Making Movies that Matter 4th Annual Council District 12 Short Film Festival Artist-in-Residence Program Syllabus and Curriculum The curriculum for each class will utilize project based learning (PBL) strategies that align with Common Core State Standards and the Visual and Performing Arts standards approved by the state of California, as well as the interests, skills and goals of participants in the class. The program will culminate with a public exhibition for participants’ families and friends, which documents students’ work and helps them complete the creative process. Artists-in-Residence will lead class at participating schools at least once per week and will meet with teacher(s) at each school on occasion to plan out the curriculum. Teachers participating in the MMTM Program are asked to work with their assigned Artist-in- Residence on a weekly basis to help plan and implement the curriculum. During the rest of week, when the Artist-in-Residence is not in attendance, teachers are encouraged to continue working with their students on the filmmaking process. Teachers are also highly encouraged to attend training workshops at Apple. All dates and times are tentative. Week Dates Classroom Activities 1 Monday, Location: School Classroom February 7, 2022 - Friday, Class Activities: Introduce the class. Review timeline and February 11, goals of the workshop and stress the importance of deadlines. 2022 Discuss genres*, and find out how each student wants to be a part of the creative process. Discuss what film topics interest students and what “matters” to them. Begin dialoguing about their ideas and start brainstorming about film content that emphasizes their voices. Genres: Genre determines goals and deadlines (e.g. a short documentary movie requires more shooting and editing time compared to a narrative short) ● Narrative/fiction or narrative/non-fiction (i.e. instructional/DIY video or landscape movie) ● Documentary ● Hybrid format ● Animation Goals: Students will develop an understanding of the purpose and context of what they will be doing through the semester. Students will understand how they will be working in groups to make short films. Students will determine responsibilities for
each member and their production groups. Students will begin determining what “matters” to them and the subject matter for their films. 2 Monday, Location: School Classroom February 14, 2022 - Friday, Class Activities: Review basics of outlining/writing a script February 18, and the pre-production process. Discuss how to pitch film 2022 ideas and develop a proposal. Goals: Students will successfully conceive and pitch their ideas to the class. 3 Monday, Location: School Classroom February 21, 2022 - Friday, Class Activities: Help students pitch ideas to the class. February 25, Continue reviewing basics of pre-production and crafting a 2022 solid outline/ script. Students will learn about crew roles. Goals: Students will receive feedback on their ideas from classmates and instructors. Students will determine project feasibility. 4 Monday, Location: School Classroom February 28, 2022 - Friday, Class Activities: Review scripts/outlines. (If documentary March 4, 2022 form is chosen a treatment can be substituted for an outline/script.) Work on scripts throughout class. Goals: Students will submit draft of script/outline. Students will finalize their scripts, treatments or outlines over the next week in order to begin Production the week of March 28, 2016. 5 Monday, March Location: School Classroom 7, 2022 - Friday, March 11, 2022 Class Activities: Begin Production. Discuss logistics of shooting and next steps. Review cinematography, lighting, staging, directing actors, working with a crew, shooting, etc. (Customize lessons once projects are determined). Goals: Students will complete at least ⅓ of the production work needed.
6 Monday, March Location: School Classroom 14, 2022 - Friday, March Class Activities: Continue Production. Review footage and 18, 2022 plan for pick-ups during Week 7. Goals: Students will understand what pick-ups they need to have and an idea of how to finish the final shots for their films. 7 Monday, March Location: School Classroom 21, 2022 - Friday, March Class Activities: Wrap up Production. 25, 2022 Goals: Students will finish shooting all video material. 8 Monday, March Location: School Classroom 28, 2022 - Friday, April 1, Class Activities: Begin post-production. Demonstrate how to 2022 use editing software and show examples of editing strategies. Assist students in experimenting with the editing software for both video and sound recording. Goals: Students will understand how to put together a rough cut on their own and be prepared to present the rough cut at the next class. 9 Monday, April 4, Location: School Classroom 2022 - Friday, April 8, 2022 Class Activities: Watch rough cuts and lead student critique and feedback session. Goals: Students will learn how to give feedback to one another and how to make decisions in completing their films. 10 Monday, April Spring Break - pause in meetings, but students may work 11, 2022 - independently on their projects. Friday, April 15, 2022 11 Monday, April Location: School Classroom 18, 2022 - Friday, April 22, Class Activities: Assist students in finalizing their films and 2022 managing their media files using exporting, etc. Goals: Students will learn how to manage media files. Students will submit completed films to instructors by the end of class.
