District 9970, PO Box 12-243, Christchurch 8242 Club Bulletin, 10th March 2021, Issue 31 Rotary Club of Christchurch South Issy Whitticase—RYLA We welcomed Issy Whitticase back to our Club as guess speaker following her week as our Youth Committee nomination to RYLA. After the uncertainty whether RYLA would proceed this year, it was pleasing to hear that some 40 young adults were able to avail of the excellent programme that the organisers have put in place. As we were advised by Issy in her visit to the Club prior to her attendance at RYLA, she spent two years at Canterbury University studying Law and Fine Arts, and then spent one month in Uganda Speaker, Issy with Club Member Linda with a group of 30 students, led by Laura Robinson. Laura established an organisation for international volunteers who fundraise and collectively the money raised pays for the building of a structure at the end of the year. The students work alongside local builders in Uganda to build a school, medical centre or orphanage for a local non-government organisation. Following her overseas adventure, Issy has changed her university studies to Law and Political Science. Issy advised that the typical daily start at RYLA, was to commence with a 7am personal training session, followed by two or three speakers, then break-out group activities. One of the highlights, was the Comfort, Fear, Learning, Growth zone vector sessions, where the project was public speaking, and where the pitch of the speech was towards Peace and Conflict. Issy commented that the best experience gained was where you were unprepared. It was a delight to see the confidence that Issy has gained in herself and in public speaking, and which she has gained through the opportunities that have been presented and grasped in volunteering, and through the attendance at RYLA. Thank you Graham Fowler for this report and Sarita for the photo
