ORDER OF SERVICE Stand as the Ambassador of the United States of America and Mrs Louis Susman are escorted by the Dean and Chapter to their places under the Dome. HYMN during which the Color Guard present the Colors at the Dome Altar. Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of harvest-home: All be safely gathered in, Ere the winter storms begin: God, our Maker, doth provide For our wants to be supplied: Come to God’s own temple, come; Raise the song of harvest-home! All this world is God’s own field, Fruit unto his praise to yield; Wheat and tares together sown, Unto joy or sorrow grown; First the blade and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear: Grant, O harvest Lord, that we Wholesome grain and pure may be. For the Lord our God shall come, And shall take his harvest home. From his field shall purge away All that doth offend, that day; Give his angels charge at last In the first the tares to cast, But the fruitful ears to store In his garner evermore. Then, thou Church triumphant, come. Raise the song of harvest-home: All be safely gathered in, Free from sorrow, free from sin; There for ever purified In God’s garner to abide: Come, ten thousand angels, come, Raise the glorious harvest-home! Words Henry Alford (1810-71) Tune ST GEORGE’S WINDSOR George Elvey (1816-93)
Remain standing as THE DEAN, THE RIGHT REVEREND GRAEME KNOWLES, gives THE BIDDING We come together on this Thanksgiving Day to remember before God all the peoples of the United States of America. We give thanks for that nation’s history, for its inheritance of faith, for its tradition of liberty, for its defence of freedom, for all that we have received at God’s hand. And we pray for all the nations of the world that men and women may learn to live together in peace. And so we ask for a new vision, a new courage and a new resolve to live according to God’s law. And we come united in our common story and in the faith that we share as we say together: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Sit as the Combined Choirs of American Congregations sing ANTHEM Come, thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, Mount of God's redeeming love. Here I raise to thee an altar, Hither by thy help I'm come: And I hope, by thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wand'ring from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor Daily I'm constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, Bind my wand'ring heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for thy courts above. Words Robert Robinson Music Early American Tune (Nettleton) (1735-1790) from John Wyeth's Repository of Sacred Music, Part the Second (1813) arr. Antony Baldwin (b. 1957) Remain seated THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 105. 1-11 read by THE REVEREND CANON MARTIN WARNER Treasurer, Canon in Residence O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples. Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually. Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the judgements he has uttered, O offspring of his servant Abraham, children of Jacob, his chosen ones. He is the Lord our God; his judgements are in all the earth. He is mindful of his covenant for ever, of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, saying, ‘To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.
Stand HYMN We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing; he chastens and hastens his will to make known; the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing: sing praise to his Name, he forgets not his own. Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining, ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine; so from the beginning the fight we were winning: thou, Lord, wast at our side: all glory be thine! We all do extol thee, thou leader triumphant, and pray that thou still our defender wilt be. Let thy congregation escape tribulation: thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free! Words Nederlandtsche Gedenckclank, 1626 Music Edward Kresmer trans. Theodore Baker (1851-1934) (1838-1914) Sit THE SECOND LESSON 1 Thessalonians 5. 12-22 read by ELIZABETH HEISER The International Community Church We appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you; esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, beloved, to admonish the idlers, encourage the faint-hearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil. Remain seated

As we give thanks for all the blessings which come from your hand, O God, we remember your people who daily struggle to attain basic needs. We pray for those who live as people without land, shelter, food, or companionship and for those who live and serve in areas torn by war and conflict. Give us the will and the courage to seek your justice and mercy, that all people may share in your abundance. Above all, we give you thanks for your Son Jesus Christ, for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Give us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know you and make your presence known; and through you, at all times and in all places, may give thanks in all things. O loving and generous God, you open your hand and satisfy the needs of every living creature: multiply the harvests of the world and let your Spirit renew the face of the earth, so that our land may give her increase, and your people everywhere may give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Stand HYMN Now thank we all our God, With hearts and hands and voices, Who wondrous things hath done, In whom his world rejoices; Who from our mother’s arms Hath blessed us on our way With countless gifts of love, And still is ours today. O may this bounteous God Through all our life be near us, With ever joyful hearts And blessed peace to cheer us; And keep us in his grace, And guide us when perplexed, And free us from all ills In this world and the next. All praise and thanks to God The Father now be given, The Son, and him who reigns With them in highest heaven, The One eternal God, Whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, And shall be evermore.
