TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL & SIXTH FORM CENTRE Part of Bordesley Multi Academy Trust www.trinity.worcs.sch.uk Newsletter No.5 July 2021 Dear Parents and Carers CONTENTS It has been quite a year. We started and ended the year in bubbles and had lockdown in the HEADTEACHER’S middle! Understandably this has curtailed many of the activities such as Sports, Music, Drama and Duke of Edinburgh Award, that are an important part of life at Trinity. MESSAGE With the announcement that schools will return to ‘normal’ from September I hope that we will be able to resume all of our after school and extra-curricular activities as well. SCHOOL NEWS Despite the restrictions placed upon schools we have done our best to offer students as many opportunities as we can. Much of this is included in this last newsletter of the year, and I hope SPORTS NEWS you enjoy reading it. We are saying goodbye to a number of staff this week: Mrs Lane who has been with us for 18 EPRAISE months as a Progress Assistant; Mr Geyl who has spent this year at Trinity as a Geography teacher and Mr Cross who has been at Trinity for three years teaching PE and is now moving to pastures new in Dubai. We are also saying goodbye to more longstanding staff; Mrs Burns who DATES FOR THE joined us as an NQT and is leaving teaching after nine years to work with the family business. DIARY Mr White is retiring after 26 years at the school. He joined the Abbey High School in 1995 as Head of PE and Manager of Community Developments, he continued this role from 2001 when COMMUNAL the school became Trinity High School. He was instrumental in gaining the Sportsmark awards NOTICES for the school, and also became Director of Studies for Sixth Form in 2008. From 2009-2013 he was heavily involved in the Initial Teacher Training in school and dedicated many hours mentoring and coaching the many PGCE student teachers that had placements at the school. Mr White retired from teaching in 2013 and became Post 16 Pastoral Manager. He will be greatly missed by all students, colleagues and in the wider community where he played a huge part in extra-curricular activities and sports fixtures with other schools. We wish Mr White a very happy and long retirement. We also have colleagues who will be getting married over the summer; we wish Miss Dilay, Miss Henman and Miss Styler very best wishes for their big day. They will be returning in September as Mrs Lall, Mrs Brooks and Mrs Loader respectively. Finally, I would like to thank you all for your support over the last year. It has made our jobs much easier. I hope you are all able to enjoy the summer break, and I look forward to seeing many of you in September. To those Year 11 and 13 students who are moving on to pastures new, we wish you all the best and look forward to hearing about your adventures and achievements. Best wishes Adrian Ward
SCHOOL SCHOOL DURING NEWS PANDEMIC The winter months unfortunately saw us having to provide virtual learning during periods of isolation and lock down. Here are a few of the ‘highlights’ during this time. A VIRTUAL LEARNING CURVE FOR US ALL It was a real learning curve for us all and whilst we experienced a few minor technical difficulties, our staff and students truly embraced a completely new way of teaching. We received lots of excellent and positive feedback, from parent and carers. I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you We have been so pleased and impressed and all of the teachers for all of your efforts during with how COVID is being dealt with at this period of isolation. Thank you to you all for Trinity, especially during this isolation what you are delivering in such challenging and periods. Your teaching staff have been unprecedented times amazing in their lessons and are so well organised. From Year 11 Parent/Carer From Year 9 Parent/Carer January saw us in another lockdown, which meant that …….. SOME TEACHERS STANDING, SOME SITTING DOWN … WELCOME TO THE NEW WORLD OF LIVE LESSONS! We started our online learning on 6th January, with a monumental effort from our students, parents, carers and staff to enable us to get this up and running so successfully. My daughter is thriving and enjoying the online lessons that have taken place during the pandemic, I think what you have provided so far has been exceptional' From Year 9 Parent/Carer
SCHOOL SCHOOL DURING NEWS PANDEMIC The return of our students on 8th March meant the start of the Lateral Flow tests, which ended on 19th March with us being able to test over 85% of our students three times. The testing team were encouraging and supportive and did a great job. The students BEFORE ... were fantastic in getting tested, and showed maturity and behaved impeccably. Students are now able to test at home. Many thanks to the students and parents/ carers who have supported the school in this. … after
SCHOOL NEWS SUCCESS FOR OUR PUBLISHED POETS Every year at Trinity we ask our Year 9 students to enter the ‘Young Writers’ charity poetry competition, where the top five students picked by the publishers have a chance of winning £100. With the lockdown that began before Easter, it meant that the competition was not able to run as normal this year. However, we did have time to send off a number of our best poems before the lockdown began and to our surprise the charity were able to publish their anthology, ‘Through Their Eyes’ in November. This did mean that the Year 9 students who wrote the poems were, of course, Year 10 students! Our congratulations went to: Freya H, Nathan R, Thomas S, Kirsty R, Luke M, Imogen K, Eva G, Liam C, Mohammed A, Mark T, Owen G, Leo K, Joey P, James C, Ethan K, Ameena I, Freddie C, Haris R, L Shakeel, Jacob L and Adam B.
