FREE RESOURCES AROUND THE CITY AND SURROUNDINGS. Dear Brothers and Sisters, The advent of COVID-19 and its devastating negative consequences has been like nothing seen before in our lifetime. However, it is self -evident that we are stronger together as a Kenyan, and indeed as an East African family, than we are apart. Through this self-realization, we wish to share with you the following information which we hope will be useful to you or our fellow countrymen within the Greater Houston Area and surrounding cities. As we remain prayerful, we also hope that collectively we realize that we have each other as a resource even for the smallest need, and that we should reach out when one is in need. We remain to be a brother's and sister's keeper, even as we follow our federal and local guidelines on fighting the pandemic. Through the efforts of our Greater Houston Community leadership, we wish to share the following information on available resources as we fight this common enemy. This information shall be updated regularly and shared with our Kenyan & East African family accordingly. Please help with sharing it widely so that our family and friends can get the help that they may need. We pledge a solemn promise that any solicitation for help shall be kept in utmost confidence. If you have a query or suggestion, please email leadership team @ houstonkenyans@gmail.com Thank you and God bless! Houston Leadership Team.

SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION & EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION The Small Business Administration will resume accepting PPP loan applications on Monday, April 27 at 10:30 AM EDT from approved lenders on behalf of any eligible borrower. This will ensure that SBA has properly coded the system to account for changes made by the legislation. https://www.sba.gov/page/coronavirus-covid-19-small-business-guidance-loan-resources • The Paycheck Protection Program is a loan designed to provide a direct incentive for small businesses to keep their workers on the payroll. Small Business Administration (SBA) will forgive loans if all employees are kept on the payroll for eight weeks and the money is used for payroll, rent, mortgage interest, or utilities. Some important developments from the Texas Works Commission (TWC) https://www.kltv.com/2020/04/30/gov-abbott-announces-new-texas-workforce- commission-guidelines-unemployment/ • Announcing new unemployment benefit eligibility: Texans can continue to receive unemployment benefits during #COVID19 response if they choose not to return to work for certain health reasons. • AUSTIN - Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has issued new guidance to unemployment claimants concerning their eligibility for unemployment benefits should they choose not to return to work at this time due to COVID-19. Under this guidance, Texans can continue to receive unemployment benefits throughout the COVID-19 response if they choose not to return to work for certain reasons as specified by TWC. • "As the Lone Star State begins the process of safely and strategically opening the economy, our top priority is protecting the health and safety of all Texans—especially those who are most vulnerable to COVID-19," said Governor Abbott. "This flexibility in the unemployment benefit process will help ensure that Texans with certain health and safety concerns will not be penalized for choosing not to return to work." • Each unemployment insurance claim is currently evaluated on an individual basis. However, because of the COVID-19 emergency, the following are reasons benefits would be granted if the individual refused suitable work. • Reason for refusal: o At High Risk: People 65 years or older are at a higher risk for getting very sick from COVID-19. o Household member at high risk: People 65 years or older are at a higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19. o Diagnosed with COVID: The individual has tested positive for COVID-19 by a source authorized by the State of Texas and is not recovered.
o Family member with COVID: Anybody in the household has tested positive for COVID-19 by a source authorized by the State of Texas and is not recovered and 14 days have not yet passed. o Quarantined: Individual is currently in 14-day quarantine due to close contact exposure to COVID-19. o Childcare: Child’s school or daycare closed and no alternatives are available. Any other situation will be subject to a case by case review by TWC based on individual circumstances.
