Bennett Philosophy and Mission
We believe that a solid education will equip a student to be the best person he or she can be, both
now and in the future.
                                      Mission Statement
The mission of Bennett Academy is to enable its middle school promotees to enter and
successfully function in high school courses that prepare them for a university or college
curriculum. The promotees of Bennett Academy shall demonstrate excellence in the art and/or
skill of communication, including reading, writing and speaking, proficiency in mathematics,
knowledge of social studies and science at a middle school level, and basic technological
literacy.

                                  Our Guiding Principles
We encourage independent study and community involvement, empower students to make
choices that will lead to positive outcomes and teach behaviors that will increase the students‟
chances for lifetime success.

                                 Our Commitment to You
You are important to us. That is why we have built a small school for good students. We
believe you need more attention in class, and a safe environment in which to go to school. We
can keep your school environment safe and comfortable only with your help. We will provide
whatever we can to assure your safety and happiness during these years. In addition, we will
work very diligently to provide you with an education that will take you anywhere you want to
go.

                           Testing, Assessment and Retention
At Bennett Academy we have very high standards. It is our policy to consider retention for any
student that does not pass at least one AzMERIT test in grades 3-8. This policy helps to ensure
that students are prepared to meet the demands of high school and beyond.

Students in the 8th grade are also required to complete an Eighth Grade Book assignment. This
assignment is a graduation requirement at Bennett Academy. Any student who does not
complete the assignment will not be allowed to walk at the eighth grade graduation ceremony.

Attendance
                                          Tardy Students

Punctuality is taken seriously at Bennett Academy. School begins at 8:45 AM and students are
expected to be in their seats and ready to learn at that time. All late students must sign in at the
office and receive a pass to class. Tardiness carries with it the consequence of demerits and
detention.

                                              Absences

   1. Parents must call the office to report an absence before 10:30 AM or the absence will be
      considered unexcused.
   2. After 5 absences, a letter will be sent home alerting the parents of the potential legal
      ramifications of absenteeism, and the Maricopa County Juvenile Court may be notified.
   3. After 10 consecutive unexcused absences, the student may be un-enrolled. Extended
      illness will be handled by the administration on an individual basis.
   4. Excessive absences will be reported as such to the Arizona Department of Education.
   5. When your child is absent 5% of the school days possible, we consider him or her a risk
      for retention. At 19 absences, for any reason other than hospitalization, the student may
      be required to repeat the current grade.

An Excused Absence is one caused by a true emergency or serious illness and is called in by the
parent before school, on the day of the absence. Parents may need to provide proof if
absenteeism becomes problematic. An excused absence under Arizona State law may be due to
illness, doctor appointment, bereavement, family emergencies, and out-of-school suspensions.

An Unexcused Absence is one that is not called in by the parent, or one caused by an
illegitimate or frivolous reason; i.e., “Johnny didn‟t want to go to school today”, or “Johnny
missed the bus, so he decided to stay home”, or “Johnny is going on vacation”, or “I need to go
out of town for a week, and my child is going with me.”

Only a parent or guardian may call in an absence. Calls from students or siblings for absences
will not be accepted. Absences are either excused or unexcused, and are determined by
state law.

                                       Attendance Policy
School attendance is not only a good habit, state law requires it. Arizona State Law (15-802.E,
15-803.) requires every person who has custody of a child between the ages of six and sixteen
years shall make sure the child attends school for the full time school is in session unless unable
to attend due to illness or another legitimate reason.

To encourage and improve school attendance, Bennett Academy has implemented a truancy
program in partnership with Maricopa County Juvenile Court. This truancy program is called
C.U.T.S. (Court Unified Truancy Suppression). We will be tracking attendance very closely.
Your child is expected to be at school every day, unless there is an excused reason not to be. An

absence is defined as a minimum of one missed class period per day. An unexcused absence will
count as a truant day as defined by law. A student is “habitually truant” if he/she has five or
more unexcused absences from school. A student that is absent more than ten percent (18
days) of the required number of school days per year is considered to have “excessive absences”
whether the absence is excused or unexcused.

When a student has five or more unexcused absences or 19 excessive absences (excused OR
unexcused), the student can be cited to the CUTS Program through the Juvenile Court. The
hearing will be held at the Juvenile Court Center. A parent or legal guardian must be present
with the student at the time of the hearing. Consequences at the hearing may include the
following: required attendance of the parent and the child at an education class (to be held on
Saturdays), work hours assigned to the child, counseling, etc. The parent will be assessed a $50
Diversion fee. Failure to complete these consequences may result in suspension of your child‟s
driver‟s license, or inability to get a driver‟s license until their 18th birthday and/or formal court
proceedings. It is the parent‟s/guardian‟s responsibility to ensure their child‟s attendance in an
approved academic setting. If you fail to take the necessary steps to provide your child with
appropriate education you may receive a citation. If convicted, it is a Class 3 misdemeanor
punishable by jail time and/or fine.

The education of your child is extremely important to us. This program is another way that
Bennett Academy is working with the community to ensure a quality education for all students.
Please note that the school also reserves the right to have a CUTS Officer speak at Orientations
and Assemblies, as well as to individual groups of students regarding the importance of school.

                                          Visitor Policy
Visitor on Campus: Any visitor on campus MUST do the following upon entrance to Bennett
Academy during school hour.
   A. Enter through the front security gate only.
   B. Sign in as a visitor in the office.
   C. Receive a visitor sticker / badge that must be worn at all times while on campus.
   D. Sign out when leaving campus and return visitor sticker / badge to office staff.
   E. Exit the campus through the front security gate only.
   F. Any item (lunch, supplies, medication, homework etc.) that is being delivered by a visitor
       for a student or faculty member MUST be left in the office. The item will be delivered to
       the appropriate location on campus by a member of Bennett Academy staff.

