BRITISH FRIESIAN NATIONAL SHOW Mark Logan, Northern Ireland Although Mark’s family were not dairy farmers he pretty much grew up with the Loughside herd of British Friesians, based in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, spending most of his school holidays and weekends on his friend’s dairy farm. It was there that his love of dairy cows and showing began. After A level he attended Greenmount Agricultural College where he achieved an OND in Agriculture with Distinction. His sandwich year was spent with the Carnageragh British Friesian Herd and then Mark worked with the Caddy Herd which was mainly British Friesian but with some Holstein influence was beginning to appear. From 1983 until 1990 he was share milking running his own small Ransevyn Herd alongside the Loughside Herd however the quota system led to the end of this enterprise and his herd was dispersed. In 1991 Mark began working at Clandeboye Estate, Co Down, Northern Ireland initially as herdsman/manager and then taking on his present role of Farm Manager within a year of coming to Clandeboye. The Clandeboye dairy herd consists of 70 Holstein and 30 Jersey cows plus followers. Highlights at Clandeboye have been transforming a very ordinary herd into the winning Holstein UK Premier Pedigree Herd in 2007 and achieving a Master Breeder Award in the same year. Successes at Shows have included - Supreme Champion at the 2007, 2008 and 2012 Irish National Holstein Show; Royal Ulster Interbreed Champion in 2008 with Clandeboye Champion Willow; Champion Jersey at the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015,2016 and 2017 Royal Ulster Winter Fairs with Clandeboye CR Evita also taking the Interbreed title in 2012. Several All-Britain nominations winning Holstein All Britain third calf cow in 2008 and Jersey All Britain Junior Cow in 2012 and 2017. Over the last number of years Mark has had judging assignments across the UK and Ireland for Holstein, Jerseys and Interbreed Classes including All Breeds at Agriscot 2016 and Emerald Expo 2017, The All Breeds all Britain Calf Show, The Dairy Event, The South West Dairy Show, Tullamore, The Welsh Dairy Show, Virginia, The Royal Welsh, The Royal Highland, The Great Yorkshire, The Royal Cornwall, UK Dairy Day and The Autumn Show on Jersey Island. Clandeboye is a 2000 acre privately owned country Estate situated 10 miles north east of Belfast owned by the Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava. Mark has been Farm Manager for the last 27 years. In that time many changes have taken place with diversification into yoghurt making starting in 2007. They now process about 95% of the herds’ milk production and retail it under the Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt brand. 2019 9
