CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen) the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial 1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout the 60's remained in Division 3. The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday Side. In the 1976/77 Season Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The 1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in 1979/80. The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season, the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5 to the Senior League in six seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89.
The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and Committee members contributing their trades. A forth place finish and the winning of the Premier cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of the ninties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season. The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02 season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assisstant Jeff Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reigns. A mid table finish in their first season, saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning promotion was a good season in 2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season, when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol & District division 1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady march up the County league. The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County league to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went 1 better the following season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League Premier division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make things a little more difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the 2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed our present manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history. The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So 2019/20 season we will remain in the Western League Premier. This uncertainty of which League we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was kicked this Season. Three weeks before the season started we also lost our Manager and his Assistant. Scott Gibson & Justin Bishop are our Caretaker 1st team management team. UP THE SODS.
1st Team 50 Seasons Ago Chipping Sodbury 1969/70 Bristol & District Division 3. 25th October 1969 Chipping Sodbury 2 Bedminster Down Reserves 2 Sodbury should have won but had to settle for a draw. Although fielding a weaker team, Sodbury were soon on the attack but it was the Visitors who scored first, the outside right beating M.Boulton with a good shot. Sodbury hit back with good shots from Greenman, Brown and Messenger and eventually equalised with a corner which was hit hard and low to Greenman to bang into the net. Sodbury were well on top and Messenger was unlucky with a fierce shot which hit the post. However, Sodbury took the lead when Messenger made sure by crashing a shot from 15 yards. The Visitors equalised 5 minutes later after a misunderstanding between the Sodbury keeper and a defender, which resulted in the Centre forward putting the ball into an empty net. Sodbury still put in most of the attacks in the second half but missed good chances. In Defence Tily, Philips and Didcot played well, with goalkeeper Boulton making some fine saves. We Love Our New Away Kit Thank You Steve Chipping Sodbury Ladies football was reborn on 4th September 2016 when the newly formed team joined the Gloucestershire County Womens Football League Division 2. Their 1st season saw the title decided in March 2017, when 'The Sods' and Frampton Rangers Ladies met twice. The first encounter on 5th March at the Frampton Ground, ended with 'The Sods walking away with all 3 points after Rosanna Blacker scored two goals and Frampton did not reply. If the Ladies could Win or Draw against Frampton the following week back at the Ridings, the Championship was virtually in the bag. The following Sunday the Ladies went down 0 - 5 to Frampton and even though 'The Sods' won their last game, they lost the CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN LADIES Championship on Goal Difference. In the Cup, they reached the Semi-finals and only just lost by a single goal to the eventual cup winners Almondsbury UWE. League Runners-up and a SOUTH WEST REGIONAL WFL semi-final cup finish in their 1st season was a Great Start for the Club. 2017/18 Season saw the Ladies appear in Division 1 after their promotion. The Opposition was better and the games were tougher but they had another great season and finished 4th in the league. Their cup run was halted by their old foes Frampton Rangers in the quarter finals by 2 goals to 3. Our goals coming from S.Haynes and H.Tuckwell. A Higher league finish and a better cup run than the season before was the aim in season 2018/19 and the Ladies did not disappoint. A first time appearance in the Women's F.A.Cup with a 3rd place finish in the league and a fantastic cup run, saw the Sodbury Ladies have their most successful season yet. The Final of the cup in April did not go the way the Ladies wanted and were runners-up to the League and so Double winners Bristol Ladies Union.

