Important Scholarship Dates Letter sent to donor organizations January 22, 2013 verifying information. Letter & information returned to us by February 11, 2014 organization. Office Application forms picked up by the April 7,8,9, 2014 organizations Results sent to us from organizations May 9, 2014 Scholarship/Bursary Awards Ceremony June 11, 2014 IMPORTANT INFORMATION PLEASE NOTE: Applicants are urged to submit NEAT and CAREFULLY COMPLETED application forms. Deadline to submit completed applications to the Counseling Office is Monday March 31, 2014. A RESUME, MARKS COLLECTION FORM, COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT, AND PERSONAL LETTER MUST BE INCLUDED WITH EACH APPLICATION FORM. Emphasize past achievements and future plans. An Award Ceremony will be held in the ADSS Auditorium on a date and time to be announced. All recipients will be notified and will be expected to attend. If you receive an award, please be sure to write a thank you letter as most of these organizations are volunteer, and their members put in a lot of time and effort in order to provide these funds. Contact information will be provided when you receive your award. 3
1. What do I do first? Read the List of Scholarships and Bursaries and select those for which you are qualified. NOTE: You must state how or why you are qualified in the last paragraph on the second page of the Scholarship Application. 2. Does the Scholarship Require a Specific Application? Check to see if the Scholarship or Bursary requires a specific application. If it does, the name of the scholarship will be preceded by an S. These are kept in a file located in the Counselling Office. Yours will not be considered if it is not done on the right form. For all others, just fill out the application form that is included in this package. Note: some have different deadlines and you may have to mail it in yourself. 3. What do I need to send with my application form? Complete the application forms, attach a RESUME, PERSONAL LETTER , MARKS COLLECTION FORM, and a PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT. Several applications require additional information and references. A sample of the personal letter is available in the Counselling Office. If the requirements of the bursary/scholarship specifies a handwritten letter, make sure it is written, not printer or typed. Also, please be sure to sign your letter. *****Do not use long paper!! 4. Do I have to write out a separate application form for each scholarship? No. Complete your application form, leaving out the first questions, which is the name of the scholarship and the number, and the last question, which is how do you qualify. You may copy this application as many times as you need to, and then fill in the scholarship names, numbers, and reasons you qualify on the copies. BE SURE TO PUT THE NAME OF THE SCHOLARSHIP OR BURSARY and its number on the application form. 5. Are my documents in the correct order? Put the completed application form at the front and staple everything together. Do not put in an envelope or duotang. 4
6. Keeping Track If you wish to keep track of the scholarships you are applying for, use the indexes at the back of this package. 7. What do I do with my applications after I have completed them? Return the completed application forms in numerical order, by scholarship number, to Mrs. Sexton in the Counseling Office by March 31st, 2014. No late forms will be accepted. NOTE: “Scholarships” are not restricted to the “A” students...a good C+ average will be considered. Also, most awards are given to students proceeding to ANY post- secondary institution, which includes university, regional college, BCIT, nursing school and vocational institutions. Furthermore, a considerable amount of money is available in the form of bursaries that depend more on financial need or volunteer work, rather than on high marks. The write-ups below the names of the scholarships are the qualifications that the scholarships or bursaries are based on. For example: your field of study or the courses you are currently in, the organization your parents belong to, the organization you belong to, or need. (Be sure to check to see if the scholarship is based on need. even if you don’t have the other qualifications, they may still consider you if you show sufficient need.) If there are specific requirements and you do not qualify, please do not apply as your application may be sorted before they are given to the committee that chooses the winners. 5
