Martin Keighley | HORSES IN TRAINING 2021/22 A Magnificent Summer, With Winners Galore… Looking Forward to the Main Winter Season for All our Horses and Owners After the 18 months we have all endured and with the world starting to get back to some sort of normality again, there has never been a better time to get involved with racehorse ownership. There are a wide selection of ownership options depending on budget, and we pride ourselves on not only how well we communicate with our owners but also our open house policy and financial transparency. Do come and #BePartOfIt. We have been involved with the Lycetts Team Champion Awards since their inception in 2017 and applaud the initiative and how fantastic it is for racing as a whole as they recognise and celebrate the best teams on racehorse training yards. In going through the entry process for these awards each year we have learnt things as well and are always striving to improve how we look after our team who work so hard for us and look after our horses so brilliantly. The awards changed slightly this year and have been put into four sections and we are proud to share with you that we have once again been awarded Gold status, but this year have achieved this in each of the four sections: • Inclusive Recruitment and Effective Induction Systems • Ensuring a Safe Working Environment • Development and Training • Reward and Recognition In fact, we were on the final shortlist for ‘Inclusive Recruitment and Effective Induction Systems’ and also the Team made the final 10 for the Lycetts Team Champion Award too and, whilst we didn’t make it to the final Zoom judging, we are thrilled to have been shortlisted in these two sections. What a great initiative National Racehorse Week is (12 – 19 What a wonderful summer we have enjoyed. September) and well done to fellow Cotswold Trainer Richard Phillips for this great idea. He stayed on strongly behind Nicky Henderson’s well thought of mare, Theatre Glory; the second Boombawn, was later sold for £55,000. Martin was delighted with his performance. He said: “Hogan, as we call him, ran very well in what was a good race for the time of the year, and we believe he is a very exciting prospect. Following a summer break, he has now returned to training and will be running in either another bumper or making his hurdles debut in October/November.” Hogan is by Sageburg, who has already produced many top class horses and the winning dam is closely related to Graded winner Graphic Approach and Irish Grand National winner Feathered Gale. Approximately 3/4 of the 125 shares have already been sold to those who were involved with him in 2021. We are selling the remaining shares at £360 each which includes the share purchase cost and all keep costs for 2022. He finished 3rd of 10 runners in a hurdle race on his debut after running exceptionally green early on. However, he ran on strongly when he worked out what was being asked of him. The Racing Post analysis of his performance says “has a good pedigree for jumping, will learn plenty from the experience, and can win races." We’ve very recently purchased the horse (through bloodstock agent Gerry Hogan) privately from John Halley. Martin has had great success with buying horses from John Halley in the past - namely Any Currency, Found On and Kazontherazz – all three being super types that Martin has been able to obtain significant improvement from once transferred to his care. Nobby is a super mover and Martin is convinced will improve significantly as he strengthens up. His current thinking is to get him ready to run in hurdle races from around October.. He looks a certain winner and is an exciting horse for the future.
