Friday 18th June 2021 Dear Parents, Wow! I think your children are going to be shattered this weekend after the excitement of the week they’ve had here! Our Sports Days were wonderful events to behold and the sun beamed down on the children as they competed. It was superb to see the effort and determination in all the children’s faces, as well as the fabulous examples of sportsmanship displayed by every child towards those who won or those who fell at the final hurdle. Many school records were broken, and not by just a few seconds or centimetres but by some really whopping distances. I was delighted that at all the events there was just the right balance of fun, sport for all and furious competition! It was also absolutely fantastic to be able to invite you in to enjoy your children’s endeavours in sport this week. To see you all on the field encouraging the children who were competing was a lovely reminder of school community life as it was before the pandemic. We hope it isn’t long to go, now, before life really does return to normal, but thank you, all, for your patient acceptance of the ‘Covid pens’ and for your superb support of all the children this week. Swimming Galas have begun in earnest and I’m sorry we’re not able to invite you in to spectate. However, we will bring you photos and news as soon as they have all ploughed through the water! Today has been an exciting one for all the children, but particularly for our Years 7 and 8 pupils who gave the final presentations for their ‘Lion’s Lair’ projects. The pupils have been engaged in an ‘Apprentice’ style project where they have had to create, design or source a product for sale to the rest of the pupil body at school. The children were given a budget and were asked to choose a charity to which they would donate the proceeds of their sales. They had to brand the product, advertise, take it to market and financially forecast their likely profit. This morning, they presented their project, from conception to launch, to three ‘Lions’ of business, Mrs Julie Burden, Ms Lesley Buchanan and me. They then set up shop during a rainy break and sold their products to the buying public! There was huge excitement about the whole process as well as the high sugar content in some of the merchandise (!) and the pupils acquitted themselves superbly in both their presentations, their sales pitches and in their market trader skills as well! I am delighted to announce that the winner of the competition was FAB F.A.M.B.O!! After the event, they evaluated the success of their project and reflected upon what they would do differently next time. It was huge fun, but also an enormously valuable learning process for them. Not only did they have to come up with the physical merchandise, some of which was created from scratch such as scented playdough and hand-woven bracelets, but they had to collaborate successfully, budget with a view to making profit, allocate tasks, work creatively and then speak publicly and answer questions from the floor of the presentation by thinking on their feet! It was a triumph and I know each pupil felt they gained something significant from the task. I should like to thank Mrs Burden and Ms Buchanan for their time and efforts today; it was much appreciated. Next academic year, we will include the Year 6 cohort as well as our Year 8 pupils in this project so it will be ‘Lion’s Lair’ on a grand scale! Next week, we look forward to the first of our dramatic productions in Swan. We can’t wait! The children have been busily rehearsing and it sounds fabulous! We hope you and your children have a restful, and hopefully rain-free, weekend ahead. All the very best, Ms Sally Weber, Head Yarrells School & Nursery Page 1 of 10 Friday 18th June 2021

Lion’s Lair Mrs R Skelsey-Evans, Mr T Lewis & Mrs C Cunningham This year has been spectacularly busy with the Lion’s Lair teams working hard towards their enterprises. The project was launched on the morning of Friday 18th July 2021. The atmosphere was electric and tense as the teams prepared to present to the school and the Lions. For the first time in Yarrells history the Lions consisted of three strong and independent Lionesses, Mrs Burden, Mrs Paddy and Ms Weber. In the morning the students presented their enterprise to the panel, followed by the selling of their products to every year group. The judges drifted the stalls and marked each team on a set of entrepreneurial skills. The crowds gathered around each stall with sheer delight at spending their money on the delights in front of them. The products ranged from; scented playdoh, popcorn, handmade bracelets, Chococo ice-cream, confectionary and drinks. The morning itself began with rain, but it did not deter the teams; they set up their stalls with