ALBERNI DISTRICT SECONDARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES FOR 2014 SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WHICH YOU MUST BE ENROLLED IN 4 ACADEMIC COURSES: 1. CAROLYN LEE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Minimum of $500 Awarded to a student going to a University starting within eight months of graduation. Based on marks, future plans and financial need. Must have a “B” average. 2. ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION, Alberni Valley Branch 293 MEMORIAL Scholarships – 2 @ $750 There will be two $750 Scholarship Awards. Applicants must be a daughter/son or granddaughter/grandson of a Somass Branch 169 member in good standing. This is a onetime application and will be awarded in the applicants’ high school graduating year. The applicant must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution to be eligible for the award. This award is presented at the Legion’s award ceremony which takes place in October. 3. CHINESE CANADIAN SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP - $500 Awarded to a member of the local Chinese community. Award based on academic marks. 4. HOWARD MCLEAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $500 Awarded to a student proceeding to post-secondary education within seven months after graduation. Must have outstanding scholastic achievement and be involved in school and community activities. ***Please note that this scholarship is not offered this year. *** 5. BC PRINCIPALS’ & VICE-PRINCIPALS’ ASSOCIATION REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NON MEMBERS AND FIRST NATION STUDENTS. Awarded to a student who graduates from the BC public school system and proceeds to a post-secondary institution. Applicants will be judged on academic excellence and demonstrated leadership within the school and community. (Separate application you must mail it yourself). You can apply for this first week of March by going to their website www.bcpvpa.bc.ca. 6

BC PRINCIPALS’ & VICE-PRINCIPALS’ ASSOCIATION REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MEMBERS - up to 10 @ $500 Awarded to a student who graduates from the BC public school system and proceeds to a post-secondary institution and whose parents are members of BCPVPA. Applicants will be judged on academic excellence and demonstrated leadership within the school and community. (Separate application you must mail it yourself.)See #5 for website address. 7. NORTH ISLAND COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL BURSARY - $1,000 Awarded to a grade 12 graduate who will be attending North Island College on a full time basis in the following year. Students will be evaluated partially on the basis of need and must have a minimum C+ average. 8. “IN MEMORY OF BRIAN ANTHONY” 1 @ $500 Preference to candidates choosing Physiotherapy, or a medical related field, grades, volunteerism and financial need will be taken into consideration. VAST Eligible. 9. ILONA MAJERCSIK BURSARY FOR TOP ACADEMIC STANDING 1 @ $1000 To be given to a student achieving the highest standing over-all in academic Grade 12 courses. Student must show acceptance to a university or college of their choice for the September 2014 semester, and provides the appropriate enrolment documentation in said institution. Application Not Required. SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES WITH SPECIFIC CRITERIA: YOUR PARENT/GUARDIAN MUST BELONG TO THE ORGANIZATION GIVING THE AWARD 10. BETA SIGMA PHI – “BETA RHO MASTER SORORITY CHAPTER BURSARY - $300 Applicants must be related to an active Beta Sigma Phi member. Any student at ADSS planning to continue their education within (1) year, at a post-secondary institution or certified trades program, can apply. Proof of registration is required at a post-secondary institution or trades program is required. Financial need as well as scholastic standing will be considered. 7
11. BETA SIGMA PHI - PRECEPTOR GAMMA BETA CHAPTER BURSARY – 2 @ $250 Awarded to family member of an active member of Beta Sigma Phi. Must attend a post-secondary institution within eight months of graduation. Financial need as well as scholastic standing will be considered. Must include name of family member. We would expect that the candidate would have done some service or volunteer work in the community. VAST eligible. 12. BETA SIGMA PHI PRECEPTOR XI BURSARY - 2 @ $300 Awarded to a son, daughter, or grandchild of an active member of Beta Sigma Phi. Must attend a post-secondary institution within eight months of graduation. Financial need as well as scholastic standing will be considered. 