Following Christ Spreading the Word Serving the Community Additional Prayers – May 2021 As this Prayer Diary covers Christian Aid Week 2021 and, because of the continuing COVID restrictions we are unable to distribute the Christian Aid Devotional, we have reproduced their prayers for each day of Christian Aid week (with the permission of Christian Aid). If you would like an electronic copy of the Devotional, please contact Anne Sutherland or the Church Office, who will send one to you. Christian Aid has been working in Kenya since 1997. The climate crisis is having a significant impact on Kenyan communities. The coronavirus pandemic has increased the urgent need for families to have access to a reliable source of water. Our long-standing partner, Anglican Development Services Eastern (ADSE) is helping climate-vulnerable communities to adapt and become more resilient to prolonged drought and poor rains caused by the changing climate. With every gift, with every voice, with every prayer, with every action, we stop this climate crisis. Christian Aid Week Prayers Day 1: Sunday 9th May Giver of life, thank you for the light of each day, and for your mercy, new every morning. Tune us into the rhythm of your will, renewing, restoring and releasing creation, so we may be co-creators with you. Amen.
Day 2: Monday 10th May Creator of the seas and sky, in this time of climate crisis, as we pour out our feelings, pour in your Spirit of hope and renew our resolve to work together to stop this climate crisis. Amen. Day 3: Tuesday 11th May God of all the earth, you saw the land and called it good, yet for so many today, droughts are prolonged, rains delayed and crops have failed. Help us to work together with you and all of creation to stop this climate crisis. Amen. Day 4: Wednesday 12th May God who spoke stars into being, challenge, awaken and inspire us to raise our voices with the cry of the Earth the prophets throughout history and the prophets of today in our call for justice, climate justice for all. Amen. Day 5: Thursday 13th May Creator God, thank you for the community of creation, for the wonder of sea creatures, for the magnificence of birds in flight, and for the whole family of humanity. Transform our individual isolation Into natural interconnection For the flourishing of all And the glory of your name. Amen.
Day 6: Friday 14th May Water of life, who quenches all our thirsts, become in us a spring that gushes up to eternal life, flowing through our giving, acting and praying that all may drink deeply from your abundance and all of creation may thrive. Amen. Day 7: Saturday 15th May God of the Sabbath, forgive us for ignoring the rhythms of nature for overextending the Earth and each other. Instil in us sustainable ways of resting and enjoying the goodness of creation, and protecting the Earth with all our sisters and brothers. Amen. Day 1 – 7 prayers (above) © Christian Aid; Scottish Charity No. SC039150 “I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me.” John 15: 5 Lord, We ask that the elections taking place on 6th May are peaceful, and everyone wishing to vote is able to do so safely in these strange times. We see all around us, here and across the world, evidence of brokenness and need, which has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. We are sorry if we have taken you for granted, and kept our light hidden during this past year and allowed our saltiness to diminish. As we begin to open up again, we ask that you would raise up men and women with wisdom, hope and perseverance, rooted in Biblical truths, and empathy to serve across our society and, especially at this time, in the Scottish Parliament. Amen
“My commandment is this: love one another, just as I love you. “ John 15:12 Father, As we continue to open the country up after lockdown, we pray especially for our young people, who seem to be the proportionally the most affected by this pandemic. As they think about assessments and exams, Lord, calm their minds and help them to seek Your peace – the peace that passes all understanding. Let them feel your loving arms surround them, especially when they feel most vulnerable. As we work towards meeting together again, help the lessons we are all learning from the Growing Young initiative be put into practice throughout the church, and, above all, help us love one another, no matter what. Amen. “And now I am coming to you; I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world. Holy Father! Keep them safe by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one just as you and I are one.” John 17:11 For Ascension Sunday: 16th May Father, Help us to remember that Ascension was not an act of dominance, but an expression of the power of Love; not the loss of Jesus, but the gift of an ascended Lord, established in victory over everything that would destroy Him. Lift our vision, we pray, to see that victory comes in many forms, and help us not to be discouraged by failure, as it is often through this that You teach us the most valuable lessons. Give us confidence not in our church but in Your Church, not in our faith, but in Your Gospel and not in our success, but in Your Ascension. We so need the message of Ascension in our world today – the confidence from our Risen Lord and the invincible Kingdom of a God who will reconcile all things to himself. Help us show, through words and actions, the hope we have, and the love, truth and integrity which are never defeated, and we pray that the kingdom of this world will become the Kingdom of our God and of His Christ. Amen.
For Pentecost Sunday: 23rd May “The Helper will come—the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God and who comes from the Father. I will send him to you from the Father, and he will speak about me.” John 15:26 God of Spirit and power, give us such confidence in the truth of the gospel that you gave to your early disciples that we will want to share our faith, as naturally as the sun rises and sets each day. May Your Spirit break our reticence as it did the fear of the disciples on that first day of Pentecost. May our lives tell the same story as our lips. May the Spirit that dwells in each one of us find us willing co-workers in tending Your creation. May the Spirit mould us into the likeness of Jesus, so that we will live in the way He lived and love the way He loved. Fill us afresh with Your Spirit and renew us in our service. Amen For if you live according to your human nature, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you put to death your sinful actions, you will live. Those who are led by God's Spirit are God's children.” Romans 8: 13-14 For Trinity Sunday: 30th May Holy God beyond us, lead us forward to pray. You create and sustain all things by the power of self-giving Love. We celebrate the wide diversity of Your creation, and the mystery and joy at the heart of creation. We celebrate the mystery and joy which can be found even in us. At the heart of the mystery is LOVE, the energy behind creation and the foundation of all life. May we build our lives on the firm foundation of Your Love. Son of God beside us, You never leave us comfortless. You always walk beside us. Bless those who have not noticed You there, or who have chosen to ignore you. We pray that they will raise their eyes to see You, our Lord and Saviour. Thank You for showing us how to live well, with generosity, justice & kindness, and guide us to be more like You each day. Holy Spirit within us, we thank you that You are always seeking to infiltrate our lives with peace and strength and give us more of yourself. Where there are people we know in whom hope is running low, be for them a summer breeze and a spring of fresh water. Still our hearts to pray.
Father God beyond us, give us faith. Lord, beside us, give us Your peace. Holy Spirit within us, give us life. Holy Trinity, we place in the strong arms of the Trinity, the concerns of our hearts; the tasks of the week; the people we love; the fears we hide; the world and its labours and all things living. God, the Holy Trinity, make us strong in Faith and Love. Amen
