THE SPIRIT St Martins Lutheran College Newsletter Term 2 Week 4 2021 MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL Small acts of kindness can have a big effect If for some reason you haven’t caught up with it, our theme for this year is: Have Courage. Rise Up! It’s a great theme and one that can inspire and motivate us to action whoever we are because it applies to so many situations. But often when we hear a phrase like this, our minds immediately turn to the big things in our world that we feel we need to rise up against and overcome - bullying, inequality, poverty, environmental issues, pandemics and the like. Even the Bible verses we use to support our themes often come from stories that describe ordinary people who have trusted God’s plan and overcome insurmountable odds and changed the world or the course of history. Let’s face it, who doesn’t love an underdog story with a battle where good defeats evil and there’s a happily ever after? The catch is that most of us feel powerless when faced with such enormous obstacles and the pressure to make such a big difference. So much so that it demotivates and overwhelms… How am I expected to make a difference and change the world when some days it’s all I can do to get out of bed on time? It’s a challenge for us all. Recently, we were putting up posters around the College with pictures of our House Captains promoting positive messages that help us live out our theme and our values. One that caught my attention said: In a world where you can be anything - be kind! It resonated with me because this is something that is possible for all of us and could make a big difference in the lives of others. I’m not saying to forget about the big issues, but while you’re planning that world-changing solution don’t put aside the random acts of kindness that will change the world right here and right now. You may never know how much that smile, encouraging word or simple “Thank you” impacted someone’s life and caused a flow-on effect for the rest of the day. Letting someone go before you in the line, waving to the neighbour in your street, stopping to chat with a work colleague rather than rushing off may be all they needed to restore their faith in people in a world that is becoming increasingly self-centred. I know it brightens my day when people wave to me on traffic duty, or a Foundation student stops to tell me they like my shoes or brings me a picture they have drawn to decorate my office. In the same way, the smile on their face when I remember their name, recognise they’ve had a haircut or I’ve stopped to tie their shoelaces, makes the effort more than worthwhile and carries me through my day as well. So, today and everyday, I hope you find the courage to rise up, be kind and change the world one smile at a time. “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone...” Galatians 6:9-10 ESV Philip Bond Head of Junior School (Acting)

A few weeks ago, the College’s Year 9/10 Photography class went on an excursion to Royal Copenhagen Ice Creamery as part of their study of Food Photography. The students were encouraged to purchase food and/or beverages and to photograph these from a range of angles. They were also encouraged to take photos of other dishes at their tables to broaden their portfolios. Copenhagen didn’t disappoint; their desserts, meals and beverages were very well presented, as anticipated. The students enjoyed this experience with the added bonus of getting to eat such amazing food at the end. Thank you to the team at Copenhagen for catering for us as a group. The students had a great time and have taken some amazing photos.
