‘KNOTTY LETTERS” PROGRAM DETAILS From the distant dark ages is a Spanish psalter, completed in 567, in which resides this unique interlaced knot work Zoomorphic initial ‘C.’ Come paint it with me! I’ll e-mail the pattern to you so that you can use it over and over again. Beautiful and meaningful knot work, aka Celtic Knots, are wonderful on their own and when accompanied with your Uncial calligraphy. Upon registration, I’ll send you the painting pattern, an image of the original initial, and my drawing (for your reference), the short material list and my contact info should you have any questions. I’ll paint along with you in our studio Zoom class, answering your questions and sharing all my tips and tricks for successfully painting knots. Some of my Valentines are below. 2021 2018 2020
VALENTINE’S DAY DISPLAY BY MARY GRIMES When Mary Grimes was an employee at the Paper Source in South Coast Plaza in 2008, she designed their Valentine’s Day window dis- play. She wanted to send the white card to Papyrus so they could make three-dimensional cards but never got around to it. Each envelope on the card was handwritten. She used a Hallmark envelope with the gold lining to make the golden envelopes that are shiny. The postman and his bag of letters are mounted on the card, but the printed cards that she sent our were flat copies. That year, she mailed 150 cards and she plans to send about 300 this year.
VALENTINE GREETINGS FROM JOAN BECHTEL The plaited hearts are a Danish design … these small ones were made with 1/2” strips of Canson paper. The 14” x 10” puzzle below had 500 pieces that were about the size of a penny.
CALLIGRAPHY BY SACHIN SHAH Special thanks to Sachin Shah from Mumbai, India, for allowing me to share his beautiful lettering done with Colorverse inks.
ART FROM De ANN SINGH With leaf prints, block printing ink, Finetec watercolors, and Esterbrook 358 nib.

“WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING” I am taking Violet Smythe’s “Bensgothic” class, another of my many classes now. - Sylvia Kowal
“WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING” What better time to revisit my skills in embroidery and beading to make these hearts! The events these past few weeks have pre- sented many TV hours glued to the tube. This was an opportunity to use up several colors of felt I discovered in my stash. Happy Valentine’s Day! - Anne Bystrom
“WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING” I’ve been painting water lilies during the pandemic. Calligraphy has really helped me to make stronger marks on the canvas. And my signature is much neater! - Joan Resnikoff
“WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING” I did the first piece in January with a photo from a guy in Portland (who gave me permission). It is a microscopic photo of a Mountain Swallowtail butterfly! The second is one I did as a thank you to the fire defense which was made for the El Dorado fire. - Mina Taylor
“WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING” Angela Arcari’s Zoom classes have been extremely helpful to me in dealing with the quarantine. - Sandy Doerr
“WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING” I just took a wonderful work- shop with Syeda Ullah on Watercolor Waves. Here is my art. - Carrie Imai
“WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING” I have been putting puzzles together—lots of them. Some were easy and others were quite difficult. The free-form cat was probably the most difficult one to put together because the pieces did not lock together and kept moving. The Copenhagen one was fun because the pieces were made of wood and fell into place easily. I did discover that store-bought puzzles were not only cheaper, but were better quality, and they came in nice boxes. Most of the puzzles I ordered from Facebook ads came from China in flimsy boxes or they came pre-assembled, sealed in plastic wrappers. - Joan Bechtel
COLLABORATION “TWO PAGES AT A TIME” Online Zoom Presentation: Tuesday, March 23, 2021 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. PDT Cost: $25 via PayPal to: caroldubosch.com/online-teaching/ The session will be recorded and shared. Class size is limited. For additional information: abcdubosch@frontier.com Susan Longerot and Carol DuBosch reaped countless benefits from collaborat- ing on artist books. The project, which was born five years ago, has produced 23 handmade original books. When the pages were finished and the books were completed, each of them had an original book to keep. Two pages at a time: send one and keep one. Take a walk through the pages of six of their favorite books. They will share the joys and benefits of the process, along with a quick-start program for beginning your own. They will share what they have learned along the way to help you experience a successful collaboration. You will leave the class inspired to take an artful journey with a friend that will produce much more than just two beautiful books.
A LAUGH FOR TODAY Copied from a Facebook posting by Cherryl Moote: I have a riddle: If you’re going down a river at 2 MPH and your canoe loses a wheel, how much pancake mix would you need to re-shingle your roof?
NEWS Here are replies I received to my request for information about what people are doing. - Joan Bechtel CAROL HICKS (from January 21): I have joined the Boise guild and they are having a Zoom meeting tonight. It is a virtual Hand Embossing class. My first meeting. Everything is still closed down here (except the restaurants). I am still loving it here, especially my new home. A little snow is expected tonight. Brrrr! Still trying to keep warm. MARY GRIMES: I have been so isolated, spending 100% of my time taking care of two elders in my family, and this year I promise to spend 25% of my time doing things for myself. I will join the group again. I’m driving for Uber, so I have some cash to spend on myself. Getting back to a normal lifestyle again, and I realized that Zoom really helps make it more convenient to take classes. SANDY DOERR: Since COVID-19 quarantines began, Angelina Arcari has been teaching 90-minute live Zentangle sessions on Facebook from her cottage in rural Ireland to help relieve stress. They are at 7:30 a.m. PST, weekdays on Zentangle Club Ireland. Her story was recently fea- tured in the Family Tree section on the Zentangle.com site. Her sessions have been extremely helpful to me and many others around the world in dealing with this quarantine. MINA TAYLOR: I will be starting a beginning class for Photoshop in March on Saturdays. People can write to me at gracetogrow@ yahoo.com if interested. They have to have Photoshop already on their computer. The classes will be by Zoom from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
NEWS CARRIE INMAI: All of the teachers for Letters California Style 2021 have agreed to transfer their teaching to the 2022 conference, and most of the registrants have taken the option to transfer their deposit and their class choices to the 2022 conference. We will come roaring back in 2022. At this point, we are a full conference. If you are interested in attending and have not registered, refer your questions to Carol Hicks at letterscs2022@ gmail.com to be on the “wait list.” We will be in touch with updates by this fall with better news. We are fortunate to have the technology to be able to meet electronically and at the time the Letters conference would have been held, Kristi Darwick is coordinating a wonderful talk by some of our SfC founding members, including Kitty Maryatt and Nancy Ouchida- Howells, moderated by Janet Martorello. You can find information and a registration form at: https://societyforcalligraphy.org/event-4063313/ Registration. For questions and information, e-mail Kristi Darwick at workshops@societyforcalligraphy.org. In the meantime, be well and stay safe. YUKIMI ANNAND: I have been busy taking and instructing online classes. Just finished one with a Japanese group. And I have been taking John Stevens’ “Uncial- Roman” class. JOAN BECHTEL: I hope you are enjoying all the Bernie memes on Facebook as much as I am. I couldn’t resist adding this Facebook photo to the newsletter to remind everyone to follow Bernie’s example and wear a face mask wherever you go.
