The Dawnay Estate The Dawnay Estate comprises two separate Estates, one centred on Wykeham near Scarborough, the other around Danby near Whitby. Wykeham Abbey is situated on the site of a Cistercian Nunnery founded in 1153. Originally a small Elizabethan House, it was substantially altered and enlarged in 1904. The house remains the private home of Lord Downe. The Estate at Wykeham is the centre for most of the Estate’s enterprises, many of which were established in the mid-1970s. These include Wykeham Mature Plants, the largest producer and supplier of semi-mature trees, shrubs and hedging in the North East of England, St Helens in the Park Ltd which comprises a 250 pitch caravan park and the Downe Arms hotel, and a 2,400 acre, mainly arable farm. The most recent enterprise is the North Yorkshire Water Park, an Aquapark and Fishery based at Wykeham Lakes. This opened in July 2017. The remainder of the Wykeham Estate comprises various residential properties, several commercial units, approximately 815 acres of woodlands and the Wykeham Quarry operated by Hanson Aggregates. Over thirty (independent) businesses are also based on the Wykeham Estate with an estimated combined turnover of £20 million and employing over 120 staff. Many of these businesses are based at The Wykeham Business Centre (9,500 sqft of offices) and Farfield (18,500 sqft of workshops). These two developments were undertaken in 2004. At Danby, there are twelve tenanted farms, Danby Castle, which is now a successful wedding venue, Forresters Lodge, a holiday let, and the Moors Centre, a former Shooting Lodge, which is leased to the North York Moors National Park. Dawnay Sporting is a commercially managed shooting enterprise based on the Danby Moors (grouse) and at Wykeham (partridge and pheasant). Last season over 100 days were let across the two shoots. The Dawnay Estate employs just over 40 personnel.