                                            Dress Code
Bennett Academy has high standards for our students, staff, and the administration. Dressing
neatly in a clean uniform will help us all maintain our personal dignity and will eliminate
distractions. Uniforms are to be worn daily. New students out of uniform after the grace (2-day)
period will experience a “fitting” consequence. Our uniform policy is NOT optional; Bennett
students out of uniform will be provided with a proper uniform shirt or pants, if available, or
parents will be called to bring a proper uniform.

Uniforms
   1. Khaki or black bottoms and shirts with the Bennett Academy logo are required.
           A. Khaki tan or black skirts, shorts and long pants. No short skirts or shorts.
           B. Polo shirts must be purple or black with no collar or cuff decoration. Shirts are not
               to have a brand logo sewn or printed on, other than the Bennett Academy logo.
               No other logos are acceptable.
           C. Bennett Academy t-shirts are acceptable on Fridays.
           D. Uniform shirts are not to be tied or modified.
   2. Long pants must be at least one (1) inch from the floor.
   3. Baggies and Cargo pants are not allowed.
   4. It is recommended that shirts be tucked in at the waist and belts be worn.
   5. Uniform skirts and shorts need to be no shorter than 2-3 inches above the knee.
   6. Closed-toes shoes must be worn with socks. Athletic shoes work best for comfort and
      activity time. Sandals, flip-flops, or other open toed shoes are not allowed.
   7. Hats are not to be worn during the school day; unless outdoors.

                              Improper Attire / Adornment

The following items are disallowed on students at all times (even when attending school
sponsored events, on or off our campus or free dress days)

   1. Pants that hang down more than a two inches from the crotch, or „sag‟.
   2. Chains, gloves, or half-gloves.
   3. Shirts that do not tuck in to pant or skirt, or that do not cover up the entire stomach, back
       or side. No flesh is to show between the shirt line and the beltline.
   4. Steel-toed boots.
   5. Torn or stained clothing. Students MUST come to school in a clean uniform each
       day.
   6. Excessively tight clothes (clothing that is seductive or distracting) or excessively large.
   7. Sunglasses worn inside.
   8. Platform shoes (higher than 1 inch) or knee-high boots.
   9. Clothing or jewelry with antisocial implications (including but not limited to gang
       symbols, sex, drugs, alcohol, skulls, weapons, or violence).
   10. Tattoos or piercings visible anywhere except one standard pierce per ear. No gauges or
       other “extreme” ear gear.
   11. T-shirts are not to be visible hanging out from under uniform shirts.
   12. Skulls as decoration are inconsistent with our mission and vision and are not allowed on
       clothing, shoes, jewelry, etc. Please do not bring items thus adorned to school.
   13. Mohawks and other distracting hair styles and colorings are not consistent with our
       uniform policy and may not be allowed. Students found in violation of this policy, may
       be required to correct the violation before returning to school. This includes unnatural
       colors and multi-colored hair, long hair in the face, or unkept hair. Long hair must be

confined or pulled back with a head band, rubber band or other item to keep the hair out
       of the student‟s face.
                                      Outerwear Policy
   1. Black zip-up hoodie-style jackets are the required outerwear. You may purchase a black
      jacket w/ logo from Collette‟s, or purchase a plain zip-up black jacket elsewhere.
   2. Jackets or sweatshirts may not be worn outside after the weather reaches 80 degrees.

                                     After School Policy
Students are allowed to stay at Bennett Academy after school only if they are involved in an
approved after school activity, or are working directly with a teacher or staff member.
Otherwise, students need to leave the school property after they are released from their last class.
All students not directly involved in an approved after school activity MUST be off campus no
later than 15 minutes after school is dismissed.

Only students who are on a team are allowed at practices. All students on campus must be
directly supervised.

           Eligibility for Extra-Curricular Activities (Including sports)
We believe in the ‘no pass - no play’ rule. A student must have a “C” or better in all Core
Subjects on the most recent report card or progress report, to be eligible for extra-curricular
activities, including student council and student court. Also, if a student has 10 or more demerits
(see discipline policy); he or she will not be eligible. The eligibility changes only at report card
or progress report, or loss of demerits. Core Subjects are defined as Mathematics, Social Studies,
Science, and Language Arts.

                                 School Dances and Parties
Dances can only occur between the hours of 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Dances must be approved in
advance. They must be chaperoned by at least two adults, one a school employee, and one
parent. (No siblings, uncles, aunts, etc.) No guests EVER!!

Cell Phone / Electronic Device Policy
Cell phones are to be kept in the student‟s backpack or locked in the student‟s locker at all times.
Cell phone usage is only allowed in the school office.
Bennett Academy is not responsible for any lost cell phones, electronic devises or personal
property. Any personal electronic device, including cell phones being used while on campus
will be confiscated and given to administration. Administration will keep the device until
claimed by a parent or guardian.

                                        Behavior Policy
Bennett Academy students are expected to demonstrate appropriate behavior at all times while
on campus or on any school sponsored event.

Students, you and your parents are responsible for these guidelines, limits, and expectations.
Ignorance is not an excuse. Behavior modification of individual students attending Bennett
Academy is not a priority of the staff or administration. If you have a problem or question about
behavior expectations:
   1. First – please talk with the classroom teacher.
   2. Second, if the problem is not resolved make an appointment to speak to an administrator.