gusto. Music blasted from light up ice buckets, while each year group took it in turns to shop. The atmosphere was electric! Ice-cream and popcorn adorned the arms of many students. It was a fantastic day! Year 7 and 8 made a grand total of £257.18 for the #Willdoes charity. Most of all, everyone had fun and feasted. The teams want to thank the following companies for their generous donations: Truly Scrumptious in Poole, Lidl in Hamworthy, Leonards in Swanage and a very special thank you to Chococo for very generously supplying delicious ice cream and waffle cones. Early Years & Pre-Prep Pirates ahoy! This week, we have focussed our learning on the sea shore and what's on top of the ocean. The children in Squirrels were really upset to find out that the sea is being polluted with plastic. One of our friends brought in a story about this subject and it gave us many suggestions on how to look after the sea and the animals. One of them was to write a letter to an important person to encourage them to try a make a big difference. With this in mind, on Wednesday we decided to Yarrells School & Nursery Page 3 of 10 Friday 18th June 2021
write a letter to the Prime Minister and our local MP Michael Tomlinson, asking them to help clean up the beaches with us. Wild Woods Wednesday was very busy. With a focus on boats, we made our own rafts out of natural resources after designing them. In groups, we thought about the details we might add and the materials we would use before constructing our designs. Thursday brought us two exciting events, Sports Day for Reception and Squirrels and a Teddy Bears Picnic for the Nutkins children. In our P.E sessions we have been practising the activities and, on the day, we enjoyed taking part and trying as hard as we could! We cheered each other on beautifully as we know how important it is to encourage each other and try our best. Nutkins were thrilled to take our families on a bear hunt before enjoying a picnic together. It was lovely for everyone to have a chat and catch up, for both parents and practitioners, especially after this latest period of restrictions. The Early Years Foundation stage explains the importance of these partnerships and the benefits it has on the children. These events have given us the opportunity to build upon these relationships and strengthen existing ones. Year 1 - Tyrone the Toilet Miss A Denison We are delighted to announce that we have raised £100 towards the Toilet Twinning Charity. Your generous donations will now allow the charity to build a safe and hygienic toilet block for children in Zambia. Keep an eye out for a picture of the toilet that we have twinned with in the office! Thank you for your generosity. https://www.toilettwinning.org/ Yarrells School & Nursery Page 4 of 10 Friday 18th June 2021
Year 6 Study Skills Mrs C Cunningham YEAR 6 CAKE SALE FOR CCAA After listening to Euan's presentation on Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, the children were so moved that they decided to try and raise some money to support the charity. Many children baked cakes and we are so thankful for all of their efforts. Thank you to every single person who bought a cake and donated so generously. We are absolutely delighted to announce that we raised a rather impressive £185.90 Thank you so much. This week, we only had time for one round of presentations due to so many other exciting events going on around the school. Today, George brought in Maggie, his beautiful working cocker spaniel. She was very excited to join us and made a friend in Winnie! George clearly has met his match in a pet with the same amount of energy as he has! Ollie gave an extremely informative and interesting talk on alopecia. He spoke about all the different types of alopecia and the causes of it. In the constructive feedback, the overwhelming comments were about how brave Ollie was to talk about his own experience. Finally, please see the photo of Miriam, who gave a fabulous talk about horses a few weeks ago. Yarrells Sport News Yarrells Tennis Tournament 2021 Mr Bujak reports… I am pleased to inform you that we have managed to finish the first phase of our 2021 Yarrells Tennis Tournament. All children had a fantastic experience with some phenomenal rallies demonstrating both great technical skills and superb movement on court. We have witnessed some bitter upsets and tears on court too, showing levels of commitment and how much it means to our children to perform well and win. Without a shadow of a doubt, it was a fantastic learning curve for players, teachers and myself. After the very intense and emotional time on court, playing 245 recorded matches, I am pleased to announce the finalists of the Yarrells 2021 Tennis Tournament. Well done to all participants!