SCHOOL NEWS BUSINESS MENTOR SCHEME Rachel Maclean, MP for Redditch, met with Max on Friday 27th November following his success from the Business Mentor Scheme. Max met, virtually, with Rachel, Julie from Heller and Simon from FAUN Zoeller (UK) Ltd and they talked about Max’s business which he set up with his mum, the sale of the business and his new venture. They commented how talented and inspiring Max is, who himself said he had gained a valuable insight into the business world from the mentor scheme. SPORTS TIES We were able to hold a ‘Covid secure’ assembly for students in November who had been awarded a sports tie. The black and silver sport ties were awarded for their hard work, dedication and representing the school, during many sports fixtures last year. The students will wear their sports ties with pride and be proud of what they have achieved.
LEARNING DURING LOCKDOWN REWARDING OUR HOME LEARNERS…. To encourage our students to work as hard as they could, we introduced our weekly Facebook reward post for outstanding work completed remotely. We had so many fantastic pieces to choose from, and each piece that made it onto Facebook received a £5 reward voucher. Here are a selection on work during this time, which we think you will agree is excellent.
SCHOOL NEWS Although Christmas was a little different this year and could not celebrate in the normal way, we were able to put our festive spirit into helping charities CHRISTMAS CHARITIES During the run up to Christmas, Trinity students and staff were involved in supporting a number of charities. • The Sixth Form have donated essential items to St Basils youth homeless charity. • The whole school have collected donations of non- perishable food items for the Batchley Support Group foodbank. • Christmas Jumper day was on Friday 11th December. Students wore a Christmas jumper in exchange for donations to the food bank.
SCHOOL NEWS VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS CAROL CONCERT It was an absolute pleasure that the school was able to hold its first ever, Virtual Christmas Concert. It had been a difficult term and not being able to run any extra- curricular activities or a concert was disappointing. Thanks to our Year 13 music group, they all worked very hard to put together a little Christmas treat. The Virtual Christmas Concert 2020 was released on YouTube, in December, and student and parents were able to donate to the students chosen charity. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/trinity-high- virtual-concert LIGHT THE DARKNESS On Wednesday 27th January at 8pm, Trinity High School staff and students came together to remember those who died during the Holocaust, and genocide since. While we were not be able to be together, our online community, The Hub was filled with beautiful images of candles burning brightly to #LightTheDarkness. DONATION OF LAPTOPS During the spring term, a Redditch electronics company donated 20 laptops and 10 wireless dongles to help students at Trinity High School who were learning from home. Provided by Solid State PLC, the donated devices made a huge difference towards enabling local students to engage and interact within lessons to ensure their education continued. We also have had other donations from the school community, parents, governors and staff, and we were extremely grateful to everyone who donated during this difficult time.
LEARNING DURING LOCKDOWN NANDO’S COMPETITON In February, Mrs Kirk, launched a challenge to students to come up with items for the Nando’s menu, which was very kindly sponsored by Nando’s Redditch. We had some fantastic entries with really creative ideas. It was a really tough decision to choose the top entries, let alone the winner, and Mrs Kirk had to get help from all the staff to choose the winner. The winner who received a Nando’s Platter was Anya O, well done we may well see your dishes on the menu by the end of the year. PIZZA COMPETITION Following on from the Nando’s challenge, Mrs Kirk set another culinary challenge, a Pizza competition, again we had fantastic entries and really creative ideas. After lots of debate and judging, we had a winner, Lucy H who received a Pizza Hut bundle. VALENTINE’S COMPETITION The final ‘at home’ challenge set by Mrs Kirk was to create a Valentine treat. This was the hardest to judge yet and after lots of debate and judging, the winner was Lizzie W.