13. S EFMABC BURSARY – 4 @ $1000 Educational Facility Managers Association of British Columbia is pleased to again offer (4) $1000 bursaries to graduates of the 2013/14 school year. Our association is comprised of administrative and management personnel of school districts who are responsible for construction, maintenance and custodial services, etc. These bursaries are offered to secondary students completing their grade 12 year who will enter a recognized post-secondary educational institution in the year 2014/15 term. Bursaries will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement and/or special needs. Preference will be given to students entering the fields of engineering, architecture, or building technology. Should there not be suitable applications received in these fields, students in other courses of study will be considered, however, all applications MUST be dependents of school district employees in the school plant area (i.e. Maintenance or Custodial). 14. ORDER OF EASTERN STAR BURSARY - $500 Awarded to a student who has Masonic affiliation or relationship (Job’s Daughters, Masons, Order of Eastern Star). Proof of post-secondary registration is required. Financial need will also be considered. 15. ALBERNI DISTRICT COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION BURSARIES 1@ $1,000 (Bursary in Memory of Mr. Harold E. Turner); 1@ $800; 1@ $500 A scholarship award open to members, members’ children or grandchildren. Applicant must indicate the qualifying member’s name and member’s number on the application page #33. Must be registered at ADSS in grade 12, planning to attend any post-secondary institution starting within fifteen months of graduation. Academic achievement, school and community involvement and need will be considered. Write a brief essay (75 words+) on “What is a 8
Cooperative Association.” (You must write the essay to be considered.) All applicants will receive a $10 gift card for the Beaver Creek CO-OP location. 16. S ALBERNI VALLEY CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE BURSARY $500 Awarded to a student (one boy or girl) who, immediately following graduation, is enrolled in full-time studies at any post-secondary institution. Must be a CWL member, be related to a CWL member, or a parishioner at Holy Family/Notre Dame Catholic Church. Church involvement, scholastic Achievement & financial need considered. VAST Eligible. 17. ALBERNI DISTRICT TEACHERS’ UNION BURSARIES 2@$500 Award to be made to graduates who are students planning post-secondary education. This award will be made on the basis of financial need, but marks, school and community involvement, will also be considered. Preference will be given to sons and daughters of ADTU members. (See also ADTU Scholarships #17) 18. ALBERNI DISTRICT TEACHERS’ UNION SCHOLARSHIPS 5@$700 Awarded to students proceeding to post secondary education in this academic year, following graduation. PREFERENCE GIVEN TO DEPENDENTS OF ADTU MEMBERS. Marks and financial need considered. (see also ADTU Bursaries - #16). 19. PORT ALBERNI AND DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL “WALTER BEHN MEMORIAL BURSARY “ - $500 (Union) Awarded to a student at Alberni District Secondary School who will be registered in any post-secondary educational institute within eight months of graduation. Applicant must be a MEMBER OF OR LEGAL DEPENDENT OF a member of ANY union affiliated with the Port Alberni and District Labour Council (Must note which union on application). The following will be considered: marks, marks pertaining to a chosen field, plans for the future, financial need. Must write a paragraph on what you think a Union is. If a paragraph is not included, application will be discarded. Please list union applicant or legal dependent is affiliated with. 20. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS SCHOOL DISTRICT 70 PRINCIPALS AND VICE-PRINCIPALS SCHOLARSHIPS – 2@$500 Awarded to a student proceeding to a post-secondary institution within eighteen months of graduation. Marks, school and community involvement and need will be considered. Preference will be given to a dependent of an Administrative Officer who meets the above criteria but is open to all students. 9
21. UNIFOR LOCAL #592_JACK BREUKER MEMORIAL BURSARY” - $1000 Awarded to a member or a legal dependent of a member of Local #592. Student must be proceeding to any post-secondary institution. Please include a letter which should have a “theme” of how has your parent having a union job affected your family. Academic standing and personal resume will be considered. 22. UNIFOR LOCAL #592 DAVID FRASER MEMORIAL BURSARY” - $1000 Awarded to a member or a legal dependent of a member of Local #592. Student must be proceeding to any post-secondary institution. Please include a letter which should have a “theme” of how has your parent having a union job affected your family. Academic standing and personal resume will be considered. 23. UNIFOR LOCAL #592 “DARYL DEROOY MEMORIAL BURSARY” – $1000 Awarded to a member or a legal dependent of a member of Local #592. Student must be proceeding to any post-secondary institution. Please include a letter which should have a “theme” of how has your parent having a union job affected your family. Academic standing and personal resume will be considered. 