Scholarships Exclusive to Charles Spencer Students Application dates may change throughout the school year. Stay alert for announcements within the school! Canfor Forest Products Scholarship Value: $500 Number: Four Criteria: Must be pursuing post-secondary education in Alberta or British Columbia Plan on studying in forestry, wood products manufacturing, forestry related engineering programs as well as trades in millwright, electrician, power engineer, instrument technician weld, machinist and heavy duty mechanic. ** Children of employees of Canfor-Grande Prairie Division (Grande Prairie & Area) will receive preferential consideration. Apply: If you’d like to be considered for one of these scholarships, please see your guidance counsellor in Student Services two weeks prior to the deadline Deadline: May 1 Chris Gonnet Memorial Scholarship Value: $500 Number: One Criteria: Demonstrates leadership qualities. Pursuing post-secondary education. Demonstrates a positive influence on the student community. Made a significant contribution to the community in which they live. Apply: Application is NOT necessary. Recipient will be chosen by the school’s administration and staff members Deadline: May 30 Croken Memorial Scholarship Value: $500 Number: One Criteria: Based solely on academic achievement. The scholarship will be awarded to the grade 12 student with the highest average (among applicants) based on the five highest Alberta Diploma Examination marks. The average is calculated using the Government exam marks only, not the combined average marks of the school based and diploma exam mark. Apply: Application in NOT necessary. Grande Prairie Public School District Education Foundation CTS Scholarship Program Value: $1000 Number: Two Criteria: These CTS scholarships are for graduating students who have completed the most advanced course offered at Charles Spencer High School in each of the following: Welding/Fabrication Technology, Construction Technology, Fashion Design, Auto Technology, Design Studies, Cosmetology Studies, Foods, Electronics Technology and Communications Technology. Students also must intend to pursue post-secondary studies or a recognized apprenticeship program in the same field of study, within two years of completing high school Apply: Application forms are available at Student Services Deadline: May 15 Grande Prairie Rotary Club Scholarship Value: $2000 Number: Five Criteria: Service to school and community; person of character; academic achievement; leadership qualities; registered in post- secondary program. Student must demonstrate characteristics of a Rotarian: service, fellowship, diversity, integrity and leadership. Here is a breakdown of how the awards will be distributed amongst those who meet the above criteria: 1 award to a student attending full time at GPRC 2 awards to two students attending full time at any post-secondary institution 1 award to a student attending full time at a technical school 1 award to a student attending full time in fine arts Apply: Application forms are available at Student Services Deadline: May 4 **Application forms must be handed in at Student Services Premiere’s Citizenship Award Value: Plaque & letter of commendation Number: One Criteria: Must be graduating from high school in the current academic year and have displayed outstanding characteristics in citizenship, leadership, engagement (school and community) ** Only 1 student will be nominated by the school. Government of Alberta Scholarship, Award & Bursary Program for High School Students Some website addresses and application dates may have changed so persevere in your search. Alberta “AAA” Midget Hockey League Scholarship Value: $2000 Number: Eighteen Criteria: Must be currently registered with an AMHL member team or a player who is no longer eligible to play midget hockey but has participated for a minimum of 2 years in the AMHL Must demonstrate leadership qualities, hockey ability and sportsmanship as well as financial need and good academic standing Apply: Application forms are available at Student Services Deadline: Last regular scheduled league game of the current hockey season Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship Value: Up to $2500 each Number: Available to all Alberta students. Criteria: Based on academic achievement in Grades 10 and/or 11 and/or 12 for post-secondary study at colleges, technical schools or universities. Overall average of 75% or higher in 5 subjects, including English. Apply in Grade 12 year for all three grades. Apply: Students can start applying online towards the end of June or beginning of July at studentaid.alberta.ca/scholarships/alberta-scholarships/alexander-rutherford-scholarship/ Anna & John Kolesar Memorial Scholarship Value: $1500 Number: One Criteria: Pursuing full-time study in a Faculty of Education. Alberta Residents from a family where neither parent has received a university degree. Awarded to the student with the highest academic average in three