SCHOOL NEWS FACE MASK DONATION We were extremely grateful to have received a wonderful donation of facemasks, visors and hand sanitiser from a member of our community. Money was raised via TikTok followers of Tracey Thomas, who had a child at Trinity a few years ago. Tracey had been raising funds through her account and using the money to purchase products which would help to keep students and staff safe during COVID times. Mr Ward, Headteacher, commented, ‘We are very grateful for this support and wish Tracey well in her future fund raising endeavours’. WE DID SUPPORT SAFER INTERNET DAY Safer Internet Day 2021 was on 9th February and was celebrated with the theme ‘An internet we trust – exploring reliability in the online world’. Safer Internet Day inspires a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively. Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the celebration sees thousands of organisations get involved to promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. This year in the UK, Safer Internet Day explores reliability online. Safer Internet Day was celebrated globally with the slogan: Together for a better internet. Making sure our students understand how to stay safe online is crucial – particularly at the moment when the lack of social contact means they're spending a lot more time surfing the net. But as well as ensuring children keep personal information to themselves and don't access unsuitable websites, it's also vitally important they can spot ‘fake news' and misleading or untrustworthy information online, and that's why the theme for this year's Safer Internet Day in February was ‘An internet we trust: exploring reliability in the online world'. “As lockdowns continue to disrupt education and everyday life, it's more important than ever that young people are given the tools and understanding they need for safe internet use,” Please use this link for more information: PARENT RESOURCE
SCHOOL NEWS WELLBEING DAY Students took a break from lessons before Easter to participate in our Wellbeing Day, with the focus of looking after and improving their wellbeing. Students had conversations with their tutors via teams and were able to choose activities from a wellbeing grid that could be completed at home. These included tasks regarding mental, physical, social, creative and community wellbeing, from having a bath with candles to having a friendly chat with a neighbour, making a COVID time capsule or to having a go at yoga. Students who were in school were also able to take part in various activities including Sport, Photography, Gardening and Cooking, some of the food creations are seen above. BEAR GRYLLS ADVENTURE—NEC Year 12 Sport students went to Bear Grylls Adventure Indoor/Outdoor Activity Centre at the NEC on Friday 9th July. All of the students that attended had a fantastic attitude towards each activity, behaved extremely mature throughout the day and all passed the outdoor and adventure section of their course. Activities included: indoor rock climbing, outdoor high ropes course and an obstacle course.
SCHOOL NEWS YEAR 11 CAREERS EVENT All of Year 11 were involved in a Careers Event ‘Looking towards your Future’, on Tuesday 25th May. The day started with Luke Carnie From Aim Higher and Uni Connect with a positive outlook on the future for our young people. The students then had a carousel of activities with ‘Help in getting a part-time job and money matters.’ delivered by our new Enterprise Advisor, Diana Sharpe. Then there was a presentation by the British Army about opportunities and prospects within the forces. The last session was ‘Different Interview Tips’ presented by Luke Carnie. We finished with a talk from Nick Elston , an Inspirational speaker about resilience and mental well-being. GOOD LUCK We said au revoir to our Year 11 and Year 13 students on 28th May. Year 13 were able to say goodbye to friends and staff at their Leavers’ Breakfast and Year 11 were able to sign each others shirts before they left. It had been another difficult year for those leaving school, with GCSE and A Level exams being ‘cancelled’ and replaced with end of year assessments for teachers to determine an estimated grade. We hope that you will all achieve the grades that you all so much deserve in August. We will be welcoming back some of the Year 11 students in the Sixth Form in September, but we wish you all good luck for your futures – you have been great, you have overcome the adversity of the last two years, and you all now have the chance to succeed in your chosen paths. RESULTS DAYS A reminder that exam results will be emailed to student’s school email address on:- • Year 13 Tuesday 10th August • Year 11 Thursday 12th August
SCHOOL NEWS We had a further two cookery challenges at Easter and half term, which has certainly showcased our students’ culinary skills. COLIN THE CATERPILLAR RIP OFF COMPETITION During the last week of the half-term, Sixth Formers competed against each other to make their best version of Colin the Caterpillar cake. The students had the target to produce a better caterpillar than all the other ones found in supermarkets. The vote was then put to all the staff and students at Trinity. Well done all who took part. We were very impressed by the result with the winner being the Wiggly Caterpillar by Cate B and Lucy O EASTER BAKE OFF COMPETITON Thank you to those of you who took the time to enter the Easter competition. There were some amazing entries and it was hard to choose the top few entries, however, the judges did come to a difficult decision and the top three are shown here. 1st Place: Lizzie W 2nd Place: Beth RM 3rd Place: Lucy H
