1 Sixth Form Bulletin 09/10/20 Careers BOTH YEARS The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health are hosting an online careers fair on Saturday 17 October 2020. The event will feature a mixed panel selected from a wide range of roles across environmental health roles, including recent graduates, to help explain the different routes into the profession. Students will be able to interact with the panel and ask questions about university courses, a typical day in their job, what they love about their role, and why they chose environmental health. For more information, see https://www.bigmarker.com/cieh/careers-fair BOTH YEARS The Army have set up a Virtual Careers Centre for any students looking for information about joining the Army, or the many varied careers that are available – combat, logistics and support, engineering, communications and intelligence, music, and many more! There is also a dedicated section to discuss the different routes into the Army, from university to apprenticeships. There are several upcoming live webinars available for both students and parents/carers. For more information, see https://apply.army.mod.uk/how-to-join/joining- process/virtual-acc BOTH YEARS InvestIN Education runs a Young Lawyer Programme and a Young Political Leader Programme, this year held online. The two-day events provide an intensive introduction to each career and include activities such as: • Young Lawyer Programme (17 – 18 October 2020) a live murder trial where students can cross-examine witnesses, a high-profile human rights case about the deportation of a terrorist, a multi-million-pound celebrity divorce case involving the custody of children, and corporate legal advice to a multi-billion-dollar tech company that wants to expand abroad. • Young Political Leader Programme (14 – 15 November 2020) thinking like a UN Ambassador in a ‘Model UN’ General Assembly meeting, debating with former MPs in a simulated House of Commons debate, representing your constituency in a simulated Parliamentary Question Time, and acting as a UK diplomat advising the head of the Foreign Office. Both programmes also feature career coaching, an audience with experienced figures from the world of law/politics, and access to further support. Note that there is a cost for both programmes. 2 BOTH YEARS Medical Projects are running an online work experience course called ‘GP Live’ on various dates between October 2020 and February 2021. GP Live gives students the chance to host their own GP surgery under the guidance of mentors, taking actual patient histories, form diagnoses, order tests and scans and suggest treatment plans. After each case there will be a full breakdown of the medical side as well as looking at communication and the role of a doctor. Note that there is a cost for the course. For more information, see https://educationprojects.co.uk/medical-projects/gp-live/ University/College YEAR 13 Reminder UK University and Apprenticeship Search are running a virtual event on Wednesday 7 October 2020 for students looking to attend a Russell Group university. The event will feature all 24 Russell Group universities, and students will be able to chat directly to university representatives, download documents and take part in 12 live webinars. To register for a place, see https://russellgroup.vfairs.com/ BOTH YEARS The University of Manchester is running Manchester Live webinars for any students thinking of applying to the university. During the webinars, students will be able to hear from university staff and current students about all things relating to Manchester and studying at university. Topics covered include choosing what and where to study, study skills, student finance, and student life. There are also several subject-specific talks available as well. Some webinars are held live but there are also recordings to watch of previous sessions. For more information, see https://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/manchester-live/ Enrichment BOTH YEARS The British Medical Association are hosting a webinar called ‘Making it in medicine: insights into studying and working in the medical field’ on Friday 16 October 2020 (10am – 11.30am). The event will feature three speakers: a current medical student, a recently qualified doctor, and a practicing doctor. The speakers will discuss their personal experiences of studying/working in medicine and share insights on becoming a doctor. There will not be a live Q&A but panellists will answer pre-submitted questions – if students have any questions they can send them to CSER@bma.org.uk by Tuesday 6 October 2020.
