I’m delighted that one of your family members is preparing to join us at Georgian College this fall! I recently began my new role here as President and CEO, and I can already say with great confidence that making the decision to come to Georgian was the right one for me. I had many questions when I first arrived at Georgian. First-year students do too – everything from “Where is my class?” to “How can I do well on my assignments?” No matter the question, please encourage your family member to ask! Our friendly and knowledgeable staff members are here to help. First-year students also face new challenges, such as learning to manage their time, developing effective study habits, taking quality notes and managing a budget. We have the resources and services in place to ensure they transition successfully into college life – from counselling and tutoring, to learning strategies and financial aid advice. Orientation is a great way to start the year. It’s an opportunity for students to get all the information they need while connecting with other incoming students. But it doesn’t stop there – I know our staff works hard behind the scenes to ensure there are programs and events in place year round, tailored to meet student needs and make them feel part of the overall Georgian community. One of the things I love most about Georgian is that it’s impossible to get lost in the crowd. Your family member will feel noticed and be noticed. Small class sizes mean personal interaction with professors who know their name and are committed to their success. There are also many opportunities to stretch and grow outside of the classroom. Your family member can have a voice in student government, participate in clubs and events on campus, join a varsity or intramural team, or make an impact out in the community through various volunteer and fundraising initiatives. This calendar is designed to provide you with insight into what the first-year experience at Georgian is like. It will help you keep up-to-date with what’s happening and offer tools and tips on how you can contribute to and support your loved one’s success. What an exciting time for all of us! MaryLynn West-Moynes President and CEO