12 Monday, April Location: Schools 25, 2022 - Friday, April 29, Individual Culmination Film Screenings & Film Festival 2022 Entry Selection: Each school hosts screenings of student films. Students vote on which films will go to the festival. Making Movies that Matter 4th Annual Council District 12 Short Film Festival Artist-in-Residence Program Artist in Residence Job Description Essential Job Functions (including but not limited to): ● In consultation with the ‘Making Movies that Matter’ Festival Program Coordinator, designing an engaging, innovative and instructive curriculum appropriate for elementary, middle, or high school students. Developing and articulating lesson plans, curriculum and syllabi for the classes to aid students in creating original short films using iPhones and mobile devices. ● Attending and teaching all classes for the designated times/dates. ● Working with the school to distribute and collect participant risk and liability waiver forms and other release forms needed. ● Creating and maintaining a safe, collaborative, and respectful environment for youth participants to work in. ● Abiding by the rules, regulations, policies and directives of CD-12 as they now exist or as may be adopted during the appointment period. ● Checking in with the Festival Program Coordinator on a bi-weekly basis to communicate progress, concerns and any other information about the wellbeing of the youth participants. ● Planning and coordinating the culmination events for the schools (film screening). Submitting all materials needed for the culmination events well in advance of the event. Attending the culmination event and representing the class to the public. ● Building relationships of mutual trust and respect, and working collaboratively with the youth participants and their parents, and partner staff. Making Movies that Matter 4th Annual Council District 12 Short Film Festival Artist-in-Residence Program Film Festival Guidelines Submission Deadline: ● Thursday, May 12, 2022 by 11:59 PM Special Note: Submissions may be uploaded starting Monday, May 2, 2022. Submissions uploaded to: https://mmtmfilmfestival.submittable.com/submit Special Note: The “Making Movies that Matter” 3rd Annual Council District 12 Short Film Festival Artist-in-Residence Program is not responsible for the streaming quality of the submitted file. Eligibility Requirements: ● Film submissions may be no longer than 3 minutes in length. ● Films must be shot on a mobile device (iPhone or iPad) and may be edited using any software (or the uploader must select *Advanced* category). ● Films must be submitted as Quicktime files (i.e. .mov files) ● A one sentence synopsis/logline of the film must be included. ● Films must be created between February - May 2022 to be considered. ● Filmmakers must be youth of elementary, middle school, high school or from New Horizons. Submission Categories: ● Documentary ● Fictional Short ● Public Service Announcement ● Animated Short Labeling: The file must be labeled as: [FILM TITLE]_[SCHOOL NAME].mov All submissions must be submitted online and labeled in the following manner: ● Identify the age group of the filmmaker(s): ○ Elementary ○ Middle School ○ High School ○ 18+
● Include the contact information for the school and/or each member of the team, including, but not limited to: physical address, phone number and email address. ● Include the name of the Artist-in-Residence who advised or supervised the project, when applicable. Festival Awards: Awards will be made in the following categories by age group: ● Outstanding Documentary ● Outstanding Fictional Short ● Outstanding Public Service Announcement ● Outstanding Animated Short ● Overall ES, MS and HS Winner ● John Lee Best of Show Award Films that are world premiering at the Festival are eligible for the Festival’s multiple competitive categories. Winners will be chosen by a special jury. General Requirements: Shorts exhibited previously, either theatrically, at another local festival or via television or Internet broadcast are not eligible to apply. Rough cuts or works-in-progress are accepted and reviewed. However, filmmakers are urged to submit as close to the final cut as possible.
