spectrum connection MARCH 2022 – ISSUE 156 FROM THE DESK OF: Dave Smalley The Dung Beetle. Founder | CEO Melanie and I were fortunate enough to take our first trip to South Africa this past Christmas. We went on safaris, visited many places, met many interesting people, and learned of a different culture. We saw and experienced things that we had only seen on a wildlife television show, or in National Geographic. Up close we viewed lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, rhinos, leopards, and well, you name it! It was a certainly a life altering experience. Out in the bush, it is a constant battle for survival for all beasts that live there. It is literally eat or be eaten. Our incredible guides educated us as to the tactics each uses for its survival and the procreation of it’s species. All fascinating stuff. Thanks Rudy, thanks Trevor! But of all the majestic and wonderful things we saw, I was super impressed with the lowly dung beetle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNjymt6oCcQ The dung beetle is powerful, determined, and is unwavering in his pursuits. He rolls dung into nearly perfectly round balls, sometimes 10 times his size. He can push something 10 times his weight and pull over 1,000 times his weight…the equivalent of you pulling 6, double-decker busses full of people. So, we watched this dung beetle roll his huge ball of dung…oh, I almost forgot, the female dung beetle RIDES on the ball, while the male pushes it with his back legs, sort of doing a reverse hand stand. The male pushes it far away from the dung, so no one will steal his ball, and he looks for some soft earth, then digs around and under the ball until it is buried in the earth. Sometimes he buries multiple balls, one on top of the other. The male and female mate inside the dung balls, their offspring are born and use the balls as nourishment, until they mature and make their way into the world. Watching all this in person, I just could not get over the strength and determination of the dung beetle. I would say that being called a dung beetle would be a great compliment. I now aspire to be more like the dung beetle. The lion is majestic, the elephant and giraffe amazing to see, but that darn dung beetle! He just soldiers on, day and night, working tirelessly. Just impressive. So if anyone ever says you remind them of a dung beetle, say thank you and be proud! Sincerely, Dave
FROM THE DESK OF: President What makes up your professional arsenal? What do you bring every day in your toolbox that you can’t live without? What do you NEED to navigate your day, personally and professionally? The next question is do you, will you, share your tools with others? If your tools make you that much more successful, imagine what they can do for others when you share them! One of our five pillars is that of LEADERSHIP. We talk a lot about “good enough is the enemy of great”. When you see your associates at work and think “well that’s good enough”, remember our collective desire to be GREAT. Dig into your toolbox and share your arsenal. Knowledge is power. Collaboration is a hallmark of our company. When we are active listeners, we learn from one another. I’m sure you know plenty of people that just want to do it “their way” and remain firm in their hardheadedness; change is hard but change also creates innovation, diversity, and a focus to be the best we can be, individually and collectively. Let’s not be afraid of suggestions, new ideas, or constructive criticism. Let’s have conversation! We are all playing on the same team, and we continue to have the same destination at heart; TO BE THE BEST WE CAN BE, to set ourselves apart from competitors and to be the brightest light we can be for our customers. So, add a flashlight to your toolbox and keep shining! Inspire, coach, communicate – all qualities of LEADERSHIP. Thanks for sharing your arsenal and bringing it every single day! In HEART, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, INTEGRITY AND INNOVATION. XO, Mel
Welcome, Grace! Hello everyone! I am so excited to be a part of Spectrum! I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and went to Ball State University in Muncie, IN.
