SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Family, Jesus said to his disciples: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.” -Luke 6:36-37 In today’s gospel Jesus teaches us to be generous with our love. He tells us to love not only those who love us in return, but to love our enemies as well. It is easy to love the people who love us, but we need God’s help to love all people. As disciples of Jesus who follow his teachings, we are to love God and love all people. To love all means to love those close to us, our neighbors, those far off, sinners, and those whom we consider “enemies.” To love all means to turn the other cheek, give to those who ask, do unto others, lend without expecting repayment, and judge not lest you be judged. God gives us the grace to love all people. Loving without boundaries brings us together in peace and fellowship. Jesus loved all people, even those who hurt him. Those who put him to death saw him as “the enemy” and they mocked and shunned him. He even forgave the very people who mocked him and killed him. Jesus showed us the kind of love that God has for us. God loves us beyond our expectations, beyond anything we can possibly imagine. Even when we feel that we do not deserve to be loved, God loves us anyway. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20th as World Day of Social Justice. Observance of this day supports efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all. Let us pray for God’s will for all people and for the elimination of institutionalized systems of inequality and oppression. Look with pity, O God, upon the people of the earth who live with injustice, terror, disease and death as their constant companions. Help us to eliminate cruelty to these our neighbors, our brothers and sisters throughout the world. Strengthen those who spend their lives establishing equal protection of the law and equal opportunities for all. Grant that every one of us may enjoy a fair portion of the riches of the earth and flourish as you intend. We pray in the name of the God of All. Amen. - chausa.org Love, Fr. Francis “ But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend Please remember in your prayers without expecting anything back...” (Luke 6:35) Easier said than done, right? But, if we are to imitate Christ, most of Steve Bowman, father of Betsy (Steve) Johnson and us need to practice mercy and compassion more frequently. Start grandfather of Elliott, Aiden, and Quinlan Johnson with the little daily annoyances that we experience, the unkind word Bob ‘Midge’ Meyers, brother of Joan Lesch and or hateful glance we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that uncle of Kathy Lesch person, try saying a quick prayer for that person. Praying for our enemies doesn’t change them, it changes us. Mercy and compassion will keep us on the path to holiness. - www.archstl.org May they have eternal peace in heaven.