3 BOTH YEARS The University of Sunderland is running a Social Sciences Discovery Day on Wednesday 21 October 2020. The online event will showcase the social sciences subjects available at Sunderland: Childhood Studies, Criminology, Health and Social Care, Sociology, and introducing the new BSc Professional Policing programme. The event will feature interactive taster sessions run by the University’s academic staff. For more information and to book, see https://www.sunderland.ac.uk/events/event/social-sciences-discovery-day-1022 BOTH YEARS NUSTEM, who host workshops, events and courses to showcase careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), run a series of public lectures. The lectures are held online (this year) on selected Thursday evenings in October and November between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. Each lecture is focused on a different topic and aims to show how physics, maths, engineering and geography matter and where they can lead. 4 YEAR 13 King’s College are also running two Application Support Q&A sessions on Zoom ahead of the 15 October deadline for students who are planning to make an application to Cambridge. The sessions are designed to be very general so are suitable for any applicant to Cambridge regardless of the college they wish to apply to. For more information, see the links below. • Application Support Q&A: Thursday 8 October (4pm – 5pm) YEAR 12 Sutton Trust are accepting applications to their Pathways to Medicine programme. The programme was designed to widen access to the medical profession and enables students to decide whether medicine is the right path for them, while building knowledge and skills relevant for higher education and the world of work. The 2020-2022 Pathway will initially take place virtually until face- to-face sessions can be delivered safely; Newcastle University are one of the four institutions delivering the programme. Please note that there are eligibility criteria including academic achievement, first generation to go to university, and eligibility for free school meals. Dr Chris Brignell, Director of Natural Sciences at the University of Nottingham, will explore the role of different scientific disciplines in developing medical imaging while also introducing students to the interdisciplinary study of Natural Sciences. 5 BOTH YEARS Newcastle University is now accepting bookings for their Mini Medical School; a series of lectures (this year held online) offering an in-depth look at a range of medical topics, including current research developments at the University. Previous programmes covered topics such as dermatology, emergency medicine, medical scanning technology, anaesthetics, and sport and exercise science. The online lectures will take place 6pm – 7pm on Thursday 12, Thursday 19, Thursday 26 November and Thursday 3 December 2020. 6 Applications for the 2020/21 K+ programme are now open at King’s College London, and you may be eligible to apply at www.kplus.london, before the deadline on Saturday 24th of October. More information about the programme can be found below, but it is important to note that our academic entry requirements have changed last year, so some students who in previous years would not have been eligible to apply will be so this year. K+ is a 2 year programme of events for Year 12 students from underrepresented backgrounds designed to empower them and equip them with the skills, resources and experience to access research-intensive universities. Students apply for a place on one of eight ‘subject streams’ and the programme includes: • This year we are adding a brand-new subject stream to the programmes: Business & Economics. This will join the original seven subject streams: Healthcare, Dentistry, Law, History & Politics, Language & Literature, Maths & Computer Science, the Sciences. • A range of academic sessions to develop their subject knowledge • University and A Level study skills sessions • A week-long non-residential summer school in Summer 2020 Along with a range of other events. Due to COVID-19, events will be held virtually, we hope to transition to in-person events, but this action will be directed by government guidelines. We have successfully help virtual events so we assure you that you the full K+ experience will not be lost! Completion of the full programme, including the writing of an academic assignment graded by a King’s College London PhD student provides a range of benefits including: • Excellent experience of the subject they are interested in studying • Entitling students to a reduced offer of up to 2 grades lower to study at KCL, for courses other than Medicine and Dentistry • Eligibility for a K+ start up bursary of up to £1000 in their first year, for students who go on to enrol at King’s To be eligible, students must: • Be beginning Year 12 in September 2019; and • Study at a non-selective state school in a Greater London borough; and • Have achieved a minimum of 8 GCSE’s grade 4-9 (including English and Maths), including 5 GCSE’s at grades 6-9 (please note Healthcare and Dentistry applicants should have a minimum 5 grades at 7-9). We also aim to prioritise applications from students across a range of discrete groups, including Disabled students, Care experienced students, Black Caribbean students, Young carers and Gypsy, Roma or Traveller students, even those who do not fully meet our GCSE requirements
7 Career Days – Immersive virtual career days and work experience opportunities Career Days are offering virtual career days and work experience opportunities for all students interested in a career in aviation, psychology, business, medicine, law and veterinary sciences. Access Aspirations – Year 12 sign-up portal now open: Access Aspirations is a Mayor’s Fund for London programme aiming to provide skills, work experience and networks to support new routes into university and employment for young people. Access Aspirations have been incredibly impactful creating more visible employment pathways for 16-18 year olds, with over 4,300 employer encounters, 260 work experience placements, 570 busines insight opportunities and 3,500 encounters in schools.