                                 General Classroom Rules

   A. Your teachers deserve your respect. Please show them that respect.
   B. Students need to stay on task. This means no talking without permission.
   C. No food or drinks other than water are allowed in the classrooms. There is no exception
      to the clear water policy.
   D. No chewing gum on campus, period! This includes after school.
   E. Ask permission from the teacher if you need to leave the classroom; this includes going
      to the restroom or drinking fountain. Teachers will distribute hall passes for your use, or
      use a system that is fair and not disruptive.
   F. Do not use profanity or improper slang on campus.
   G. Keep the classrooms and desks clean. This means clean up your own messes. No writing
      on desks. No littering.

H. No belching or other inappropriate noises in the classroom.

                                      Break/Lunch Rules

   A. Students enjoy a 30-minute lunch break and recess. Teachers may also choose to give a
      break in the morning or afternoon.
   B. Food and drinks must be consumed in the lunchroom only. No gum is allowed on
      campus at any time.
   C. Staff members will be on duty during lunch breaks. You are expected to demonstrate
      appropriate behavior while in the lunchroom and during recess.
   D. You are not permitted to leave campus during lunch or any break unless you are signed
      out by a parent or guardian.
   E. No excessive physical contact is allowed during breaks or recess. (eg: tackling, pushing
      etc.)
   F. No access to the lunchroom during breaks.
   G. ALL students are expected to clean up after themselves in the lunchroom or demerits will
      be issued.

                                              Wheels
Sorry, but there is to be no riding of bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, scooters, etc. while on
campus You may ride your bike only to get to and from the school. A bike rack has been
provided.

                                        Discipline Policy
The overall goal of this policy is for the students to learn self-discipline. The overriding
Philosophy is that students respond best to positive reinforcement, including a good feeling about
personal achievement and self-control. The discipline of students shall be maintained as an
ongoing classroom and school management system.

Teachers are to use an approved plan to maintain excellent classroom behavior.

If a student‟s behavior cannot be managed by a teacher or other person in authority, that student
will receive demerits, face suspension, or possible expulsion from Bennett Academy. Each
teacher will have a behavior plan including expectations, consequences, and positive incentives.
Teachers will share this information with parents & students.

Demerit / Merit Policy
Bennett Academy uses a Demerit / Merit system which allows students, parents and
administration to keep numerical track of student behavior.
    Each student will start out the year with zero demerits.
    Demerits will be given for inappropriate behavior. Demerits should be taken very
       seriously. The actual number of demerits earned is based on demerit list on pages 9-10.
       At 15 active demerits, the student will receive a one day suspension. Suspensions may be
       in-school or at home. A second suspension will result in a three day suspension. If a
       student has been suspended twice within the same school year, the student will be
       referred for expulsion upon qualifying for a third suspension.
    Demerits become inactive after 30 days. Serious infractions including suspensions and
       Zero Tolerance incidents will be kept as part of a student‟s permanent record. (see pg.10)
    See the List of Demerits for the number of demerits students may receive for any given
       infraction.
    Merits will be given based on outstanding achievements and exceptional citizenship, not
       for expected appropriate behavior.
    Merits are kept by the student and are not transferable.
    Merits may be used to buy a free dress day, special activities and a variety of other
       rewards.

                            Suspension and Expulsion Policy
The needs of some students may not be met at Bennett Academy. The preferred course of action
when this becomes apparent is for the parents of the student to un-enroll the child, and enroll
him/her into a more appropriate school setting
Suspensions and expulsions are based on demerits earned. Demerits are given in cases of
unacceptable behavior. Any student who has been suspended twice in the same school year will
be referred for expulsion upon qualifying for a third suspension. Your teacher will have
consequences for your behavior in class. Not every infraction results in demerits, but may earn
other consequences. A suspension or expulsion may occur prior to 15 demerits for physical
abuse or Zero Tolerance incidents.

   2. Cheating: 2-10 demerits and a letter written to parents by student
   3. Chewing gum on school property: 1-5
   4. Coming to school habitually unprepared, no paper, pencils, books, etc.: 1-3

   6. Fighting: 5-30
   7. Idle discussion, gossip, behavior or pantomime re: drugs, alcohol, or tobacco: 1-5
   8. Instigating a fight: 3-15
   9. Littering: 2-5
   10. Lying: 1-10

                                        Zero Tolerance
             *For the possession or use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, or tobacco*

Possession of a weapon, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, paraphernalia, may result in automatic
expulsion. You will receive demerits for possession or wearing of clothing depicting drugs, use
of paraphernalia, alcohol, tobacco, or sex. You may be isolated from your peers and given
demerits if you: discuss idly, draw pictures about, gossip about, write about, or pantomime drug
use. Parents or the police may be called if a student smells like tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs.
Bennett Academy reserves the right to search all student backpacks, pockets, purses, desks, and
lockers.
                      * Tobacco possession by minors is against the law!

             STUDENT VIOLENCE / RELATIONAL AGGRESSION
               HARRASSMENT / INTIMIDATION / BULLYING
Bennett Academy (referred to as the “School”) believes it is the right of every student to be
educated in a positive, safe, caring, and respectful learning environment. The School further
believes a learning environment that is inclusive of these traits maximizes student achievement,
fosters student personal growth, and helps a student build a sense of community that promotes
positive participation as citizens in society.
To assist in achieving a learning environment based on the beliefs of the School, bullying in any
form will not be tolerated.

Bullying is defined as repeated acts over time that involves a real or perceived imbalance of
power with the more powerful child or group attacking those who are less powerful. Bullying
can be physical in form, verbal, or psychological.