24. CANADIAN UNION OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES LOCAL #727 BURSARIES (SCHOOL DISTRICT #70 EMPLOYEES) 3@$1,000 (CUPE #727) Must be a dependent of, or a member of in good standing, Local #727, proceeding to any post-secondary institution in the following year. Financial need and marks will be considered. 25. A. CANADIAN UNION OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES LOCAL #118 BURSARY (CITY OF PORT ALBERNI & PARKS & RECREATION EMPLOYEES) - $1000 (CUPE #118) Must be a dependent of, or a member of, Local 118, proceeding to any post-secondary institution starting within 15 months of graduation. Financial need and marks will be considered. VAST eligible. B. CANADIAN UNION OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES LOCAL ##118 “IN MEMORY OF MONA COLCLOUGH” 1 @ $1000 The student must be a dependent, or a member of Local #118. Proceeding to any post-secondary institution. Starting within 15 months of graduation. Financial need. Marks will be considered. Volunteering is an asset. VAST eligible. 10
26. ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION, Alberni Valley Branch 293 MEMORIAL Bursaries - 4 @ $500 “HOWE MEMORIAL BURSARY” - 3 @ $500 “LOIS TASSIE MEMORIAL BURSARY” - 1 @ $500 Awarded to a son/daughter or grandson/daughter of a member of Branch 169 who is proceeding to a post-secondary institution. The applicant must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution to be eligible for the award. This Award is presented at the Legions award ceremony which takes place in October. VAST Eligible. 27. ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION Alberni Valley Branch 293 LADIES AUXILIARY BURSARY - $500 Awarded to a student who has a connection to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #293, eg. family member. Student must be proceeding to a post- secondary institution in September 2014. VAST Eligible. 28. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, ALBERNI VALLEY COUNCIL #3435 BURSARIES 2 @$500 (Knights of Columbus) Awarded to a student enrolled in a full-year program at any British Columbian post-secondary institution. Award based on satisfactory achievement and financial need. Preference could be given to dependents of Council #3435 members. Recipient must enroll within 14 months of graduation from high school. Bursary will be paid after proof of enrollment. 29. KIWANIS CLUB BURSARY - $500 (Kiwanis) Candidates must register and attend any post-secondary institution within fifteen months of graduation. Marks and financial need will be considered. Students must have done volunteer work for Kiwanis. VAST Eligible. 30. S CATALYST PAPER SCHOLARSHIPS – 3 @ $1000 Applicants must be planning to become a full-time student at a technical institute, community college or accredited public university, following high school graduation and receipt of the award. Deferment of one academic year is permitted where the applicant is participating in a recognized Grade 12 student exchange program. Catalyst Paper Port Alberni Division applicants who qualify are ADSS students and Vancouver Island high school students who are dependants of a current Catalyst Paper Port Alberni Division employee. Applicants must be graduating in 2014. 11
31. s VICTORIA DIOCESAN CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE BURSARY $500 “IN MEMORY OF FREDA SMITH” This bursary will be awarded annually to a graduating student within the Victoria Diocese. This bursary will be awarded to a student proceeding to a form of advanced training in one of the following University Regional College, Technical School, University Transfer Program, Vocational Program or Registered School of Nursing or Medical Services. The bursary will be awarded to children or grandchildren of members of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Victoria. The award will be based upon, Financial need, Academic Performance, Community and Church involvement. SPECIFIC ADSS PROGRAMS: 32. PORTAL PLAYERS PERFORMING ARTS BURSARY $500 (Theatre) Must be a “performing arts” student, (in or out of school). Candidate must be planning to attend a post-secondary institution of a full-time basis with intent to pursue performing arts (either performance or production). Scholastic achievement will be considered. Preference given to students who are, or have been involved with, Portal Players Dramatic Society productions or child and youth programs. Give details of Alberni Valley performing arts involvement. VAST Eligible. 33. PORT ALBERNI ORCHESTRA & CHORUS SOCIETY BURSARY – 1 @ $500 (Music) Bursary is limited to students who are entering a post-secondary music program by the fall of 2014. Proof of acceptance to institution is required. 