Rotary Club of Edmonds April 2021 the wave The Rotary Calendar for April 2021 is focused on Maternal and Child Health. The icons in the bottom right corner of the picture represent all six areas of RI focus: Peace & Con ict Prevention/Resolution; Disease Prevention & Treatment; Sanitation & Hygiene; Maternal & Child Health; Basic Education & Literacy; and Economic & Community Development. A 7th area of focus, Supporting the Environment, has been added effective July 2021. Below are our two most recent Students of the Month, both from Meadowdale High School. At left is Lilli Broce, February, and Saima Ahmad was recognized for March. As President Beth accepts a check for $2,240 from the folks at Ace Hardware, she’s wearing a big smile behind that mask. Every month Ace donates their “Round up” tip jar to a local charity, and this was our lucky month. fl
Latest from Edmonds School District~ Dr. Gustavo Balderas, Superintendent of Edmonds School District joined our meeting in March. In addition to explaining the upcoming Capital Levy, he answered questions about getting kids back in school. It’s been a difficult challenge meeting the needs of children and parents. Edmonds is now on a hybrid in-person schedule. Club Retreat - May 22 on ZOOM Musical treat ~ We welcomed David Gilden to our meeting Help us plan for the year ahead! recently - all the way from Texas, via ZOOM of course. He shared his love of the music of West Africa, playing an ancient instrument called the Kora. The kora is a string instrument, usually with 21 strings, which is played by plucking with the fingers. The sound is very light and airy, rather like the lute, or harp. The sound and the melodies were very reminiscent of many classical European pieces, and lighter, such as Irish tunes. He finished the concert by playing some traditional music from Bach. A very versatile instrument. Very enjoyable program! And thanks to Lamin Manneh for discovering him for us!
Welcome to Maholoholo! We had a live meeting with the folks at Maholoholo from their Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in South Africa. They shared their experiences, along with outstanding photos of their efforts at repairing, rehabilitating, and returning to the natural habitat, injured wild animals, most wounded at the hands of poachers. ZOOM allows us to welcome these great programs, like David Gilden as well, and we are grateful in this case to President Beth Kealy for bringing Maholoholo to our attention, having been a visitor there herself. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal visits Edmonds Rotary We were pleased to welcome 7th District Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal to our meeting recently. With so many topics to talk about, rather than just give a speech she agreed to a question and answer session to respond to issues most important to members. She shared her expectations and priorities for the current year and beyond with respect to legislation, stating that the recent Covid relief package was one of the most signi cant pieces of legislation she has voted for so far, and explaining how it will help the nation in recovering from the pandemic When asked about the January attack on the Capital, she responded candidly that even though she would like to say she felt safe, “I didn’t feel safe.” Recovering from knee surgery, she was still using a cane and was trapped in the House Gallery, “RACE MATTERS to ROTARY” unable to get away “from people who wanted to kill me.” She described it as a “horri c experience”. A District 5030 Forum As Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, she has sponsored and supported legislation on Medicare for All, Saturday, April 17, 2021 @ 9AM immigration reform, housing and education. This ts right into line with what she says are her personal priorities in her work in Congress Join Rotary International Director Valarie She continues to work with other members of Congress in Wafer to learn what Rotarians are doing support of issues important to her, such as the Ultra Millionaire around the world to promote diversity, equity Tax Act, climate change, gun control, and the $15 minimum wage and inclusion. We’ll have a robust Q&A She answered questions candidly, especially from members followed by break-out sessions to discuss concerned about access to Covid vaccine, and about children and and determine next steps for Rotarians immigrant conditions at the border On a more personal note, when asked why she chose to run for locally. of ce, she replied that it was never part of her intentions. From the Edito 2021 Spring has nally arrived! We know because the rain is warmer, right? But also the days are longer, and we start to see life in the garden. Hopefully, we are moving beyond the winter of Covid-19 as well. I’ve had both my P zer doses, and have even enjoyed a trip to the Seattle Art Museum to see the wonderful Jacob Lawrence exhibit: The American Struggle. There are still more days of caution ahead. I just bought a new pair of Ugg slippers (my every day go-to while working from home) and I just added a few new masks to my “spring wardrobe” for when I carefully venture out. We are looking forward to events now in addition to our weekly ZOOM meetings. The Photomarathon will still be via ZOOM in June - we found out that was actually a better way to do it. Keeping our ngers crossed that Oktoberfest will actually be LIVE in September. While the RI Conference will be virtual in June (think about attending at least a few sessions if you can), we’re hoping we’ll be able to go to Coeur d’Alene for the District Conference in October . September 24 - 25, 2021 It has been a hard year, some of us have lost friends and loved ones. We all have struggled, at home and with work. We’ve found some creative solutions too, and perhaps have some changed ideas about priorities. The ZOOM Box has worked amazingly well, but we miss our members PHOTOMARATHON that have not been able to join in. Hopefully we’ll soon be able to meet together; hybrid June 12, 2021 meeting? I’ll take it Hang in there. Take a walk, get some sun. Get your shots. Wear your mask. Happy Spring! Pat Thorpe, Edito c’est nis What: 6 Themes - 6 Photos - 6 Hours When: Starts at 10am Where: ZOOM Another fun family event… Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Edmonds fi fi fi r r fi