Bullying may occur when a student or group of students engages in any form of behavior that
includes such acts as intimidation and/or harassment that:
     Has the effect of physically harming a student, damaging a student's property, or placing
       a student in reasonable fear of harm or damage to property.
     Is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive that the action, behavior, or threat creates an
       intimidating, threatening, or abusive environment in the form of physical or emotional
       harm.
     Occurs when there is a real or perceived imbalance of power or strength.
     May constitute a violation of law.

Bullying of a student or group of students can be manifested through written, verbal, physical, or
emotional means and may occur in a variety of forms including, but not limited to:
    Verbal, written/printed or graphic exposure to derogatory comments, extortion,
       exploitation, name calling, or rumor spreading either directly through another person or
       group or through cyber bullying.
    Exposure to social exclusion or ostracism.
    Physical contact including but not limited to pushing, hitting, kicking, shoving, or
       spitting.
    Damage to or theft of personal property.

Cyber bullying: Cyber bullying is, but not limited to, any act of bullying committed by use of
electronic technology or electronic communication devices, including telephonic devices, social
networking and other internet communications, on school computers, networks, forums and
mailing list, or other School-owned property, and by means of an individual‟s personal electronic
media and equipment.

Harassment: Harassment is intentional behavior by a student or group of students that is
disturbing or threatening to another student or group of students. Intentional behaviors that
characterize harassment include, but are not limited to, stalking, hazing, and social exclusion,
name calling, unwanted physical contact and unwelcome verbal or written comments,
photographs and graphics. Harassment may be related, but not limited to, race, religious
orientation, sexual preference, cultural background, economic status, size or personal
appearance. Harassing behaviors can be direct or indirect and by use of social media.

Intimidation: Intimidation is intentional behavior by a student or group of students that places
another student or group of students in fear of harm of person or property. Intimidation can be
manifested emotionally or physically, either directly or indirectly, and by use of social media.
Students are prohibited from bullying on school grounds, school property, school buses, at
school bus stops, at school sponsored events and activities, and through the use of electronic
technology or electronic communication equipment on school computers, networks, forums, or
mailing lists.

Relational Aggression: Relational aggression is defined as “behaviors that harm others through
damage (or threat of damage) to relationships or feelings of acceptance, friendship, or group
inclusion.” Relational aggression includes, for example, social exclusion or spreading rumors
with the intent to harm others, or as a form of retaliation. In contrast to physical aggression in
which the agent of harm is actual or threatened physical damage, relational aggression involves
actual or threatened damage to relationships as the vehicle of harm. Relational aggression is
more prevalent in female relationships, but is not limited to only female relationships.
Disciplinary action may result for bullying which occurs outside of the school and the school
day when such acts result in a substantial physical, mental, or emotional negative effect on the
victim, while on school grounds, school property, school buses, at school bus stops, or at school
sponsored events and activities, or when such act(s) interfere with the authority of the school
system to maintain order. All suspected violations of law will be reported to local law
enforcement.
Students who believe they are experiencing being bullied or expect another student is bullied
should report their concern to any staff member of the School. School personnel are to maintain
appropriate confidentiality of the reported information.
Reprisal by any student directed toward a student or employee related to the reporting of a case
or a suspected case of bullying shall not be tolerated, and the individual(s) will be subject to the
disciplines set out in applicable School regulations.
Students found to be bullying others will be disciplined up to and including suspension or
expulsion from school.
Knowingly submitting a false report under this policy shall subject the student to discipline up to
and including suspension or expulsion. Where disciplinary action is necessary pursuant to any
part of this policy, relevant Bennett Academy policies shall be followed.

Law enforcement authorities shall be notified any time Bennett Academy officials have a
reasonable belief that an incidence of bullying is a violation of the law.

                           Self-Harm or Personal Injury to Self:

In times of great distress, people will occasionally engage in harmful, self-injurious behaviors.
Examples of such behavior are
      Eating disorders or other lifestyle habits that cause health risks,
      Self-injury or the deliberate attempt of bringing harm to one’s own body

Bennett Academy recognizes that those who are finding self-harm a reasonable alternative to
facing the difficulties of this world need others to come alongside them and lend direction and
support during crisis. Bennett Academy has created a response plan to address and provide
guidance in situations where a student engages in self-harm. Depending on the nature of the
situation, Bennett Academy may choose to respond in a variety of ways, which may include, but
are not limited to, accountability, parental consultation, counseling, and/or psychological
assessment. In every situation, attempts will be made to allow the student to have the
opportunity to choose a healthy response.

Student Self-Harm Policy
1. Introduction
Recent research indicates that up to one in twelve young people in the USA engage in self-
harming behaviors, and that this figure is higher amongst specific populations, including young
people with special educational needs. School staff can play an important role in preventing self-
harm and also in supporting students, peers and parents of students currently engaging in self-
harm.

2. Definition of Self-Harm
Self-harm is any behavior where the intent is to deliberately cause harm to one‟s own body for
example:
     Cutting, scratching, scraping or picking skin
     Swallowing inedible objects
     Taking an overdose of prescription or non-prescription drugs
     Swallowing hazardous materials or substances
     Burning or scalding
     Hair-pulling
     Banging or hitting the head or other parts of the body
     Scouring or scrubbing the body excessively

3. Risk Factors
The following risk factors, particularly in combination, may make a young person particularly
vulnerable to self-harm:

Individual Factors
     Depression / anxiety
     Poor communication skills
     Low self-esteem
     Poor problem-solving skills
     Hopelessness
     Impulsivity
     Drug or alcohol abuse
     Family Factors
     Unreasonable expectations
     Neglect or physical, sexual or emotional abuse
     Poor parental relationships and arguments
     Depression, self-harm or suicide in the family

Social Factors
    Difficulty in making relationships / loneliness
    Being bullied or rejected by peers