SCHOOL NEWS YEAR 12 PROGRESSION DAY On Thursday 24th June , all our Year 12 students were off timetable for a ‘Progression after Year 13’ workshops. This included a general information talk by Mrs Laxton, including apprenticeship availability and the application process, followed by a university application process by Mr Petit. Whatever future progression routes our student will take, Trinity uses a career research tool called ‘Unifrog’ (slightly mis-leading as it is not just about university but all routes including Apprenticeships / CV’s / Work based learning. I would urge all our Sixth Form students to regularly log on and use this fantastic research tool. YEAR 12 DRAMA Wednesday 14th July saw the Year 12 Drama students perform their play ‘mad House’ in front of staff and peers. The ‘scary’ performance depicts the minds of serial killers and their nemesis. Great performances by our Drama students. Thank you to all who also put money in the collection for the charity ‘Mind’ (looking after Mental Health of our young people). Well done to all involved.
SCHOOL NEWS STEM COMPETITION On Monday 17th May, Trinity celebrated student creativity with its annual School STEM Competition (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Each year, students in Year 9 are asked to design a solar powered product, which is both innovative and problem-solving, and create an accompanying presentation, which communicates their ideas effectively. Our current cohort really took on the challenge and the range of ideas really impressed the staff in the Creative & Technology Faculty, making their task of shortlisting the top 10 concepts much more difficult than usual. The decision was very tricky, in fact, 12 students were selected to pitch their ideas to our three judges in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ presentation format! All 12 competitors really excelled in presenting their products, with each student displaying the school’s key values of Pride, Ambition and Excellence, and whilst the competition was fierce the atmosphere in the green room was wonderfully supportive and encouraging. This year’s judging panel commented on how strong the field was, complimenting each entrant for the level of ingenuity and confidence displayed in their demonstrations. Unfortunately, as with all competitions, some tough choices had to be made in order to decide on the top three entries, but, it was great to see how pleased the students were for the winners, despite not being chosen themselves. The three winners were: Iraj I - solar lamp; Anya O - CCTV plant pot; Lucy H - solar toothbrush who went on to the final representing Trinity against Pershore High School, where they sold their pitch to a new set of judges with the hope of bringing home the £250 prize, kindly sponsored by Alcoa.
SCHOOL NEWS Following on from previous article…. The final took place on Tuesday 6th July, and our three Year 9 students from Trinity locked horns with three of their contemporaries from Pershore High School. Competing for the honour of STEM champion with each pupil hopeful of winning the £250 star prize. The field was incredibly diverse, with everything from planes to toothbrushes, the level of ingenuity was inspiring and the confidence displayed in each pitch was astonishing – especially if one considered the added pressures of presenting to this year’s expert panel overseeing the adjudication: Mr Jim Barton; former engineer and teacher; Dr David Gregory-Kumar; BBC Science Correspondent and Mr Ward,; Trinity’s Headteacher. This year’s format had to be changed slightly to accommodate Covid-safe protocols, with Trinity students presenting ‘live’ in front of the judges and Pershore students being beamed in virtually; once the feed was established, the whole day went incredibly well and there were no lasting technical issues to detract from the excellent event – perhaps it could even be a permanent change, as students are asked to consider sustainability, so too should we organisers! Once all pitches were delivered, the judges had the unenviable task of deciding upon the winners, the calibre of this year’s presentations were the highest yet and caused the panel to request an extra five minutes for deliberation; eventually, a decision was made and Iraj’s (Trinity) solar lamp declared the winner, with Logan’s (Pershore) jacket and Lucy’s (Trinity) toothbrush coming in second and third, respectively. Trinity’s Creative & Technology department would like to thank all students, staff and judges involved, it was a terrific occasion and we were so proud of all those that entered, they really were a credit to both themselves and the schools they represented. Congratulations to Lucy, Logan, Iraj, Harriet, Anya and Anya your futures are very bright!
