pm each day. To go to the library during class hours students need a note from their teacher. Newsletters A monthly newsletter from the Principal is put onto the website on the first Wednesday of the month. A weekly Principal’s letter is emailed to all parents, there is a Twitter feed @TGC Principal and a Facebook link at Tgc Principal. Hard copies are available. Also on the school website at www.tgc.school.nz are: educational news, student achievements, activities, and events. Other events and opportunities your daughter may be offered by her teachers will be communicated to you as they arise. Security Neither the use nor possession of cigarettes, cigarette lighters, alcohol or drugs are permitted at school, when in school uniform, or at any school function. Cell phones are not required at school. Any cell phone used or turned on during school hours may be confiscated. Lost or missing cell phones remain the student’s responsibility. All articles of clothing and possessions should be clearly marked with the owner’s name. Valuable articles and large sums of money should not be brought to school. Any fees or payments may be deposited at the Fees Office before school, at interval, lunchtime or after school. A limited number of lockers are available. If a student requires a locker she may apply to the Deputy Principal in charge of resources. A combination lock will be required. Any lost property should be reported immediately to a teacher and to the Nurse in the Health Centre, where lost property is kept. Named property is returned to students. If property is stolen it must be reported immediately to the teacher and to Student Reception. Students are not permitted to have visitors at school. Visitors for school purposes are required to sign in and out at our reception desk. 9|Page

Music Department Groups at Tauranga Girls’ College Each year the Music Department offers a range of musical activities based on the interests and strengths of the instrumentalists and vocalists that are in the College. In most years the groups offered are those that are listed below. Most of these groups perform at a very high standard and have won regional and national awards in competitions. To join any of these groups you will need to enrol when you come to school next year. The enrolment forms are found in the Music Department which is located behind the hall. Some of the groups will require an audition; others are open to anyone who wants to participate. If you aren’t sure whether you are good enough to get in and an audition is required, just have a try anyway. They are a really good way of becoming “known” in the College, and even if you don’t get selected, the staff will be able to advise you on how to improve and link you up with people who can help you. Groups for Singers There are several vocal groups at the College. The Luminosa Armonia Chorale is for singers who already sing well and want to improve their vocal skills. An audition is required for selection into this group. The Luminosa Armonia Chorale rehearses on a Tuesday evening from 7-8.30pm and have weekend workshops four or five times each year. The Choir is designed for less experienced singers who want to learn vocal technique. This group generally choose to sing lighter music and pop songs. The Choir rehearses once or twice a week at lunch break. The Barbershop Chorus is for singers who already sing well and enjoy choreographed performance. This is an auditioned group and will rehearse on a Thursday lunch break with sectional rehearsals one interval every week. Students are welcome to form Barbershop Quartets and the staff will support and tutor you at your request. For those who are more interested in jazz/contemporary/ musical theatre, there is a Contemporary choir called the “LBDs” who rehearse once a week after school. This group is auditioned but previous vocal training is not necessarily required. Groups for Instrumentalists Big Band This group plays jazz and is open to trumpet, trombone, sax, keyboard, brass, guitar and drum players, and singers. An audition is required and rehearsals are held every Monday from 7.30- 9pm. 16 | P a g e
Symphonic Band This is an all-comers group and is open to anyone who plays flute, piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, French horn, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, baritone horn, bass guitar, double bass, keyboard, percussion, or drums. Rehearsals are held every Wednesday at lunch break. Chamber Ensembles There are a number of chamber ensembles running in the College. These are small groups of instrumentalists ranging from 3-8 players. Some of the groups specialise in classical music, others in jazz. The student needs to be playing at Grade 4 level or higher on an instrument in order to participate in these groups. Entry is by audition and rehearsals are held after school one day a week. Some groups rehearse in the lunch break. Percussion Ensemble If the student plays drums, piano (keyboard) or percussion they may join this group. An audition is required and rehearsals are held once a week at lunch break. This group plays both serious and lighter music. Sax Combo If the student plays the saxophone, guitar, bass guitar, drums or keyboard then they may join this group. The group meets on a Friday at lunch break and plays mostly jazz music. An audition is required. Guitar Group This group is open to any students who already play the guitar with reasonable competency. Entry is by audition. Rehearsals are held on a Tuesday at lunch break Rock Bands The College runs several rock bands. One is specifically for people who want to write and play their own music, and the others are for musicians who like performing covers as well as original songs. If the student plays the bass, guitar, drums, piano (keyboard), or sing in a pop/rock style, then they are welcome to audition for these groups. They rehearse after school once a week. If the student wants to know more about these groups, the audition process, audition dates, rehearsal days etc, have a look at the Notice board in the Music Department, phone Miss Geor at the College or email Miss Geor at sgeor@tgc.school.nz. If the student wants to take music lessons at the College, read the information in the booklet about Itinerant Instrumental Lessons. If an instrument needs to be hired for next year, then again, phone or email Miss Geor at the College. 17 | P a g e