HISTORY OF KEYNSHAM TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB Keynsham Town Football Club is over 120 years old, having been formed in 1896. In the early days it played at the “Hams” and then moved to “Gaston” in 1910. 1n 1925 the club played in Park Road and then moved again in 1930 to a pitch on Charlton Road. All these grounds have now been built on and there is no evidence of them. In 1939 the club was disbanded for the duration of the Second World War and was reformed in 1945 when the club found its new home at Crown Fields, where it has played ever since. It was due to the foresight of Roy Neal and Ken Dowling and the Committee at that time that the ground is left in trust to ensure that football can be played for the generations to come. The main clubhouse was built in the 1970’s with new dressing rooms added in 1984 and floodlights in 1989. In recent years the clubhouse has been upgraded and most recently the seats have been replaced, incidentally from the old Williams Stand at Ashton Gate, home of Bristol City Football Club. The club first played in the Bristol & District League and progressed to the Bristol Premier Combination. The club then moved into the Somerset County League and into the Western League in 1974. The club then found themselves in the first division of the Western League when that league was formed in season 1975/6 but returned to the Premiership in 1978/9 when Town finished as champions and then spent 5 years at the higher level only to find themselves in Division 1 for the start of season 1983/4. The Town then had a barren spell and it did not return to the top flight until 1997, finishing runners up to Melksham Town but the yoyo affect kicked in again two seasons later when the Town again returned to Division 1 only to return again in 2000 finishing runners up to Team Bath. After brief flirtations with the Premier Division in the mid-2000s, the Ks have been in Division 1 for several seasons now. Fortunes took a turn for the better when Chris King and Sean Day took over management duties in September 2014. Their first full season in charge, assisted by coach Russell Holt, saw the club finish within 10 points of the Division 1 winners. Then 2016-17 saw Keynsham’s best season for 15 years as we narrowly missed out on promotion, despite amassing 81 points. Chris and Sean both decided to step down from their roles in May 2017, but the club were fortunate enough to procure the services of John Allen from Wells City. John was a key figure in Wells’ promotion and Somerset Premier Cup double in 2015-16. Russ Holt stayed on and became John’s Assistant Manager. After agonisingly amassing an excellent 89 points but only finishing third in 2017-18, the club cemented all the hard work both on and off the pitch by storming to the Division One championship in 2018-19. A run of 24 wins from the last 26 games saw the Ks accrue 93 points and comfortably win the title by 9 points. This season sees the Ks back in the Premier Division for the fist time since the 2006-07 season. Away from the first team the Town were developing their football club with the introduction of a reserve side in 1987,who also won promotion to the Premier Division of the Somerset County League last season. The most noticeable achievement was the winning of the Somerset Senior Cup in 2003, the first time in 45 years, beating Westlands at Clevedon’s Hand Stadium. In 1988 an Under 18 Youth team was formed, competing in the Somerset Floodlight Youth League. In 2006/7 they were promoted to the First Division of this league.
An “A” team was formed in 1993 to compete in the Bath & District League; they are now in the Bristol & Suburban League. Both these sides were formed to support the growing number of players from within the Club’s successful youth section and to provide that important step between junior and adult football. The Town’s junior section has several sides playing competitive football on a regular basis. The club sees the progress of its junior club as the keystone to the club’s future development and playing success of the senior club with the sights set firmly on the local community for its inspiration and future success. With all the teams within the Town family, including the Ladies’ teams covered later in the programme, we have over 25 teams playing regularly for the Club. With a club of such size and diversity, it is an honour to be designated as a Community Development Club, the highest level of the FA’s Charter Standard initiative, something the club treasures and has set its stall out to operate under the ethos of the Charter. Keynsham Town FC – Player Profiles 2019/20 Goalkeeper Ashley Clark – Ash joined the Ks at the beginning of September and brings a wealth of experience between the sticks. He has been a member of Western League Premier Division winning sides at both Bishop Sutton and Bristol Manor Farm and securing his signature was a real coup for the club. Defenders Tauren Williams – Tauren signed for the 2016/17 season, joining us after 3 years at Almondsbury UWE. He began his youth career with Bristol Academy FC whilst at college, playing in central midfield and at right back. Tauren has become a vital member of the First Team squad. Nathan Curnock – joined the Ks for the 2015/16 season and made the left-back slot his own after previously playing as a left winger. Pacy and adds useful height to our defence at set pieces, although doesn’t usually net until Christmas has been and gone. Blew that stat out of the water last season though, with a wonderful solo goal in our first game of the season! Scott Saunders – A centre half or central midfielder who signed from Toolstation Premier side Wells City 2 years ago, Sauce possesses a range of passing and is excellent in the air. He can also play at full back, and his experience of gaining promotion from Division 1 four seasons ago with Wells City was invaluable for the Ks last season. Previous clubs include Brislington, Backwell and Cutters Friday. Rhymel Henderson – joined us last season and added some steel to the Ks defensive line. Rhymel quickly made himself first choice centre-half and also adds an aerial threat from set pieces. Has had plenty of Western League experience prior to joining the Ks. Mike Grist – Gristy is another ex-Wells city player who has played under John for many years; a no-nonsense centre half, he joined the Ks last September from Bristol Telephones, making his debut at Radstock Town. Also chips in with some vital goals. Jordan Anstey – has been at the club since his junior days, and has matured into a confident centre half, Can also cover at left back or midfield – his versatility will be vital over the coming months.
