Racing Report Saturday August 22nd ITM Interprovincial was raced on a pretty good slow 7 for this time of the year and was taken out by the Chris Wood trained Pacorus. It made for a great day for the visiting Cambridge Trainer as he won earlier with hot pot Wooden Edge. A poor start to the season for local trainers with no winners. The set-up in the ITM room again was outstanding and their guests really help make this day. Thursday September 9th A heavy 10 track for our first Industry Midweek meeting of the season. Two local winners Always Dreaming for Ilone Kelly and Art Deco for Allan Sharrock. Saturday September 24th No local winners again at Xtreme Raceday. The highlight of the day had to be the classy St Emilion winning the Powerworx Greys in a close finish. Only an average Saturday crowd but the weather wasn’t flash with rain throughout the day. Thursday October 27th A double to Allan Sharrock with wins by Victoria’s Legacy and Ishinktaatldo was matched by Stratford’s Jeff Bliss showing the importance of midweek industry days in Taranaki’s Racing Infrastructure. Twilight Friday November 18th Fine weather for the first twilight of the season saw a good crowd enjoy the racing, although the slow track saw starter numbers down on budget. A double to Rob Patterson with Fascino Lass and Woodbine Lad and Malibu Miss winning for Sandy Dravitzki. Thursday December 1st Another large Christmas at the Races corporate crowd witnessed some good racing on a Dead 6 track. The only local winner was Tellyuwhat for Allan Sharrock. Saturday December 24th Pretty reasonable fields, good crowd but only one local winner Light Em Up for Janelle Millar. As the only Saturday thoroughbred meeting, the off-course turnover was very respectable. This season we don’t have this date as Manawatu return to the pre-Christmas Saturday slot. Tuesday December 27th With racing only 3 days previous, the fields were fairly small but the racing was enjoyed by our usual large post-Christmas crowd. Locals won half the card with a double to John Wheeler with Alamcferson and Vencedora whilst Allan Sharrock won with Mars Bar and Ilone Kelly successful with Red Rascal. Thursday January 5th The decision to run two one day meetings for harness was not successful. It created a lot of angst with thoroughbred participants as we saved the rails for the harness meeting. Next year we only have the one harness raceday in March. The feature race the Woodlands Stud Taranaki Breeders Stakes was won in a stirring finish by the Josh Dickie driven Alta Valencia. Whilst the fields were reasonable, it was disappointing to only have 8 races. -3-
Speirs Wireline Local syndicate Winners Circles pride and joy Effectav winning on her home track. Linwood Park Waikato victory in the ITM Interprovincial excited connections La Nuova at the Birdcage presentation. Apparelmaster www.platinumhomesnz.co.nz Our King Sway finishes strongly to win the Platinum Homes Taranaki Cup 2017. -4-
Twilight Friday February 10th This twilight raceday moves to pre-Christmas next season and may be more successful there as it has struggled to reach the turnover we had hoped. Still with strong support from Speirs Wireline, it was a highly successful day. Effectav started the ball rolling by winning the first for the Taranaki Racing Club Syndicate. The other local winner was On Debut for Allan Sharrock. Saturday February 18th Drizzle and a slow 8 track meant that Platinum Homes Taranaki Cup day wouldn’t be quite as successful as we would have liked. The cup was taken out convincingly by Our King Sway whilst the Phoenix Park 2YO Classic was taken out by Irish Flame trained by John Wheeler. This was a top effort as the Zed 2YO defied popular belief in easily accounting for the remainder of the field after being slow away. This season the Avondale/Taranaki date clash will be avoided which should lead to significantly better fields. Thursday March 2nd The Revital Fertilisers Taranaki Cup went north to the Tony Herlihy trainers Walkinshaw who justified his favourite tag with a strong victory. Only 9 races again, hopefully next year we will get more races off the ground. Thursday April 13th Raining and a heavy track for the autumn mid-week raceday meant not large fields. Locals had a good day winning four. A double to Allan Sharrock with Jackson Road and Ladies First who carried on with her good form becoming a black type winner. The other two victory’s went to Rosewood for Marilyn Paewai and Tinkalicious for Janelle Millar. Saturday May 13th 70+ mls of rain heading up to the meeting meant 37 less horses than May 2016. Obviously turnover and profitability took a hit because of this. Two local winners Rosewood again for Marilyn Paewai and Sakura for Gary McBeth. Sakura’s was a great effort by horse and rider as the saddle slipped and gave Holly Andrew an uncomfortable ride. Thursday June 8th Locals won 4 of the first five races. Rhythmic Dancer a welcome win for Bryce Revell whilst Katie McKeen again showed her liking for Pukekura Raceway with a 9L victory. Call Doubt for Glenys Hayward won again and Ruby Love just got up on the line to give Janelle Millar victory. Saturday July 22nd The Powerworx Taranaki Cup. After a terrible week weather wise, the decision was made to postpone to Sunday 23rd. This meet with universal approval from the Industry as the early decision allowed all to plan accordingly to race on the best day to ensure the whole raceday could be run without incident. The Powerworx Taranaki Cup was a terrific field and was won in a stirring finish by Longchamps, he may be back next year to attempt the three peat. Pretty good turnout for a Sunday. Local winners were course specialist Katie McKeen for Gary McBeth, Rosewood; a very game wee filly for Marilyn Paewai and in the last Allan Sharrock trained Landlord. This last victory helped Board Vice-Chairman and co-owner Noel Stanley to win the punters comp and help finance his impending move to town! -5-
Winners Trained On The Track A fairly ordinary total for Pukekura Raceday trained winners for the 2016/17 season with 75. Allan Sharrock easily the most wins with 28. With horse numbers decreasing, it it unlikely that New Plymouth trained winners will exceed 100 again in the foreseeable future. Sponsors The President and Board of Taranaki Racing Inc acknowledge the wonderful support from race sponsors during the racing season. We urge you where possible to support these firms as they have supported us.