designated grade 12 subjects. Dr. Ernest and Minnie Mehl Scholarship Value: $3500 Number: One Criteria: Grade 12 student attending post-secondary in Canada. Selection is based on same criteria as for the Rutherford Scholars Apply: Recipients are selected from applications received for an Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. A separate application is NOT required More info is available online at studentaid.alberta.ca/scholarships/alberta-scholarships John Hasselfield Endowment Foundation Value: $400 Number: Unknown Criteria: Must be presently enrolled in an Alberta Public School and be a Canadian citizen residing in Canada or permanent resident of Canada Apply: Application forms are available at Student Services or online at www.johnhasselfield.com Other: Students must write an essay (approx. 500 words) outlining how and when the funds will be used, how they will contribute financially to their academic goals and what obstacles are impeding achievement of their goals. Deadline: March 1 Keyera Energy Peter J. Renton Memorial Scholarship Value: $3000 Number: Two Criteria: Plan to enroll full-time in an Alberta post-secondary institution in the first or second year of a degree or diploma program in a field of study supporting the oil and gas industry, including but not limited to business, communications, sciences, engineering, technical programs, information technology, etc.). Must be an Alberta resident. Metis and Non-Status Indian Social Services Bursary Program Value: $4,696 - $20,730 / year Number: Varies Criteria: Must be either Metis or Non-Status Indian; demonstrate financial need; be an Alberta resident; show an investment in and a commitment to Indigenous communities in Alberta. Student must be enrolled in a post-secondary social services program like Social Work, Psychology, Psychoeducation, Sociology, Education, Child and Youth Care, Human Ecology, Anthropology, Counselling, Community Rehabilitation, Criminology, Addictions and Mental Heath Services Apply: Apply online at www.alberta.ca/metis-and-non-status-indian-bursary-program.aspx To connect with the Metis and Non-Status Indian Bursary Program office, email css.csmetisbursary@gov.ab.ca Deadline: April 30 Northern Alberta Development Council Bursaries Value: $1000 - $24,000 Number: Varies Criteria: Residents of Alberta (3 year minimum); enrolled in full-time post-secondary academic pursuits which will prepare you for an occupation that has high employment potential in Northern Alberta; be enrolled in the latter stage of your education; must sign an agreement to live and work one year in northern Alberta for each year of bursary support. Two years return service in some cases. Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) Scholarships Value: $1000 Number 500 Criteria: Be registered as an Alberta apprentice in a trade while sill attending high school, have completed a minimum of 250 hours of on-the-job training related to your trade and are continuing in an approved regular apprenticeship program. Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic merit, a recommendation from an employer, a recommendation from a teacher and a personal essay. Apply: tradesecrets.alberta.ca/financial-assistance/scholarships Deadline: June Tiessen Foundation Broadcast Scholarship Value: $750 Number One Criteria: Plan to enroll in a full-time Canadian post-secondary institution that offers degree or diploma programs in broadcasting such as TV, radio, broadcast engineering. Must be an Alberta resident. Aboriginal Business Leadership Awards Value: $2000 Number: Thirteen Criteria: For Aboriginal students working towards a certificate, diploma, or degree in business/commerce, in any public post-secondary institution in Alberta. Priority will be given to self-employed Aboriginal students attending post-secondary for the first time. Volunteerism, leadership, academic achievement and financial need may be considered. Apply: Application forms are available online at www.macewan.ca/scholarships or at Student Services Grant MacEwan Community College Foundation (780-497-5063) Deadline: June 15 Aboriginal Educational Awards Program – AMOCO Canada Value: $2000 renewable up to four years Number: Up to six Criteria: Enrolled full time in undergraduate, college or technical program at a recognized post- secondary institution in Canada. Al Larson Memorial Scholarship Value: $2500 Number: Two Criteria: Child or grand-children of a member of the Alberta Real Estate Association who will be entering his or her first year of post-secondary studies Above average scholastic performance and good citizenship/community involvement Accomplishments in a broad range of activities in high school years that extend further than academics (ex: fine arts, athletics, charitable work, volunteer, etc.) Apply: Application forms are available online at albertarealtor.ca/page/scholarships or call 1-800-661-0231 Deadline: October 31 Alberta Blue Cross Scholarship for Indigenous Students Value: Varies (up to $1500 depending on the institution) Number: Three Criteria: Awarded to Indigenous students completing high school and planning on enrolling in first year of any full-time post-secondary studies in Alberta. Applicant must be Indian, Inuit or Metis and must have been resident of Alberta during their previous year of study. Recipients are chosen based on academic achievement, financial need and community involvement. Students will be ineligible if receiving more than $3500 in other scholarships or bursaries for the current academic year. Alberta Teachers’ Association – Local #42 Value: $2000 Number: Two Criteria: One scholarship to be awarded to a son or daughter of a certified teacher from Grande Prairie and District Catholic ATA Local #42 who is entering full time studies at an accredited post-secondary institution. Second scholarship awarded to a student enrolling in full time study in the Faculty of Education at an accredited university or college. Students must demonstrate adequate academic achievement and be active in extra- curricular, community and/or church/school activities Apply: Application forms are available at Student Services Deadline: September 30 Alberta Teachers’ Association Trumpeter Local #26 Value: $1000 Number: Three Criteria: Children of Trumpeter Local #26 members entering post-secondary education. Deadline: October 15 Alberta Union of Provincial Employees Educational Grants Value: Varies Number: Varies Criteria: Current or retired members of A.U.P.E., their dependents who are attending a post- secondary institution in the province. Alliance Pipeline Aboriginal Student Award Value: Up to $2000 per year of study Number: Varies Criteria: Active members of an Aboriginal community (band or settlement) who are residents of Alberta, British Columbia or Saskatchewan; enrolled in post-secondary program of studies. Preference will be given to applicants whose chosen studies will prepare them for employment in the oil and gas industry (engineering, instrumentation, geological sciences, environmental sciences, business administration, etc.) Apply: Application forms are available at Student Services or online at www.alliancepipeline.com/Community/AboriginalRelations/Pages/ASA.aspx Deadline: July 1 Altalink Indigenous Student Award Value: $1000 Number: Four students from each Treaty (6, 7 & 8) and Metis community in Alberta Criteria: Must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution. Treaty students must be born in Alberta. Metis students must either be a member of the Metis Nation of Alberta Association or an Alberta Metis Settlement. APEGA High School Awards (Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta) Value: $5000 Number: Five Criteria: Pursuing post-secondary studies in Engineering or GeoScience at any Canadian post-secondary institution. Primarily based on financial need and non-academic accomplishments. Participation in extracurricular activities is an asset. Apply: apegafoundation.ca/ Deadline: July 31 Arthur Paulin Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship Value: $1000 Number: Five or more Criteria: Must be enrolled in an automotive aftermarket industry related program at a Canadian college or University. This includes students pursuing their studies as an automotive apprentice. It also includes studies in the following automotive sectors: auto body, hard parts, heavy duty, motive power (machinists). Apply: Application forms are available at Student Services or online at www.aiacanada.com Deadline: November 30 Bayer Fund Opportunity Scholarship Value: $1500 Number: Several Criteria: Must be planning to enroll at a Canadian post-secondary institution (degree or diploma) in a first year agriculture, food science or culinary program. The scholarship is also based on academics and leadership in the community. **Students must write a 300-500 word essay by answering the following question: Canadian farmers play an important role in feeding the world in a sustainable way; what role will you play? Belcourt Brosseau Metis Awards Value: $2000 to $10,000 Number: One hundred forty Criteria: Must be a Metis who resides in Alberta and who intends to pursue a program of post- secondary study in Alberta. C.A MacLean Bursary Foundation Summer Internship Program Value: Internship Number: Six Criteria: Alberta or NWT high school student who plans to pursue journalism studies Apply: Application forms are available online at www.awna.com/camaclean or at Student Services Deadline: January 31 Canadian Hospitality Foundation Scholarships Value: $3,000 (college entrance scholarship) $3,500 (university entrance scholarship) Number: Varies Criteria: Students must be enrolled in a university degree program or a minimum two-year college diploma program in Canada in the following areas of study: hospitality, hotel, tourism, food & beverages, culinary, etc. Apply: Application forms are available at the college or university’s awards office. Children’s Ability Fund Bursary Value: Up to $5000 Number: Varies each year Criteria: Person with a disability who resides in Northern Alberta. Going into first year of college, technical institute or university. The bursary may also be awarded to a student who has contributed a great deal to the community of persons with disability. ConocoPhillips Aboriginal Awards Value: Up to $3,000 (can be renewed but must apply each year) Number: Several Criteria: Student must be of Aboriginal ancestry, enrolled in a full-time program at an accredited Canadian institution and demonstrate promising academic qualifications and leadership skills. Financial need is also considered. Apply: conocophillips.ca Deadline: June 30 ConocoPhillips Trades Bursary Program Value: Up to $2,500 Number: Ten Criteria: Student must have graduated from a high school located in an area where ConocoPhillips operates. Must be pursuing his or her studies in a trades program in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan or the Northwest Territories. Preference will be given to students pursuing programs related to the oil and gas industry. Apply: conocophillips.ca Deadline: June 30 Delta Upsilon International Fraternity Scholarships Value: Up to $1000 Number: One Criteria: Male student who exhibits strengths in academics as well as extracurricular involvement. Must be planning to attend University of Alberta Apply: www.dualberta.ca/scholarships Deadline: August 31 Destination Imagination Scholarship Value: $500 Number: 60 Criteria: Grade 12 student who is planning to pursue his or her studies at a post-secondary institution. The applicant should have already participated in Destination Imagination as a team member or as a volunteer and should be actively continuing his or her involvement in Destination Imagination in some capacity. Dr. Ed O’Connor Scholarships Value: $5,000 Number: 15 Criteria: Alberta students who have met the entrance requirements and are enrolled at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. Based on financial need, academic achievement, citizenship qualities and athletic accomplishment. Apply: Application forms are available through STFX University or through the Dr. Ed O’Connor Scholarship Society Deadline: March 1 EF Global Citizen Scholarship Value: $1,000 toward tuition and an all-expense paid trip to attend a global leadership conference Number: Two Criteria: High school senior headed to post-secondary school. Student who strives to be a strong Global Citizen in his or her daily life and demonstrates commitment to tackling global Issues. First Nations, Metis and Inuit NADC Bursary Value: $6,000 per year (apprenticeship or college program) $10,000 per year (university degree; bachelor, master or PhD) Number: Varies Criteria: First Nations status or non-status, Metis or Inuit; over the age of 18; Alberta resident for 12 consecutive months before the start of the student’s program; enrolled in full-time post-secondary program in a school designated for provincial funding; program of study must be a minimum of 12 weeks in length; student must not be in default of a provincial student loan Apply: Applications forms are available at Student Services or online at nadc.ca/our-bursaries/first-nation-metis-and-inuit-bursary/ Deadline: June 1 Grande Prairie & District Oldtimers’ Association Scholarship Value: Varies each year Number: One (may be divided if more than 1 selected) Criteria: Be a member of the Grande Prairie and District Oldtimers’ Association. Be a resident of the City of Grande Prairie, the County of Grande Prairie, the Municipal District of Greenview #16, or the Municipal District of Spirit River #133. Have completed Grade 12 in an educational institution in one of the areas designated above. Box 21028 Grande Prairie AB T8V 6W7 Deadline: September 15 Grande Prairie Chapter - Canadian Parents for French Scholarship Value: $500 Number: One Criteria: Must be a grade 12 student enrolled in a regional high school offering a French Second Language program. Must have taken French Immersion or FSL courses throughout their high school program, be involved in community activities (preferably using French in these activities), demonstrate leadership in areas related to the promotion of French language and culture and demonstrate a sound academic record. Preference will be given to those who will be pursuing their post-secondary studies in French. Grande Prairie Firefighters Charitable Foundation Leadership Award Value: $1500 Number: One Criteria: Must be enrolled in a full-time program commencing in the same year as the application. Must have and maintain a minimum 65% cumulative average. Must be in good standing with the school’s attendance and participation policies. Must be a resident of the Grande Prairie region. **The winner will receive an additional $1500 to give to a charity of their choice. Students must therefore submit a 2-3 page written proposal outlining their plan for using the money for the charity of their choice with their application package.