4. Warning Signs
School staff may become aware of warning signs which indicate a student is experiencing
difficulties that may lead to thoughts of self-harm or suicide. These warning signs should always

be taken seriously and staff observing any of these warning signs should seek further advice
from one of the designated teachers for safeguarding children.
Possible warning signs include:
     Changes in eating / sleeping habits (e.g. student may appear overly tired if not sleeping
       well)
     Increased isolation from friends or family, becoming socially withdrawn
     Changes in activity and mood (e.g. more aggressive or introverted than usual)
     Lowering of academic achievement
     Talking or joking about self-harm or suicide
     Abusing drugs or alcohol
     Expressing feelings of failure, uselessness or loss of hope
     Changes in clothing (e.g. becoming a Goth)

Possible signs of self-injury:
    Bruises or cuts on arms/limbs that are always accompanied by excuses that don‟t seem to
       fit especially on the non-dominate arm
    Wear long sleeves, even when the weather is very hot
    Do not wear short sleeves or shorts when these have been worn in the past
    Avoid PE
    Constant use of wrist bands/coverings
    Clusters of unexplained burns, cuts, scars on skin
    Frequent bandages
    Frequent “accidents” that cause injury

5. Staff Roles in working with students who self-harm
Students may choose to confide in a member of school staff if they are concerned about their
own welfare, or that of a peer. School staff may experience a range of feelings in response to
self-harm in a student such as anger, sadness, shock, disbelief, guilt, helplessness, disgust and
rejection. However, in order to offer the best possible help to students it is important to try and
maintain a supportive and open attitude – a student who has chosen to discuss their concerns
with a member of school staff is showing a considerable amount of courage and trust.

The best response to a student who shared their own self-harm is to:
    Listen to the student
    Try not to show them if you are angry, frustrated, or upset
    Respond with a “low-key, dispassionate demeanor”
    Respond with “respectful curiosity”

Students need to be made aware that it may not be possible for staff to offer complete
confidentiality. If you consider a student is at serious risk of harming themselves then
confidentiality cannot be kept. It is important not to make promises of confidentiality that
cannot be kept even if a student puts pressure on you to do so.

Any member of staff who is aware of a student engaging in or suspected to be at risk of engaging
in self-harm should consult one of the designated teachers for safeguarding children.

Following the report, the designated teacher / governor will decide on the appropriate course of
action. This may include:
     Contacting parents / guardians
     Arranging professional assistance (e.g. doctor, nurse, social services)
     Arranging an appointment with a counselor
     Immediately removing the student from lessons, if their remaining in class is likely to
        cause further distress to themselves or their peers

In the case of an acutely distressed student, the immediate safety of the student is
paramount and an adult should remain with the student at all times

If a student has self-harmed in school, a first aider should be called for immediate help

6. Further Considerations
Any meetings with a student, their parents or their peers regarding self- harm should be recorded
in writing including:
     Dates and times
     An action plan
     Concerns raised
     Details of anyone else who has been informed

This information should be stored in the student‟s file.

It is important to encourage students to let you know if one of their friends is in trouble, upset or
showing signs of self-harming. Friends can worry about betraying confidences so they need to
know that self-harm can be very dangerous and that by seeking help and advice for a friend they
are taking responsible action & being a good friend. They should also be aware that their friend
will be treated in a caring and supportive manner.

The peer group of a young person who self-harms may value the opportunity to talk to a member
of staff either individually or in a small group. Any member of staff wishing for further advice
on this should consult the designated teacher for safeguarding children.

When a young person is self-harming, it is important to be vigilant and stay in case close contact
with the student. Occasionally schools discover that a number of students in the same peer group
are harming themselves. Self-injury can spread among members of a social group and become a
social contagion.

Child Find - Special Education Resources
We make available special education services for students with disabilities, and we also provide
information regarding early intervention services for children, birth through 2 years of age.

We are responsible for identifying, locating and evaluating all children with disabilities within
our school and for making appropriate referrals to:
    1. Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP) for children, birth through 2 years of age for
       evaluation and services if needed.
    2. School district of residence for children ages 3 through 5 for evaluation and services if
       needed.

We are also responsible for providing a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) which
includes special education and related services for students with disabilities at public expense,
under public supervision and direction without charge to the parents. For all new students to the
school, the classroom teacher will complete screening activities within 45 days of enrollment.
The teacher will look at the child‟s ability in the areas of: academics, vision, hearing, adaptive,
communication, social/emotional and motor skills. If any concerns are noted, the child may be
referred for additional help.

The following is the policy regarding bus transportation to and from school:
    It is a privilege to ride the bus to school.
    You may ride the school bus if you live on or near the designated bus route.
    Students will only be picked up and dropped off at their designated bus stop unless
       proper authorization has been granted in advance. Waivers are always temporary.
    Students riding school transportation are subject to all school rules from the time they
       arrive at their designated bus stop and while they are on the bus.
    Students must be in their uniform at all times while riding the bus.
    Students are subject to school discipline should any infractions occur.
    Students must follow COVID-19 safety procedures at all times while riding the school
       bus or face disciplinary action. No exceptions.
    A student’s privilege to ride the school bus may be revoked at any time.

   Bus drivers are to report infractions to the administration.

