WELCOME CLEMSON FAMILIES Welcome, Clemson Families! Congratulations on your student’s acceptance and decision to enter Clemson University. The Clemson Family Advisory Board (CFAB), which is operated and funded by the Clemson University Division of Student Affairs, works with the Office of Student Transitions and Family Programs to offer a wide range of opportunities for you to volunteer and become engaged. AUGUST 2018 TIPS • Have you purchased your tickets for 2018 Fall Family Weekend yet? It is right around the corner. Be sure to get your tickets at clemson.edu/parents. • Families can have a significant influence on their student's decisions when it comes to alcohol use. Take the initiative to have open communication with your student about friends, roommates and weekend activities. It is important to continue these conversations throughout the school year. Be sure to encourage your student to attend the Kick- Off Clemson events to meet new people. There are a variety of events to connect with other students, clubs, organizations and the local community. SEPTEMBER 2018 TIPS • Talk to your student about how they can use active bystander strategies to help maintain a safe campus environment. For help starting the conversation, visit clemson.edu/ healthy-campus/aspire/ to-intervene.html. • Academics look very different from high school to college. There are fewer assignments, which may impact grades. Remind your student about resources they can use throughout the semester such as those provided by the Academic Success Center. FIRST FRIDAY PARADE • When students begin college, they are adjusting to new freedom and schedules. You may see a change in how often they communicate with you as they begin to find their place at Clemson. • Clemson provides free, evening transit service on campus seven days a week from 6 p.m.–6 a.m. Your student can request the Tiger Transit service by calling 864-656-3333 or through the my.Clemson app. • Cooper Library is open 24 hours a day beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Cooper Library closes on Friday at 8 p.m. Saturday hours are 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Students can check out a study room or use one of the other comfortable study spaces available. OCTOBER 2018 TIPS • Flu season begins as early as October. Encourage your student to get the flu vaccine now, as it takes about two weeks to build up immunity. Flu shots are available at Redfern Health Center. • Around this time of year, relationships can cause increased anxiety. The “honeymoon” stage of roommates or friendships may be over, and students may find themselves in some disagreements. Encourage your student to work with their Resident Assistant (RA) if they get into an uncomfortable roommate situation. STUDENT FESTIVAL • Be alert to emotional changes in your student that may reflect signs of depression or anxiety. Many things could cause these changes, and for some, they may lead to increased alcohol and/or drug use. Learn more about mental health by visiting clemson.edu/studenthealth and be willing to talk with your student. • Become familiar with the academic calendar and use it to guide conversations with your student. Ask them now about their classes. October is midterm month, and they should have a good gauge on how they are doing with their studies. • Be on the lookout for University Professional Intern/Co-op Program (UPIC) listings to become available mid-October. NOVEMBER 2018 TIPS • As course registration begins for spring semester, ask your student if they are considering a Creative Inquiry course or studying abroad. These are great opportunities for your student to enhance their college experience. • Going home for the break is always an exciting time for students to reconnect with family and friends. Be sure to talk through your expectations of one another to avoid any potential issues as the Thanksgiving and Winter Break are coming up. HABITAT HOUSE BUILD • Talk to your student about their plans for future semesters in terms of classes, study abroad, and co-op and internship opportunities. Ask them if they are thinking about changing their major or adding a minor to their studies. A semester or summer abroad can often be part of your tuition payments. • We are embarking on finals time. Encourage your student to prepare well and avoid the temptation of misusing prescription drugs with the impression it will help them concentrate. DECEMBER 2018 TIPS • If your student is unsure of their major, have them meet with a career counselor at the Center for Career and Professional Development to take interest inventories and discover what majors may be a match with their interests and skills. • When leaving for home, it is crucial students unplug all appliances, turn off lights and lock the door to their residence hall room or home. • Your student’s final grades are out. December will be a great time to encourage your student to reevaluate their study and time management STUDENT LEADER SOCIAL EXAM STUDY BREAK habits or seek extra help in the Academic Success Center for the upcoming semester, if needed. • College provides a great opportunity to meet and work with all different types of people. Encourage your student to explore diverse relationships and promote an open dialogue with students different from themselves. • Are you taking advantage of the many resources for you as a family? JANUARY 2019 TIPS • Now is the time for your student and family to consider submitting your 2018–2019 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be completed annually to secure aid for the next academic year. It is recommended to complete the FAFSA soon after January 1 to ensure the maximum award. The priority deadline is March 1. • There are a variety of spring break opportunities available to Clemson students. If your student is looking for a unique experience, have them check out one of the Alternative Break Projects across