14th February 2021 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ash Wednesday We begin Lent this week with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. The signing of ashes on our forehead is a symbol that we are entering the ‘penitential season of Lent’. It is timely for us to reflect on whether we intend making a conscious effort to prepare well for Easter. It is so easy to allow Lent to pass us by and become just another liturgical season to be endured. People have many ways of celebrating Lent. We often hear the phrase ‘what have you given up for Lent’. I suggest that rather than giving something up we may wish to do something extra. Perhaps we could join a ‘Lenten Reflection Group’ or come each Friday evening to pray the ‘Stations of the Cross’. There will be three Masses in the Parish on Ash Wednesday and ashes will be distributed at each Mass. The Mass times are: St Thomas More 9.15am St Patrick’s 12.05pm St Mary’s 5.30pm Napier Inner City Churches (NICC) During Lent we gather each Wednesday evening with our Inner City Covenant Churches for an ecumenical liturgy. The first of these liturgies will be held on Ash Wednesday in St John’s Anglican Cathedral at 7pm. I hope that many parishioners will attend this liturgy in solidarity with our fellow Christians in Napier. Ashes will be distributed. Stations of the Cross during Lent Each Friday evening during Lent the Stations of the Cross will be prayed on Friday evenings at 5.15pm in St Patrick’s Church. You are invited to come and walk the ‘Way of the Cross’ with Jesus. Art Deco Celebrations The annual Art Deco celebrations begin this week and many visitors will be in Hawkes Bay to participate in the celebrations. The New Zealand Male Choir will sing at the 10am Mass next Sunday. Father Barry Scannell s.m. Parish Priest

CWL has been part of the Catholic Parish of Napier since 1942 and has provided Faith and Service for people both locally and overseas. Regrettably, after following a comprehensive process, it is going into recess as we are unable to get people to take up the leadership roles required by the organisation. However it will be replaced by a less formally structured group later. To mark this occasion a Mass of celebration and thanksgiving will be held on Friday 26th February at 9.15am at St Thomas More Church followed by morning tea. (Members a plate please). Some members of the Archdiocesan team are joining us for this milestone. CWL warmly invites the parish to join them on this occasion. Please contact Mary King 8441779 if further information is required.