                                    Bus Behavior / Guidelines

Students must observe these guidelines prior to boarding the bus, at the bus stop, and at school.
    Students AND parents / guardians must be at their designated bus stop 10 minutes
       prior to pick up / drop off time. If a guardian is not at the designated bus stop for
       grade K-3 students at the designated drop off time, the students will be returned to
       Bennett Academy and will need to be picked up there.
    Stay off the road while waiting for the bus.
    Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop before moving toward the bus, boarding
       in an orderly manner.
    Do not push or crowd each other while boarding the bus and taking your seats.
    All Bennett Academy school buses are equipped with video cameras

Students must observe the following procedures while riding on the school bus, or any other
transportation related to school.
     Observe all school rules and behavioral guidelines.
     Listen carefully to the bus driver and follow directions.
     Only one student per seat unless riding with a sibling. (COVID-19)
     Keep hands and feet, and personal objects to yourself and out of the aisles.
     Be courteous and respectful of the driver and fellow students
     Do not litter or throw things out of the window or inside the bus
     Do not change or leave seats at any time. (COVID-19)
     Look out for the safety of younger children.
     Do not allow any part of your body extend out the windows.
     Do not use foul language or make any obscene gestures.

Students must observe the following procedures when exiting the bus or any other transportation
related to the school.
     Follow the driver‟s directions.
     Cross the road at least ten feet in front of the bus immediately after getting off the bus,
        unless the driver tells you otherwise.

 In Case of Emergency: Students are to remain on the bus in case of a road emergency unless
                           otherwise directed by the bus driver.

Infraction Procedures:
Should the student not conform to the school‟s guidelines and expectations while being
transported by the school, or while waiting for the school bus, the principal/assistant to the
principal will follow the demerit procedures, and/or restrict the bus privilege.

Note: Harassing, threatening, defiant or violent behaviors will not be tolerated at any time.
Such behaviors may result in immediate loss of transportation privileges. Students found
responsible for damaging transportation vehicles may also result in immediate loss of

Filosofía y Misión de Bennett
Creemos que una educación solida equipara a un estudiante para ser la mejor persona que pueda
ser, tanto ahora como en el futuro.

                                    Estado de la Misión
La misión de Bennett Academy es permitir que los promovidos de la escuela intermedia ingresen
y funcionen con éxito en los cursos de la escuela preparatoria que los preparen para un plan de
estudios universitarios o currículo universitario. Los promovidos de Bennett Academy deberán

Eres importante para nosotros. Es por eso es que hemos construido una pequeña escuela para
buenos estudiantes. Creemos que necesitas más atención en clase y un ambiente seguro para ir a
la escuela. Podemos mantener tu ambiente escolar seguro y cómodo solo con tu ayuda. Te
proporcionaremos todo lo que podamos para garantizar tu seguridad y felicidad durante estos
años. Además, trabajaremos muy diligentemente para brindarte una educación que te llevará a
donde quieras ir.

                            Pruebas, Evaluación y Retención
En Bennett Academy tenemos estándares muy altos. Es nuestra política considerar la retención
para cualquier estudiante que no pase al menos una prueba de AzMERIT (examen del estado) en
los grados 3-8. Esta política ayuda a garantizar que los estudiantes estén preparados para
satisfacer las demandas de la escuela secundaria y más allá.

Los estudiantes en el octavo grado también están obligados a completar una tarea del libro del
octavo grado. Esta tarea es un requisito de graduación para Bennett Academy. Cualquier

estudiante que no complete este requisito no podrá participar en la ceremonia de graduación de
octavo grado.
                                           Asistencia
                                            Tardanzas
La puntualidad se toma en serio en Bennett Academy. La escuela comienza a las 8:45 AM y se
espera que los estudiantes estén en sus asientos y listos para aprender en ese momento. Todos los
estudiantes que lleguen tarde deben registrarse en la oficina y recibir un pase para la clase. La
tardanza conlleva la consecuencia de deméritos y detenciones.

                                            Ausencias
   1. Los padres deben llamar a la oficina para informar sobre una ausencia antes de las 10:30
      a.m.
   2. Después de 5 ausencias, se enviara una carta a casa alertando a los padres de las posibles
      ramificaciones legales del absentismo, y se puede notificar al Tribunal de Menores del
      Condado de Maricopa.
   3. Después de 10 ausencias consecutivas injustificadas, el / la estudiante puede ser dado de
      baja. Las enfermedades prolongadas serán manejadas por la administración de manera
      individual.
   4. Las ausencias excesivas serán reportadas como tales al Departamento de Educación de
      Arizona.
   5. Cuando su hijo/a está ausente el 5% de los días escolares posibles, lo consideramos un
      riesgo de retención. A las 19 ausencias, por cualquier motivo que no sea hospitalización,
      se le puede solicitar al estudiante que repita en año escolar.

Una Ausencia Justificada es causada por una verdadera emergencia o enfermedad grave y es
notificada a la oficina por los padres antes de la escuela, el día de la ausencia. Los padres
pueden necesitar presentar pruebas si el absentismo se vuelve problemático. Una ausencia
justificada bajo la Ley del Estadode Arizona puede deberse a enfermedad, citas médicas, duelo,
emergencias familiares y suspensiones fuera de la escuela.

Una Ausencia Injustificada es aquella que no es notificada por los padres o causada por una
razón ilegítima o frívola; es decir, "Johnny no quería ir a la escuela hoy", o "Johnny se le paso el
autobús, y decidió quedarse en casa", o "Johnny se va de vacaciones", o "Necesito salir de la
ciudad por una semana y mi hijo/a se va conmigo".

Solo un padre o tutor puede llamar para notificar la ausencia. No se aceptarán llamadas de
estudiantes o hermanos para notificar las ausencias. Las ausencias son justificadas o
injustificadas y están determinadas por la ley estatal.

Política de Asistencia
La asistencia a la escuela no es solo un buen hábito, la ley estatal lo requiere. La Ley Estatal de
Arizona (15-802.E, 15-803.) requiere que cada persona que tenga la custodia de un niño/a entre
las edades de seis y dieciséis años se asegure de que ellos asistan a la escuela durante todo el
tiempo que la escuela este en sesión a menos que no pueda asistir debido a una enfermedad u
otra razón.