the United SPRING CAREER FAIR States or a trip with Clemson Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE). • The Clemson Academic Success Center offers great workshops to help students start off strong at the beginning of the semester — the list of options can be found on their website. • Encourage your student to embrace their individuality. FEBRUARY 2019 TIPS • Have you purchased your tickets to the 2019 Spring Family Reunion yet? If not, be sure to register at clemson.edu/parents. • The Study Abroad Fair gives students an opportunity to see how they can immerse themselves in another culture for a semester or summer. Encourage your student to attend the Study Abroad Fair to learn more about these opportunities. • If your student is unsure of a class, talk to them about getting help before it’s too late. There are tutors, workshops, group study sessions U-NITES! EVENT and much more offered for them at Clemson. • Black History Month events begin in February. Encourage your student to attend and participate in the wide array of activities during the annual celebration month. • Cooper Library has a wide variety of technology that can be checked out for university-related use. They offer photography and video equipment, virtual reality items such as HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, projectors, gaming consoles and games, as well as calculators, cables and other accessories. MARCH 2019 TIPS • Spring break is here. Talk with your student about health and safety, and encourage them to be safe and responsible. For more information on health and wellness, visit clemson.edu/healthy-campus. • Talk to your student about where they plan to live next year in terms of on- or off-campus housing. Remaining on campus has many benefits in terms of close access to the library, dining locations and other facilities/programs. • If your student plans to move off campus, make sure they read the REDFERN HEALTH CENTER CORE TRIP terms of their lease carefully before signing. They should also start securing a storage space for their belongings if their new lease does not begin when their current one ends. • March is a busy time for students with midterms, spring break and organizations in full swing. APRIL 2019 TIPS • It is time for finals. Encourage your student to prepare well and avoid the temptation of misusing prescription drugs with the impression it will help them concentrate. Remind your student to get enough sleep, exercise, eat well and prioritize tasks. To learn more, visit clemson.edu/ healthy-campus. • The Center for Career and Professional Development has many on-campus internships and employment opportunities available for students. Internships are often paid over the summer and provide an excellent way for students to gain TRIATHLON EVENT experience for competitive positions. • If your student is not employed over the summer, have them consider taking a class or two. This is a great time to check out some of the summer class options Clemson offers as well as get ahead in their degree program. • Springtime is beautiful in Clemson. Encourage your student to get outside and take advantage of the sunshine. Studying at the amphitheater, walking through the South Carolina Botanical Garden, grabbing an ice cream at '55 Exchange or going on a hike are popular options with our students. MAY 2019 TIPS • Have you booked your hotel room yet for 2019 Fall Family Weekend? Rooms fill quickly. Find out more information at clemson.edu/parents. • Please note you will not receive a copy of your student’s grades per federal law (if your student is over age 18). Minimum Cumulative Grade- Point Ratio (MCGPR) requirements for enrollment are based on a student’s credit load. Consult the Undergraduate Announcements for MCGPR requirements. • Students may have feelings of anxiety attached to the idea of going GRADUATION home for the summer and losing their new-found sense of freedom. It is important to have discussions about what life will be like back in the house and set clear expectations. Will they have the same rules as before? Will they need to check in when going somewhere? • If your student loves the outdoors, have them check out Clemson Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE) trips. JUNE 2019 TIPS • There are several sources of financial assistance available such as grants, scholarships and loans. Encourage your student to apply for as many of these as possible — even small scholarships will help. • Ask your student to review what resources they still need versus what they thought they might need, i.e. magazine and streaming subscriptions. Discuss what could be eliminated and where budgets might be cut. • Is your student around campus for the summer? This is a great time INTRAMURAL SPORTS to enjoy the sunshine and be on the lake. Encourage your student to rent a kayak, paddleboard or canoe from CORE and get out on the water. • Try not to take it personally if your student misses Clemson. Just as they missed you when they came to college, they will also miss their new friends while they are home. Don’t be surprised if you get visitors over the summer or if your student wants to visit a friend. • Keep an eye out for financial aid package notifications to be released (for continuing students only). JULY 2019 TIPS • Since the school term is about to begin, take advantage of this time to figure out what belongings your student will need in preparing to come back — especially if they are moving off campus. • If your student has taken a class at another institution during the summer, be sure the transcripts are sent to Clemson to ensure your student’s records are up to date. • While it is quiet, this is a good time to look over your student’s housing contracts for the fall. Become familiar with when your student can BEACH BASH move in, what they can and cannot bring, when payments are due, etc. • Car issues can be challenging for students.