34. A. S CANADIAN PARENTS FOR FRENCH BURSARY – $500 (Immersion) Awarded to a graduating student of the French Immersion Program whose family has been member of Canadian Parents for French for at least three years prior to graduation. Applicant must: have intention of attending a post-secondary Institution within 2 school years, provide proof of academic achievement, a minimum of 5 hours volunteering which directly promotes the French language. Students must also provide a brief written description explaining how French Immersion has benefitted you in the past and how you hope to see it benefit you in the future. Consideration will be given to families who have actively participated in the CPF organization and its activities throughout the years in French Immersion. Financial need will be considered. Funds will be advanced upon proof of tuition registration, providing it’s within the 2 year limit. VAST Eligible. 12
34 B. s CANADIAN PARENTS FOR FRENCH SCHOLARSHIP - $1000 (Immersion) Awarded to a graduating student of the French Immersion Program whose family has been an active member of the Canadian Parents for French for at least 3 years prior to graduation. Applicants must: have intention of attending a post- secondary institution within 2 school years, provide proof of academic achievement, a minimum of 5 hours volunteer hours which directly promotes the French language. Student must provide a brief written description explaining how French Immersion has benefitted you in the4 past and how you hope to see it benefit you in the future. Consideration will be gi8ven to families who have actively participated in the CPF organization and its activities throughout their years in French Immersion. Funds will be advanced upon proof of tuition registration, providing it’s within the 2 year limit. VAST Eligible. 35. COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL BURSARY - $200 (Arts)Award based on performance and achievement of the individual in the arts, past and present, academic achievement and financial need. MUST BE IN SOME AREA OF THE ARTS, i.e. drama, music, visual arts, creative writing. Must attend a post- secondary institution starting within eight months of graduation. VAST Eligible. 36. GLENN WONG MEMORIAL FUND BURSARY 1 @ $500 This bursary will be awarded to a SD#70 student who has demonstrated commitment to community involvement and has financial need. The recipient will also be chosen based on academic achievement particularly Sustainable Resources. The student must also plan to attend a post-secondary institution within fifteen months of graduation. Glenn Wong was a School Trustee in SD#70 from 1999 until his untimely passing in September of 2012. Glen worked tirelessly to improve educational opportunities for Alberni students and was passionate about sustainable resource based courses. His dedication and commitment to our community set a high standard for students to aspire to. 37. “STANLEY GRAVES MEMORIAL BURSARY” - $1,000 (Drama) Awarded to a graduate of ADSS and is to assist a student registered at a post- secondary educational institution in a first year program in the field of acting. It will be awarded to the most outstanding senior acting student as selected by a committee from School District 70 (Alberni). The criteria used by the selection committee will include grade point average in senior acting courses, performance work, reliability, and dedication of the candidate. 13
38. MAURICE JONES MUSIC AWARD - $500 (Music) Awarded to a student who has made a contribution towards excellence in music during his/her high school years. Recipient must be entering a post-secondary institution. Payment will be made upon presentation of proof of tuition. Preference will be given to a student who has a financial need. The award will not be given if there is not an appropriate candidate. 39. HARRIS & COMPANY LLP Law 12 SCHOLARSHIP 1 @ $200 (Law) The scholarship is available to a Law 11 or 12 student who excels in this course of study. If the school district does not offer a Law course, an alternate course may be selected by the school district. VAST eligible. ENTERING A SPECIFIC AREA OF STUDY: 40. WEST COAST GENERAL HOSPITAL AUXILIARY BURSARY 2 @ $2000 (Health Care) One Bursary for Candy Stripers in the health care field. Second Bursary to any student going in to the health care field, beginning within fifteen months of high school graduation. (Award $1000 in September and $1000 in January.) Scholastic achievement and need will be considered. 41. ALBERNI DISTRICT RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION BURSARY - $500 (Education) Awarded to a student entering a post-secondary institution within eighteen months of graduation. Must be pursuing a course of education leading to a qualified teacher’s certificate. Financial need, marks, school and/or community involvement will be considered. 