† ST. MARY † ST. RICHARD † PAGE 1 † St. MaryJuly† 11St.(11Richard de julio) 2021 July 11, 2021 In Today’s Gospel I expect that most of us have some basic understanding of what it means to be a Catholic. You may not un- derstand the finer points of the hypostatic union or of concupiscence, but by growing up in a Christian cul- ture, some bits of the faith are bound to sink in. In today’s gospel, Jesus is approached by a scholar of the law who asks him what he must do “to inherit eter- nal life.” Jesus asks the scholar what the law says. The scholar is able to quote from the Scripture but desires to go deeper. Jesus then uses the parable of the Good Samaritan to help him understand that to fulfill God’s law requires a complete commitment to loving our brothers and sisters, not just those close to us, but every- one. Let us commit to not just loving our neighbors but to acting according to that love towards them. Family of Parishes As of July 1, we officially entered into our new Family of Parishes. We are now joined with St. Mary in Wayne, St. Richard in Westland, Ss. Simon and Jude in Westland, St. Mary Cause of Our Joy in Westland, and St. Thomas the Apostle in Garden City. I encourage you to take the opportunity to begin to get to know these parishes. The Family of Parishes initiative is more than just a reorganization of the Archdiocese. In his pastoral letter, Unleash the Gospel, Archbishop Vigneron calls on us all to become Joyful Missionary Disciples. We are called to band together with joy and go out to Unleash the Gospel of Jesus Christ. By working together, we can be more effective disciples, more effective missionaries. Trivia Night Trivia Night has returned to St. Mary. Come and join us for a night of fun, fellowship, and trivia. We are kick- ing off the trivia season on Saturday, July 24. The doors to the Activity Center open at 6 PM, Trivia begins at 7 PM. For $25, you and your team (4 people max) can enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship while testing your knowledge of the trivial. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. Future dates for Trivia Nights will be September 11, November 13, January 8, March 5, and July 9. For more information, go to www.stmarywayne.org. Summer Vacation Summer is a time when we take the opportunity to get away from the everyday grind. We visit friends and family, visit tourist sites, or just get away for a little bit. While we are on vacation, we must remember to find time for the Lord. The obligation to attend Sunday mass is serious. This obligation does not go away just be- cause we have gone away. As you are planning your vacation, please take time to plan how you will make it to mass. The website Mass- Times.org is a great resource in helping to find a church near your vacation spot. Just enter the ZIP Code or the city where you will be, and it will give you the mass times at churches near your location. If it is not possible to attend mass, (e.g. you’re camping in the woods a hundred miles from civilization), it is still important to take time for the Lord. When you would normally attend mass on Sunday, set aside some time for prayer and reflection on the Scriptures for Sunday.