Para alentar y mejorar la asistencia escolar, Bennett Academy ha implementado un programa de
absentismo escolar en colaboración con el Tribunal de Menores del Condado de Maricopa. Este
programa de absentismo escolar se llama C.U.T.S. (Supresión de absentismo escolar unificado
de la corte). Seguiremos de cerca la asistencia. Se espera que su hijo/a esté en la escuela todos
los días, a menos que haya una razón justificada para no estar. Una ausencia se define como un
mínimo de un período de clase perdido. Una ausencia injustificada contará como un día de
ausencia injustificada según lo define la ley. Un estudiante está "habitualmente ausente" si
tiene cinco o más ausencias injustificadas. Un estudiante que está ausente más del diez por
ciento (18 días) del número requerido de días escolares por año se considera que tiene
"ausencias excesivas" sea la ausencia justificada o injustificada.

Cuando un estudiante tiene cinco o más ausencias injustificadas o 19 ausencias excesivas
(justificadas O injustificadas), el estudiante puede ser citado al Programa CUTS a través del
Tribunal de Menores. La audiencia se llevará a cabo en el Centro de la Corte Juvenil. Un
padre o tutor legal debe estar presente con el estudiante en el momento de la audiencia. Las
consecuencias en la audiencia pueden incluir lo siguiente: asistencia requerida del padre y el niño
a una clase de educación (que se llevará a cabo los sábados), horas de trabajo asignadas al niño/a,
asesoramiento, etc. Al padre o tutor se le aplicará una tarifa de desvío de $50. El incumplimiento
de estas consecuencias puede resultar en la suspensión de la licencia de conducir de su hijo, o la
imposibilidad de obtener una licencia de conducir hasta que cumpla 18 años y/o los
procedimientos judiciales formales. Es responsabilidad de los padres o tutores asegurar la
asistencia de sus hijos en un entorno académico aprobado. Si no toma las medidas necesarias
para brindarle a su hijo la educación adecuada, puede recibir una citación. Si es declarado
culpable, es un delito menor de Clase 3 punible con tiempo en la cárcel y/o multa.

La educación de su hijo/a es extremadamente importante para nosotros. Este programa es otra
forma en que Bennett Academy está trabajando con la comunidad para garantizar una educación
de calidad para todos los estudiantes. Tenga en cuenta que la escuela también se reserva el
derecho de que un Oficial de CUTS hable en orientaciones y asambleas, así como a grupos

Política de Visitantes
                                   Visitantes en el Campus

Cualquier visitante en el campus DEBE hacer lo siguiente al ingresar a Bennett Academy
durante el horario escolar:
   A. Ingresar solo por la puerta de seguridad delantera.
   B. Registrarse como visitante en la oficina.
   C. Recibir una etiqueta de visitante que se debe usar en todo momento mientras se encuentre
       en el campus.
   D. Registrase cuando salga del campus y devolver la etiqueta de visitante al personal de la
       oficina.
   E. Salir del campus solo por la puerta de seguridad delantera.
   F. Cualquier artículo (almuerzo, suministros, medicamentos, tarea, etc.) que sea entregado
       por un visitante para un estudiante o miembro de la facultad DEBE dejarse en la oficina.
       Un miembro del personal de Bennett Academy entregará el artículo en el lugar apropiado
       del campus.

                                  Código de Vestimenta
Bennett Academy tiene altos estándares para nuestros estudiantes, el personal y la
administración. Vestirse con un uniforme limpio nos ayudará a todos a mantener nuestra
dignidad personal y eliminará las distracciones. Los uniformes se deben usar a diario. Los
nuevos estudiantes sin uniforme después del período de gracia (2 días) experimentarán una
consecuencia "adecuada". Nuestra política de uniformes NO es opcional; a los estudiantes de
Bennett Academy sin uniforme se les proporcionará una camisa o pantalón de uniforme
adecuado, si hay disponibles, o se llamará a los padres para que traigan un uniforme adecuado.

                                         Uniformes
   1. Se requieren pantalones caqui o negro y camisas con el logotipo de Bennett Academy.
          A. Faldas, shorts, y pantalones color caqui o negro. No faldas o shorts muy cortos.
          B. Camisas polo deben ser moradas o negras sin adorno en el cuello. Las camisas no
             deben tener un logotipo de marca cosido o impreso, que no sea el logotipo de
             Bennett Academy. NO se aceptan otros logotipos.
          C. Las camisetas rojas de Bennett Academy son aceptables los viernes.
          D. Las camisas de uniforme no se deben atar ni modificar.
   2. Pantalones deben estar al menos a una pulgada del piso.
   3. Pantalones tipo cargo holgados no son permitidos.
   4. Se recomienda que las camisas sean fajadas y que usen cinturón.
   5. Faldas y shorts no deben pasar de 2 a 3 pulgadas por encima de la rodilla.
   6. Zapatos cerrados deben usarse con medias. Zapatos deportivos funcionan mejor para la
      comodidad y tiempo de actividad. No se permiten sandalias, chanclas u otros zapatos con
      punta abierta.
   7. No se deben usar gorras durante el día escolar; a menos que sea al air libre.