42. BOUTIQUE BELLES AMIES BURSARY 1 @ $300 (Textiles) Any student continuing on in the fashion, or designer related industry. Based on need, merit and future enrollment in post-secondary education. Used within 12 months of graduation. 43. DR. BRENT MANSON – FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC BURSARY - $250 (Health Field) Awarded to a student entering any post-secondary institution starting within fifteen months of Graduation. Student must demonstrate a good work ethic, have a financial need and be going into the field of health sciences. Involvement in the Community will also be taken into consideration. VAST eligible. 14
44. S B.C. ASSOCIATION OF HEALTH-CARE AUXILIARIES - $1000.00 This Association offers an annual scholarship/Bursary to assist a deserving student entering post-secondary education at a recognized institution in a human Health-related field. It is open to all students meeting these qualifications: residency in the Province of British Columbia volunteer service to an accredited health-related facility (minimum 100 hours) Career prep DOES NOT count as volunteer hours. Intention to enroll in further education as above A grade point average of 3.0 or higher Need for financial assistance A BCAHA Board representative will contact the successful candidate. Funds will be forwarded on receipt of proof of eligible registration. 45. S ALBERNI FARMER’S INSTITUTE – BURSARY 1 @ $250 This bursary will be awarded to a graduate of ADSS (VAST included) who: will be proceeding to a recognized program in Agriculture, including certificate diploma courses in various Farming and Agriculture disciplines focusing on food production for commercial purposes. Proof enrollment must be submitted prior to bursary being awarded. Eligibility Criteria: Previous involvement or experience in Agriculture. Demonstrated need. Student can demonstrate that program will lead to employment. Suggested Courses, Programs that may fit the bursary. Olds College, Alberta – Agriculture Programs University of the Fraser Valley - Dept. of Agriculture/Horticulture UBC Dept. of Plant Science Vancouver Island University – Horticulture Dept. (prefer students with a focus on food production). Kwantlen Polytechnic University – Institute for Sustainable Horticulture. Gaia Colege – Diploma in Organic land Care Permaculutre Institute of BC (Kootenays) Kwantlen – Bachelor Applied Science in Sustainable Agriculture. 46. “NATASHA RAI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP” - $500 Awarded to a grade 12 graduate entering a program at a post-secondary school in the areas of film and television, directing or scriptwriting. Should have taken ABC News and one or more related courses such as directing/scriptwriting 12, Acting 12, Video Production 12, and Media 12. This scholarship was created in memory of ADSS graduate, Natasha Rai. It is given to a student that possesses the same combined talents she showed in her 15
Acting, Directing, Media and Broadcast Media classes that she took at ADSS. It is also hoped that the student will pursue post-secondary education in film and television, in acting or production as Natasha was doing when her life was tragically cut short in 1999. Natasha was a strong, creative and unique young woman whom the ADSS Visual & Performing Arts Department is honoured to recognize through this scholarship 47. ALBERNI VALLEY ENHANCEMENT SOCIETY BURSARY 1@ - $500 (A local organization, affiliated with some other like-minded provincial organization, that work towards improving our environment.) This bursary will be awarded to a graduating student who plans to enter an environmental/conservation program at a post-secondary institution. A student will be chosen on the basis of need and scholastic standings. Documentation shown in volunteering in conservation activities will be a benefit. VAST Eligible. 48. BARRY GUS CRISIS RESPONSE MEMORIAL FUND BURSARY - $250 (Counselling, Social Work, Health Field) This bursary will be awarded to an individual who wishes to pursue a career in a field that helps others, beginning at a post-secondary institution within fifteen months of graduation. This bursary is in memory of the late Barry Gus, who was a volunteer board of director that helped establish the Kuu-Is Crisis Line Society. PARKSVILLE QUILT HOUSE QUILTERS’ GUILD BURSARY 2 @ $750 Awarded to a student who will have either graduated from a school in central Vancouver Island (SD#68, SD#69, SD#70 Alberni or SD#71), or is a member, child or grandchild of a member in good standing in the Society. The bursary is to fund post-secondary education at an accredited institution. Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in textile arts, fashion design or graphic design; as well as students who have demonstrated a strong interest/personal portfolio in quilting, quilting history, or textile arts, or who are or will be attending post-secondary education in Canada. 16

