Appleton Farm camp SUMMER 2019 AT A P P L E T O N FA R M S , I P S W I C H , M A Registration Opens February 1 APPLETON FARM CAMP 2019 | 1
WELCOME TO Appleton Farm Camp Dear Parent, Do you have a child who just can’t get enough time with animals or who begs to make concoctions in the kitchen? How about the little crafter who is always collecting twigs, moss, and acorns for her next creation? Appleton Farm Camp is the perfect place for your children to meet friendly Jersey cows and their irresistible calves, get creative in our teaching kitchen (fully equipped for kids), and explore our fields and forests in search of salamanders, hawks, and beavers. Our Carriage Barn serves as our base camp but we’ll spend most of our time tending our Learning Garden, cooking in the farm kitchen, exploring the historic Great Pasture, caring for our barnyard animals, and discovering all about how farmers grow and raise the food we eat. Appleton Farm Camp creates safe and educational experiences for children to take part in our working farm. We incorporate much of our STEM curriculum developed for our school program into camp so that every day is infused with learning opportunities alongside the fun. Through games, activities, arts, adventure, harvesting, cooking, and plenty of time for free play in the great outdoors, this unique farm camp will connect your child to the land and natural systems that support all of us. We hope you’ll join us this summer – your child will love meeting our furry farm animals, gobbling up garden goodies in the hot sun, and playing hide and seek in the sunflowers. See you on the farm, Pilar Redmond Camp Director, Appleton Farms

ABOUT THE CAMP A DAY AT FARM CAMP: At 9AM, we ring our morning cow bell and our gaggle of mini farmers will wave goodbye to moms, dads, and caregivers to assess the list of farm chores, activities, and games that will make up our day of farm fun. Once we have our assignments, we are off and running. Our Farmhands may head to the garden to see what they can harvest for their kitchen experiments, while Little Peeps and Sprouts head to the barnyard to help feed the bunnies, goats, and sheep. The Apprentices may be off to check the fence lines and the Foragers may get to work on their composting project. We’ll all enjoy a snack during our morning activity then say goodbye to our Little Peeps at 12PM. Afternoons are filled with cooking, games, hiking, crafting, animals, and more! PHILOSOPHY: We know that a reconnection to our food, our history, and our natural world is proven to drive creativity, reduce stress, and improve our health – physically, socially, and emotionally. (That goes for adults and kids!) Appleton Farm Camp is a thoughtfully designed camp experience that will create fundamental and lasting connections between your family and the land, farms, and the natural systems that support all of us. STAFF: We keep our campers active and engaged with a team of extraordinary counselors. We hire the brightest, most talented, and compassionate educators because we believe that the staff can make or break your child’s camp experience. Our team’s experience, combined with our camp values, allow us to be flexible and highly creative when designing each day of camp so that your child can feel comfortable and ready to dig in! SCHEDULE: Appleton Farm Camp runs for 7 weeks in summer. Our young campers have a choice of half day (9AM-12PM) or full day (9AM-3PM) depending on their age, while our older campers spend a full day at the farm, ending their day at 3PM. Week-long sessions begin July 1. Week 1: July 1 - 5* Week 5: July 29 - August 2 Week 2: July 8 - 12 Week 6: August 5 - 9** Week 3: July 15 - 19 Week 7: August 12 - 16 Week 4: July 22 - 26 * No camp Thursday, July 4. OUR PROGRAMS APPLETON FARM CAMP PROGRAMS Camp is divided into five groups and runs for seven weeks each summer. Each group will get to take part in a wide variety of age-appropriate farm experiences from cooking in the kitchen, to caring for the animals, harvesting the learning garden, crafting, exploring, and learning new skills. LITTLE PEEPS: Ages 5 - 6* | 9AM-12NOON (Half day program) Little Peeps will explore the farm in pursuit of tasty veggies to harvest, chores that need their helping hands, and barnyard animals looking for some company. Our littlest farmers will sing, dance, and explore their way from the garden to the farm kitchen, the milking parlor to the beaver dam, learning as they go. By the end of the week, they’ll be teaching you how to make butter, understand the role of the sun in making milk, and are guaranteed to have a new favorite veggie. *Little Peeps must be 5 years old by October 1, 2019 SPROUTS: Ages 5.5 - 6* | 9AM-3PM Similar to the half day program, Sprouts will spend their time exploring all aspects of the farm, from our friendly barnyard, to the Learning Garden, the kitchen to the pastures! This group is geared toward young campers who are ready for a longer day, spending their afternoons digging, discovering, and frolicking their way across the farm. They’ll care for the garden and harvest the bounty to make delicious, fresh snacks, learn to groom our bunnies, explore the secret forest hideaway, and always have time for lots of games, crafts, and fun with new friends! * Sprouts must be 5 years old by January 1, 2019 APPLETON FARM CAMP 2019 | 3
OUR PROGRAMS FARMHANDS I: Ages 7-8 | 9AM-3PM FARMHANDS II: Ages 9-10 | 9AM-3PM Campers 7-10 years old are ready to make more connections between themselves and the farm that grows much of what they eat. There is no better way to understand these connections than to pull on your farm boots and dig in. Soil scientists for a day, dairy farmers the next, garden to table chefs by the end of the week, these campers observe, work, learn, and play, just like our farmers. * To best accommodate the learning needs of our campers as well as program growth, we have developed age-specific curriculum within the Farmhands group. Please register your child for the appropriate age group. FORAGERS: Ages 11-13 | 9AM-3PM For our older campers who may understand a little more about a working farm, we guide our days around the question: What is a sustainable food system? From there, our week’s activities are built around understanding what makes our farm sustainable and how we can help to make a difference both on the farm and at home. Campers will have a chance to take on sustainability challenges at the farm, learn from some of our local experts, and mix in plenty of farm explorations, games, cooking competitions, farm Olympics, and time with our barnyard animals. 4| APPLETON FARM CAMP 2019
APPRENTICES: Ages 13-15 | 9AM-3PM Limited to 8 campers. Sessions offered: July 15-19 and August 12-16 Just because campers get a little older doesn’t mean they don’t still love being on the farm. Does your child want to be a farmer, or do they just love getting dirty and working in the garden or with animals? This camp is created especially with the hard working, farm-loving camper in mind. Spend a day as part of the farm crew harvesting in the field, help move the pasture fencing, go behind the scenes with our cheesemaker, work on cleaning up our trails, chef up a farm to table meal, and more. This week focuses on giving campers hands on experiences and exposes them to all aspects of farm life. Appleton Late Night Foragers and Apprentices can join us for a special evening on the farm. This after-hours optional add-on gives campers an exclusive opportunity to experience the farm outside of the normal camp day. We’ll plan and cook a dinner together with our garden harvest, welcome in the cows, learn how our farmers do their milking chores and spend some extra time with our friends, telling stories, and playing games. Appleton Late Nights will take place on Thursday of each week. Campers will be picked up at 7PM on Thursday night. For pricing information, please see 2019 Weekly Tuition. APPLETON FARM CAMP 2019 | 5