Midfielders Matt Curnock – an energetic player who came up through the Keynsham Town junior ranks and made his First Team debut as a teenager. Moved to Oldland Abbotonians in the summer of 2015, but returned to the Ks in November 2016, and is a key member of the squad. Adey Harvey – joined the Ks from Ashton & Backwell United in February 2017. Good on the ball and tough in the tackle, Adey is also a threat from set pieces. He has added some extra steel to our midfield and has a great attitude. Danny Spill - An attacking centre midfield player who signed from Wells City in 2017/18, Dan has a wealth of experience at this level gaining promotion from Division 1 along with Sauce with Wells and also playing in the Southern League with Mangotsfield United. Previous clubs include Bitton, Oldland and Longwell Green, starting his career at Cutters Friday. Again his experience was key in the Ks promotion charge last season. Matt Long – An attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, who also can play as a forward. “Marty” joined us from Somerset Premier League side Nailsea Utd where he played a key role as part of their successful title and cup winning team, which dominated the County League for many seasons. No other previous clubs, just a Nailsea United legend! Harley Purnell – it was a major coup when Harley decided to join the Ks back in January 2018 after 4 very successful years with Bristol Manor Farm with whom he gained promotion to the Southern League. He has an excellent football brain and is a born leader, taking the captain’s armband last and this season. Forwards Matt Brown – Matt was a player we sought for several years before he joined us 2 years ago, after 3 superb years at Fry Club yielded around 100 Somerset County League goals. Before Frys he had spells at Mangotsfield, Bitton and Oldland. Browner notched 29 times in his first season with the Ks, and bettered that last season with an impressive tally of 31 goals. Craig Wilson - A centre forward signed from Radstock Town who has lots of experience playing at this level and higher. When in full flow, Craig is hard to stop being, a powerful runner, strong in possession with a powerful shot. Previous clubs include Mangotsfield, Bitton, Odd Down, Oldland and Longwell Green. Mitch Purnell – Harley’s younger brother, Mitch joined us from Hengrove last season; a versatile player with an eye for goal and an important member of the squad. Tom Knighton – has just joined the Ks after playing for Bitton in the Western Prem last season. Tom has plenty of experience at Southern League level and is another great signing for us. Stefan Lee – Big Stef rejoined the Ks last season, but a knee injury limited his opportunities to break into the First Team. However Stef forced his way into the squad a couple of months ago with goals for the Reserves and has added an extra option to our versatile front line. Ben Harris – Ben left the Ks 2 years ago to play in the Premier Division with Brislington and Bitton; however he has returned this season. A firm fans’ favourite at Crown Fields and an exciting player.
Manager John Allen - Joined 2 years ago from Toolstation Premier side Wells City, where he was part of a successful management team alongside Mark Read. In their first season they guided Wells city to promotion in 2015-16, only missing out on the title on goal difference on the last day of the season, and in an amazing season winning the Somerset Premier Cup against all the odds beating the likes of Taunton, Frome, Weston Super Mare and Larkhall. Prior to Wells, he managed Cutters Friday 1st team In the Somerset Premier and prior to that the Reserves in a spell which spanned 8 seasons, getting to both the Somerset Junior and Senior Cup Finals respectfully and gaining promotion with the Reserves. Assistant Manager Russell Holt – 2015/16 was Russ’s first season directly involved with the club as both First Team Coach and joint Under 18s Manager. Russ has now stepped up to become John’s assistant and has loads of experience in both adult & youth football in the Bristol area – the beard to be feared! Coaches Jamie Price –a tough-tackling player who joined the Ks in November 2016 from Wells City. Jamie has now decided to concentrate on his coaching and provided excellent support to John & Russ last season. Andy Clark – “GARS” is Ash Clark’s father-in-law, so he joined the coaching staff in September 2018 when Ash joined the club. Loads of experience and a vital cog in our management team. Physio Rich Williams – Rich is a Keynsham Town legend who has been at the club for donkey’s years! He happily acts as physio to our Under 18s as well as the First Team. Club Man par excellence!

RESERVES HISTORY When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent two seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League in 1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions of Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but come runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up and getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol & District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing between the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in the Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season was another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combination Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combination. The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and winning 5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Season saw the team finish in 11th place and remain in the Premier Combination, the highest league standing in the Reserves History. CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN UNDER 18’s GLOUCESTERSHIRE YOUTH MID-WEEK FLOODLIT DIVISION UNDER 18’s MATCH REPORT Longlevens U18s 1 Chipping Sodbury Town U18s 2 26th September 2019 - Star player: Ben Ashpole CSTFC U18s recorded their second win of the season with a hard fought three points at Longlevens. The Sods dominated the opening 30 minutes and were rewarded when Josh Pandolfino scored his third goal in two games. With 21 minutes played Josh pressured the Longleven fullback winning the ball on the edge of the penalty area. Shrugging off his opponents attempts at a challenge he scored with a low shot past the onrushing keeper. Just a few minutes earlier the Sods had been unlucky not to take the lead when the officials failed to spot a close range shot that crossed the goal line after it had bounced off the underside of the cross bar and hit the back of the net before returning into play. The away side continued to press for a second and created several opportunities however their hosts managed to hold out to the break and a chance to regroup. The second half began in driving rain and the hosts immediately threatened. After just five minutes of the Longlevens equalised after Sodbury had failed to clear from a corner and the close range effort left keeper Joe Stott with no chance of making the save. With mounting pressure Ben Ashpole at the centre of the Sods defence marshalled his back line superbly. As the half progressed both sides struggled to create with defences and midfield on top. With four of the five minutes of added on time played Sodbury won a corner and when Longlevens failed to clear their lines Matt Janes was on hand to secure all three points for the Sods.