S FIR PARK VILLAGE AWARD FOR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING - $500 (Volunteering) Awarded annually to a grade 12 student, this award recognizes a student for his/her outstanding service in the community as a volunteer and will be proceeding to a post-secondary institution within twelve months of graduation. Volunteer time share with the senior community, or volunteering with groups such as special needs, hospital and/or care homes will be more strongly considered. A separate application form will need to be completed (available from the Counseling Office) containing the following information: Highlight your volunteer involvement Describe why you believe volunteering is important Explain what you personally gain from volunteering and what you perceive the recipient gains. Two references, representing two different sources Proof of registration will be required for the recipient of the bursary. VAST eligible. 51. ALBERNI VALLEY MUSICAL THEATRE SOCIETY AWARD - $500 (Musical Theatre) Awarded to a student who may have been involved with Theatre music in Port Alberni or an ADSS musical production. Student must be continuing in any post- secondary institution, starting within the next school year. (Proof of registration is required). Academic achievement and financial need will be considered. GYRO CLUB OF THE ALBERNIS BURSARY - 2 @ $750 “The Wilf Souther Memorial” The Gyro Club of the Albernis is pleased to offer two $500.00 bursaries to worthy students based on not only academic achievement but also financial need. These bursaries are available to any students entering post-secondary schooling, university or college, vocational, technical and such. Receipt of the monies will be contingent upon proof of acceptance to an accredited post-secondary institution in British Columbia. 17

ALBERNI VALLEY UNITED CHURCH ANNUAL ADSS BURSARY – 1 @ $500 This bursary shall be awarded to a graduating ADSS or VAST student who has: shown by way of a reference letter that the student has been regular in school attendance and maintained a positive attitude toward his/her studies while at ADSS; shown by way of reference letter that the applicant is involved in community service, preferably by involvement through place a worship; plans to continue his/her education in an accredited post-secondary institution in the same year in which the funds are released; shown a need of financial support to continue his/her educational goals. The choice of recipients shall be made by the AVUC Mission and Service Committee. Awards will be announced at the ADSS graduation, but will be issued only upon proof of registration at an approved post-secondary educational institution. All awards must be claimed within 24 months of graduation from ADSS. VAST Eligible. 54. PAT AND JOHN SQUIRE MEMORIAL BURSARY 1 @ $500 To be awarded to grade a 12 student entering post-secondary education within eight months of graduation. Proof of enrolment will be required to claim the funds. The recipient would have displayed an interest in social activism in school, the community, or both. Participation in such activities as leadership class, mentoring and tutoring other students, seniors assistance, volunteering in the mental health field and environmental protection would be examples but this is by no means an exhaustive list. Yet also take the time to look beyond these activities to something broader. How were the benefits of health and education achieved? How are the rights of seniors achieved and where do the laws that protect our environment come from? Academic achievement would also be considered but would not be a top criteria. Students applying are required to write an essay of 200 words or more on what social activism means to them. 55. SCOTT FRASER, MLA SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP 1@$500 ADSS and 1@$500 VAST Must have a good record of achievement and outstanding involvement in community activities and/or social justice issues. The student must have a C+ average in the five best subjects with no marks less than C. Must demonstrate good citizenship, character and sportsmanship. The applicant must be involved in the sport of ice hockey in the last year as a player, a coach, or an official. 