Vestimenta Inadecuada/Adornos

Los siguientes artículos no están permitidos para los estudiantes en todo momento (incluso
cuando al asistir a eventos patrocinados por la escuela, dentro y fuera de nuestro campus)

   1. Pantalones que cuelgan a más de dos pulgadas de la entrepierna, o "caídos".
   2. Cadenas o guantes
   3. Camisas que no se ajusten al pantalón o la falda, o que no cubra todo el estómago, la
       espalda o los costados. No se debe mostrar carne entre la línea de la camisa y la línea del
       cinturón.
   4. Botas con punta de acero.
   5. Ropa rasgada o manchada. Los estudiantes DEBEN venir a la escuela con un
       uniforme limpio todos los días.
   6. Ropa excesivamente ajustada (ropa que es seductora o que distrae) o ropa excesivamente
       grande.
   7. Gafas del sol usadas adentro.
   8. Zapatos de plataforma (más de 1 pulgada) o botas hasta la rodilla.
   9. Ropa o joyas con implicaciones antisociales (incluidos, entre otros, símbolos de
       pandillas, sexo, drogas, alcohol, calaveras, armas o violencia).
   10. Tatuajes o aretes visibles en cualquier lugar, excepto un arete estándar por oreja. No se
       permiten aretes "extremos".
   11. Las camisetas no deben ser visibles colgando debajo de las camisas del uniforme.
   12. Las calaveras como decoración son inconsistentes con nuestra misión y visión y no están
       permitidas en la ropa, zapatos, joyas, etc. Por favor no traiga artículos como tal a la
       escuela.
   13. Los mohawks y otros estilos y colores de cabello que distraen no son consistentes con
       nuestra política de uniformes y por lo cual no son permitidos. Es posible que se requiera
       que los estudiantes que violen esta política corrijan la violación antes de regresar a la
       escuela. Esto incluye colores no naturales y cabello multicolor, cabello largo en la cara
       o cabello sin peinar. El cabello largo debe estar recogido con una banda de goma u otro
       artículo para mantener el cabello fuera de la cara del estudiante.

                               Política de Ropa de Abrigo
   1. Las chaquetas negras estilo sudadera con capucha con son la prenda exterior requerida.
      Puede comprar una chaqueta negra y agregar el logotipo de la escuela en la tienda de
      Collette's o solo comprar una chaqueta negra.
   2. Las chaquetas o sudaderas no se pueden usar afuera después de que el clima alcance los
      80 grado.

Política Para Después de Escuela
Los estudiantes pueden permanecer en el campus después de la escuela solo si están
involucrados en una actividad aprobada o si están trabajando directamente con un maestro o
miembro del personal. De lo contrario, los estudiantes deben abandonar la propiedad de la
escuela después de salir de su última clase. Todos los estudiantes que no participen directamente
en una actividad aprobada después de la escuela DEBEN estar fuera del campus a más tardar 15
minutos después de que la escuela haya salido.

Solo los estudiantes que están en un equipo están permitidos en las prácticas. Todos los
estudiantes en el campus deben ser supervisados directamente.

    Elegibilidad para Actividades Extracurriculares (Incluyendo Deportes)
Creemos en la regla de "no pasar, no jugar". Un estudiante debe tener una "C" o mejor en todas
las materias básicas en la boleta de calificaciones o informe de progreso más reciente, para ser
elegible para actividades extracurriculares, incluyendo el consejo estudiantil y teatro. Además, si
un estudiante tiene 10 o más deméritos (ver política de disciplina), él o ella no serán elegibles. La
elegibilidad cambia solo en la boleta de calificaciones o el informe de progreso, o la pérdida de
deméritos. Las materias básicas se definen como matemáticas, estudios sociales, ciencias y artes
del lenguaje.

                                  Bailes y Fiestas Escolares
Los bailes solo pueden ocurrir entre las 6:00 p.m. y las 9:00 p.m. Los bailes deben ser aprobados
de antemano. Deben estar acompañados por al menos dos adultos, uno empleado de la escuela y
uno de los padres. (No se permiten hermanos, tíos, tías, etc.) ¡¡No se permiten invitados
NUNCA!!

Los teléfonos celulares deben mantenerse en la mochila del alumno o encerrados en el casillero
del alumno en todo momento. El uso del teléfono celular solo está permitido en la oficina de
la escuela.

Bennett Academy no es responsable por la pérdida de teléfonos celulares, dispositivos
electrónicos o propiedad personal. Cualquier dispositivo electrónico personal, incluyendo
teléfonos celulares que se usan mientras se encuentra en el campus, será confiscado y entregado
a la administración. La administración mantendrá el dispositivo hasta que sea reclamado por un
padre o tutor.

                                Política de Comportamiento
Se espera que los estudiantes de Bennett Academy demuestren un comportamiento apropiado en
todo momento mientras estén en el campus o en cualquier evento patrocinado por la escuela.

Estudiantes, ustedes y sus padres son responsables de estas pautas, límites y expectativas. La
ignorancia no es una excusa. La modificación del comportamiento de estudiantes individuales
que asisten a Bennett Academy no es una prioridad del personal o la administración. Si tiene un
problema o una pregunta sobre las expectativas de comportamiento:

   1. Primero, por favor hable con el maestro de la clase.
   2. Segundo, si el problema no se resuelve, haga una cita para hablar con un administrador.

                                 Reglas Generales del Aula
   A.   Tus profesores merecen tu respeto. Por favor muéstrales ese respeto.
   B.   Los estudiantes necesitan mantenerse en la tarea. Esto significa no hablar sin permiso.
   C.   No se permiten alimentos ni bebidas que no sean agua en las aulas. No hay excepción.
   D.   No se permite mascar chicle en el campus, punto! Esto incluye después de la escuela.
   E.   Pida permiso al maestro/a si necesita salir del aula; Esto incluye ir al baño o al bebedero.
        Los maestros/a distribuirán pases para su uso, o usarán un sistema que sea justo y no
        perjudicial.
