About Mudjimba SLSC Our proud history Saturday 21st September 1996 was a very proud day for all Club members when the flags were put up on Mudjimba Beach for the first time. The community of Mudjimba and surrounding areas would get a dedicated group of people to provide a service that had been needed for a number of years. The IRB, Surf Truck, Rescue Boards, Rescue Tubes, Stretchers, Oxy-Vivas gathered to form the Club, were stored at members’ houses at Mudjimba and Pacific Paradise until a kind man, Les Molle allowed us to use his single garage on the corner of Mudjimba Beach Road and Kawana Street to store it all. Mudjimba SLSC had a base to work from however a single garage was not big enough to store all of our equipment so the truck went to someone’s house and the IRB went somewhere else. They had to be gathered together for patrol every patrol morning and put away at the end of the day. In 1998 Club members banded together and built the Beach Tower. In September 1999 construction commenced on the Clubhouse and was finished December 1999. Mudjimba Nippers commenced in October 2001 and it made Mudjimba SLSC complete. Hard work was done by the Junior Activities Committee to achieve the end result and it has been a great asset for the Club. Many Nipper parents have contributed to the success of Nippers and have assisted the Club by becoming patrolling members. We look forward to many of the Nippers becoming patrolling members in the future years. The Club Emblem The Osprey was decided upon because of the presence of the bird in the sand dunes, and they are seen regularly hovering over the water at Mudjimba. Mudjimba SLSC’s colours Navy Blue, Teal and White were decided upon because it represented the Mudjimba, Pacific Paradise area. Pacific Paradise School’s colour is Teal and Navy Blue. North Shore Soccer Club’s colours are Navy Blue and White and the North Shore Jets AFL Club were Navy Blue and White. Red and Yellow Flags The red and yellow colours found their way into surf life saving clubs from the international code of naval signals, in which the sign for 'man overboard' is a square divided diagonally between red and yellow. Flags and signs have always been used to signify either safe or dangerous areas to swim, but it wasn't until the 1930's that the red and yellow colours came to represent Surf Life Saving in Australia. In 1935, red and yellow replaced the blue and white flags which had been used in the 1920's to mark safe bathing areas, although the colours were divided diagonally, unlike the horizontal red and yellow used today. Club and Activity Management Working with children ‘Suitability Card’ (Blue Card) Surf Life Saving Australia requires that any person over the age of 18 years, working with persons under the age of 18 years, apply for a Suitability Card (Blue Card) issued by the Commission for Children and Young People. It is also Club policy that all members over the age of 18 apply for this card. Please contact the Club for the required application or renewal forms. Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy Mudjimba Surf Lifesaving Club is committed to providing a safe environment for children and youth in its care. Children and Youth are defined as those under the age of 18 years old. Mudjimba Surf Life Saving Club has in excess of 160 members in this demographic. Mudjimba Surf Lifesaving Club has implemented our Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy in line with the SLSQ Child & Youth Risk Management Strategy which falls in line with the Commission’s Act to have a written risk management strategy in place to comply with the minimum requirements specified in the Commission for Children and Young People Amendment Regulation (No.1) 2006. The strategy and resource is based around 8 key mandatory requirements: Commitment 1. A statement about commitment, (‘Statement of Commitment’) to the safety and wellbeing of children and the protection of children from harm; and 2. A code of conduct for interacting with children and young people. Capability 3. Recruitment, selection, training and management procedures for paid employees and volunteers. Concerns 4. Policies and procedures for handling disclosures and suspicions of harm, including reporting guidelines; 5. A plan for managing breaches of the risk management strategy; and 6. Risk management plans for high risk activities and special events. Consistency 7. Policies and procedures for compliance with blue card legislation including maintaining a register of staff who hold blue cards; and 8. Strategies for communication and support including: a) written information for parents/carers, paid employees and volunteers outlining the risk management strategy; and Page 4
b) training material for paid employees and volunteers to help them identify risks of harm and handle disclosures. Our ‘Statement of Commitment’ is now on all notice boards and the resource which is a large folder of policies, procedures, guidelines forms and templates dealing with all aspects of child protection and safety is kept in the back administration office. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our children safe, so if you see or hear of any suspicious activity, it must be reported. Depending on the immediacy or seriousness of any suspicious activity or act, a report can be made to the Club President, Club Captain, Youth Development Officer, Junior Activities Chairperson, the Police or the Commission for Children. For any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Club President, Darrin Edwards at president@mudjimbasurf.com.au Parent responsibilities How to get involved In order for Junior Activities to exist, the support of volunteers in various roles throughout the season is crucial. Regardless of weather you are a strong swimmer or not, there will always be somewhere you can lend a helping hand. It encompasses both practical and beach based activities and education components that develops understanding, skill and values relative to surf lifesaving and aquatic safety, management and education. Each Nipper will complete a Surf Education Certificate relative to their age group and will receive this certificate at the end of the season to acknowledge their achievement. It is important that all Nippers are in attendance each week to fulfill the criteria. This program will run for the first 10 weeks of the season and must be completed prior to competing in the Surf Life Saving Branch titles in February. Nippers not in attendance for the majority of the sessions will not be awarded their relevant surf education certificate and will be ineligible to participate in Branch Titles. Surf Education overviews Surf Play is a program for the youngest members or ‘green caps’. Surf Play is about fun, participation and play. All water activities are conducted in shallow water and on the water’s edge. Surf Awareness is the first stage of children’s development in surf lifesaving. Children who have successfully completed the Surf Awareness course will have developed awareness, ideas, knowledge and skills about recreational safety in an aquatic environment. Surf Safety is stage two of children’s development in surf lifesaving. Children who have participated in and successfully completed the surf safety course will have enhanced their ideas, knowledge and skills in aquatic safety issues and self-survival techniques. They will develop an understanding and knowledge of the surf environment and its hazards. Surf Smart represents stage three of surf lifesaving development in the Surf Education program. Children who have participated in and successfully completed the Surf Smart course will have gained skills and knowledge commensurate with introductory surf lifesaving patrolling and sporting activities. NB: If a child joins in Under 10s for example, he/she must achieve Under 8 and Under 9 Awards as well in the first year. Nipper Captains At our annual Rainbow Beach Camp, where we put our U14s through a rigorous and intensive Surf Rescue Certificate course, we elect 2 male and 2 female Nipper Captains. The criteria for selection is 1. self-nomination, 2. a peer vote, 3. displaying leadership qualities, and 4. an interview with some of the Clubs’ Executive Members. The expectations for Nippers Captains is to attend leadership events, act as a peer liaison between Nippers and JAC and attend at least 2 JAC meetings. Nipper Captains are encouraged to engage with the Nippers and JAC to deliver support and feedback from a youth perspective. Page 10