62. S VANCOUVER ISLAND AMATEUR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION- VIAHA Scholarships will be awarded to VIAHA registered members who apply and who best combine the qualifications described on the separate application form. The officers will determine the number and the amount of the scholarships each year. VIAHA wants to give recognition to their members who develop their academic career aspirations, at the same time nourishing their interest in hockey. All scholarship candidates must be current registered members of VIAHA or former members playing in the Western Hockey League who are in their graduating year at the high school. S BC SOCCER ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP The British Columbia Soccer Association is proud to award scholarships every year to young adults involved in the game and proceeding on to post-secondary education. The scholarships are awarded at a special Scholarship Luncheon at the British Columbia Soccer Association’s Annual General Meeting held in June each year. All applications must be sent directly to your Youth District Chair, who will sign and forward the application to the British Columbia Soccer Association Office. Must demonstrate good citizenship, character, and sportsmanship. Must be involved with the AVMLA in some capacity (ex. Player, coach, official or regular volunteer). A candidate with significant involvement with the sport of lacrosse may be given preference. Applicants must submit both a resume and formal letter which includes their post-secondary plans and their past involvement in lacrosse. BC SUMMER GAMES - PORT ALBERNI SCHOLARSHIP 3 @ $500 (Volunteering) Awarded to a Port Alberni students who have demonstrated the spirit of the BC Summer Games by participating in sports at a very high level and had competed in the BC Summer Games. Student must also be involved in community and school volunteering in sports activities. Must be planning post-secondary education within the year following grad. Must have a good academic record. Applicants must have attended Maquinna Elementary School for at least 3 years. Preference will be given to those who have had learning assistance. Award based on citizenship, financial need and marks. 75. WOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PAC BURSARY - $250 Applicants must have attended Wood or Redford Elementary School (or any combination thereof) for a period of three years. Successful applicants must attend a post-secondary institution within two years; proof of registration and attendance is required. Financial need and grades will be considered in the selection process. Applicants with a demonstrated financial need may be selected over other applicants with the same grades. 76. JOHN PAUL ll CATHOLIC SCHOOL BURSARY 1 @ 250 Awarded to a former student from John Paul ll Catholic School who attended at Least the senior year at JPll. Bursary is to be used for post-secondary education. It will be awarded for effort and citizenship. Applicant must write a minimum of a 250 word essay explaining why they should be given this bursary, how they have volunteered in the community, and how the money will be used. A letter of recommendation from an adult, other than a family member, and must accompany the essay. 77. NEILL MIDDLE SCHOOL PAC BURSARIES 2 @ $500 Must have attended A.W. Neill Middle School for at least 2 years, including grade 8. Awarded to a student who plans continued education within 18 months. Monies must be claimed within 18 months of award. Preference will be given to the student whose parents, or themselves, have participated in the Parents Advisory Council of ADSS and/or volunteered within the various programs/clubs/events at the school. Secondly, volunteer and community experience will be considered, as well as financial need. Submitted with the application should be a short paragraph describing what the Parents Advisory Council (PAC) of ADSS has done for students and indicate how the student/parent has contributed to the PAC and/or school community. Recipients of this award must provide a copy of their post- secondary institution course registration form prior to the funds being released to them, and should be prepared to attend a Rotary Club regular meeting to acknowledge receipt of their award after the funds have been released. S MASONIC BURSARY FUND Masonic Bursaries are intended to assist the advanced post-secondary education of promising young men and women who, otherwise, would not be able to continue their education in Full-Time graduate and/or diploma courses, and are NOT TRANSFERABLE. Although consideration is given to scholastic standing, MASONIC BURSARIES ARE GRANTED PRIMARILY ON THE BASIS OF FINANCIAL NEED. Therefore, a letter from a Freemason (Please call Sandy McCruer 723-5436) or the secretary of a Masonic lodge, sponsoring the applicant, should accompany this form, indicating the circumstances which make this application necessary, and confirming any known details of need and/or special circumstances.
