What kind of person do I want to be? Then, what should I do?
Chaotic thunder and lightning,
blackouts, power shortage, and rotting with
an unbearable stench inside…. I am not
talking about the turbulent weather pattern
and its devastating effects, but about the
turmoil in moral thinking of many people
today.
Most moral catastrophes in the world are
orchestrated by people doing their own thing
while enlisting God for the cause. Many
religious extremists do that often. Although
God indeed wills our happiness, that will is
not necessarily manifest in the fierceness of
our wants and needs.
Today we live in a culture where morality is unwittingly perceived as a private matter, that is, a
personal choice, as if my own feelings and needs have an innate right to override everything else,
including common good and traditional common values, even the teachings of Christ. It is true that
our moral choice and behavior is intensely personal, precisely because it must come from the inner
core of our being, where God speaks to us. It is thus true that what we do always affects our
relationship with God and others. Of the Ten Commandments, the first three deal with our
relationship with God and the rest deal with our relationship with others. Our behavior reflects our
inner thinking.
The vices that Jesus enumerates roughly correlate the latter seven commandments: “unchastity,
theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.”
All these evils come from within and they defile" (Mark 7:21-23).
Catholic understanding of the human person gives human freedom a decisive role in responding to
the divine offer of redemption. This calls Catholics to collaborate with God, so to speak, in healing
hearts, establishing justice, making peace—and thereby ushering in the kingdom of God.
Contrary to the perception of many, Catholicism is not a religion of complex and obscure dos and
don’ts. For Moses, the commandments are not arbitrary rules of a capricious God, but a reflection
of God’s wisdom. The ritual of Passover is about the freedom of God’s people. Certainly,
Catholicism is not about legalism which is strict conformity to the letter of the law rather than its
spirit. Rather, our Catholic way of life is about the cultivation of virtues that nurture the best
version of ourselves. So, our question is to be: What kind of person do I want to be? Then, what
should I do?
Socrates’ counsel is often quoted in various moral and spiritual writings: “An unexamined life is not
worth living.” But the reality is that, even if we can examine all we want, but that does not add up
to our salvation. What saints are solely preoccupied with is a life led by the Holy Spirit, that is, an
uninspired life. Despite historical conditioning, human weaknesses and idiosyncrasies, tenacious
following of the Spirit characterizes the lives of the saints.
As we celebrate the Eucharist, we are reminded of who we are, namely, the people of God and the
Body of Christ. May our daily life and our moral decisions reflect who we are!

¿Qué clase de persona quiero ser? Entonces, ¿qué debo hacer?
Truenos y relámpagos caóticos, apagones, escasez
de energía y pudriéndose con una pestilencia
insoportable en el interior…. No me refiero al
patrón de clima turbulento y sus efectos
devastadores, sino a la confusión en el
pensamiento moral de muchas personas en la
actualidad.
La mayoría de las catástrofes morales en el
mundo son dirigidas por personas que hacen lo
suyo mientras reclutan a Dios para la causa.
Muchos extremistas religiosos lo hacen con
frecuencia. Aunque Dios realmente quiere nuestra
felicidad, esa voluntad no se manifiesta
necesariamente en la ferocidad de nuestras
necesidades.
Hoy vivimos en una cultura en la que la moralidad se percibe inconscientemente como un asunto privado,
es decir, una elección personal, como si mis propios sentimientos y necesidades tuvieran un derecho innato a
anular todo lo demás, incluido el bien común y los valores comunes tradicionales, incluso las enseñanzas de
Cristo. Es cierto que nuestra elección moral y nuestro comportamiento es poderosamente personal,
precisamente porque debe provenir del núcleo interno de nuestro ser, donde Dios nos habla. Por lo tanto, es
cierto que lo que hacemos siempre afecta nuestra relación con Dios y con los demás. De los Diez
Mandamientos, los primeros tres tratan de nuestra relación con Dios y el resto tratan de nuestra relación con
los demás. Nuestro comportamiento refleja nuestro pensamiento interno.
Los extravíos que Jesús enumera tienen una correlación aproximada con los últimos siete mandamientos:
“falta de castidad, robo, asesinato, adulterio, codicia, malicia, engaño, libertinaje, envidia, blasfemia,
arrogancia, necedad”. Todos estos males vienen de dentro y contaminan” (Marcos 7: 21-23).
La comprensión Católica de la persona humana otorga a la libertad humana un papel decisivo en la
respuesta al ofrecimiento divino de redención. Esto llama a los católicos a colaborar con Dios, por así
decirlo, para sanar corazones, establecer la justicia, hacer la paz y, por lo tanto, marcar el comienzo del reino
de Dios.
Contrariamente a la percepción de muchos, el Catolicismo no es una religión de complejos y impenetrables
pros y contras. Para Moisés, los mandamientos no son reglas arbitrarias de un Dios caprichoso, sino un
reflejo de la sabiduría de Dios. El ritual de la Pascua se trata de la libertad del pueblo de Dios. Ciertamente,
el Catolicismo no se trata de legalismo, que es una estricta conformidad con la letra de la ley más que con su
espíritu. Más bien, nuestro estilo de vida Católica se trata del cultivo de virtudes que nutren la mejor versión
de nosotros mismos. Entonces, nuestra pregunta es: ¿Qué tipo de persona quiero ser? ¿Entonces, qué debo
hacer?
El consejo de Sócrates se cita con frecuencia en varios escritos morales y espirituales: "No vale la pena vivir
una vida sin examinar". Pero la realidad es que, incluso si podemos examinar todo lo que queramos, eso no
se suma a nuestra salvación. Lo único que preocupa a los santos es una vida guiada por el Espíritu Santo, es
decir, una vida de inspiración. A pesar de los condicionamientos históricos, las debilidades naturales
humanas, el seguimiento indomable del Espíritu caracteriza la vida de los santos.
Al celebrar la Eucaristía, recordamos quiénes somos, es decir, el pueblo de Dios y el Cuerpo de Cristo. ¡Que
nuestra vida diaria y nuestras decisiones morales reflejen quiénes somos!