SCHOOL NEWS SIXTH FORM CHARITY FUND RAISING On Wednesday afternoons the Sixth Form have a ‘Sport/PE‘ slot for all students. A football competition was arranged amongst the student’s. Well done to Uwais who organised this therefore managing to raise a contribution towards : ‘The Well Foundation’. Thank you to all who donated generously. This has enabled the school to sponsor a water pump in Cambodia to help a poor area without access to clean water. Polluted water is the world’s biggest killer of children under five. The Well foundation’s primary aim is to raise money to build wells, install hand pumps and establish health and sanitation programmes to provide accessible clean water to the poverty-stricken regions of the world. A fantastic project and we are now looking to raise further funds to sponsor more pumps / wells around the world where the population does not have access to clean water. SIXTH FORM BAKE CHARITY SALE Very well done to Lizzie and Megan and all who contributed to the Bake Sale - Sour Sixth Form succeeded in raising £65.00 going towards the ‘Great Ormond Street’ charity – fantastic effort! MODERN & FOREIGN LANGUAGES Towards the end of term, Year 9 have been getting creative in their language classes. To celebrate the culture of the countries as well as learn the language, pupils discovered how many of the countries celebrate the pre-Lent season with festivals, carnivals including dressing-up and wear masks . Although this party season was a few months whilst we were in lockdown, the languages department decided the pupils shouldn't miss out on this enriching experience. Well done, Year 9.
SCHOOL NEWS THS SUMMER PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION This summer the Photography department launched a brand-new competition for the whole school to get involved in. There were over 80 photographic submissions on the theme of ‘The natural world’, and they were truly stunning. Entries were displayed on the Everything Arts Team that is part of The Hub; our online school community. The images submitted were a fantastic demonstration of creativity and individuality, testament to the students enterprising skill and imagination. Our specialist panel of judges deliberated over the images they felt captured the natural world in the most interesting ways. It was a tough call, but they finally agreed on joint winners, Chloe B and Farah S, both from Year 10. Runners up were Logan S, (Y9), Catalina B and Aaron H, (Y12). Everyone who entered deserves a special mention as the judges and photography department were absolutely blown away by the talent displayed, but in particular Kirsty R and Chase J (Y10), Libby M (Y11), and Hayden F (Y12) all made a big impression on the judges too. Winners now have a new portable photo-tent to take home and continue their creative journey with, and we hope to see much more of your wonderful work on The Hub. There will be a new competition in the new Autumn term, so look out for announcements and start thinking about how you could capture the warm tones of the season. The theme will be ‘Hideaway’, so get out your cameras and start snapping to be first in line to enter.

SPORTS NEWS THS MILES Our lockdown inspired initiative came from the Sports Department, namely, Mr Bristowe. Given that our options were limited at that time, he decided to add up our daily walks, exercise routines, (cycling, rowing, running) - into mileage and we all managed to go from Land’s End via a diversion to Trinity High School and got to We wonder where our next travels will take us? COMMUNAL NOTICES
COMMUNAL NOTICES
COMMUNAL NOTICES WITH THE HOT WEATHER AND SUMMER HOLIDAYS APPROACHING PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS RLSS WARNING: The RLSS has appealed for people to take note of simple safety messages to avoid a repeat of last summer’s tragedies when many people lost their lives cooling off in un-lifeguarded open water, not suitable for swimming. Around 400 people needlessly drown in the UK every year and thousands more suffer injury, some life changing, through near-drowning experiences. Putting this into context, one person dies every 20 hours in the UK and drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death of children in the UK. So, with temperatures high, it is important people make the most of the weather and enjoy the water but do so safely at sites designated for swimming.
