Abortion and Life of the Mother We are nearing the end of April which means that we are weeks, maybe days, away from the U.S. supreme Court releasing its decision on the Dobbs. V . Jackson W omen’s Health Organization case. As we draw closer to the possible overturning of Roe v. Wade, a moment we have been hoping for since 1973, we reflect back on our 1846 abortion ban that kept the unborn safe before 1973 and will do so again. Our 1846 abortion ban makes Michigan a completely abortion-free state with the only exception being to save the life of the mother. As we get closer, it’s important to understand what exactly the life of the mother exception is, and why our state has one. Thanks to medical advances, truly life-threatening situations are even more exceedingly rare. In very rare circumstances, continuing a pregnancy would put the life of the mother at risk. This hardly ever happens as typically it is quicker and safer to deliver the baby by C-section and then treat the mother and the baby. For the babies that are not far enough along and are threatening the life of the mother, the doctor would still treat both mother and child but treatment for the mother may result in the death of the child. This is not the intent of the doctor or mother but again, could happen in very rare circumstances. The circumstances that could occur are ectopic pregnancies, placenta abruption, severe preeclampsia, etc. It must be made clear that the life of the mother does not mean “the health of the mother.” Due to the decision in Doe v. Bolton, the health of the mother means the physical, mental, social, and economic health, making any reason a woman would want and abortion valid. “Health” has been defined by the U.S. Supreme Court to mean “all factors” related to the “well-being” of women. All means everything, and everything in life impacts your well-being, so when people talk about “health exceptions” for abortion, they mean abortion should be legal for any reason imaginable. Right to Life of Michigan rejects abortions in cases where the child is disabled or has a serious medical condition, or the mother has a non-life-threatening medical condition. Because an unborn child is a human being with equal moral worth, their life shouldn’t be ended in situations where the pregnancy doesn’t pose a life-threatening risk. Dear Priests, Deacons, and Religious, As you know, we are expecting the U.S. Supreme Court to issue its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization anytime between now and the end of June. Given the possibility that the Court could use this case to overturn or significantly roll back Roe v. W ade, the need to be prepared for this deci- sion at the national, state, diocesan, and parish levels cannot be overstated. Regardless of what happens, there will likely be much attention in the media. We can certainly expect parishioners to be affected in various ways. The purpose of this message is to provide resources to help you speak to the Dobbs decision in a polarized culture. Anticipating increased calls for help, we must redouble our efforts to accompany women and couples who are facing unexpected or difficult pregnancies, as well as to offer mercy to those suffering from abortion. And we must certainly better communicate the Church’s pastoral response that already exists. It is sobering that recent communications research tells us that many Catholics do not see this compassionate response, and many are unaware of the Church's help for those in need. Sadly, they often see the Church as harsh and rigid rather than compassionate and merciful. The parish is a wonderful place to give witness to what is true compassion and mercy. I am happy to share a “Dobbs Parish Leader Kit” that I invite you to make use of, as you find helpful. The parish leader kit is a Dobbs-focused special edi- tion of the USCCB’s monthly Word of Life parish resource. Consider signing up for pro-life action alerts and the Word of Life, which is a monthly mailing of pro-life resources to assist you in your ministry. I hope you find this helpful.
