Objectives The Competition is organised to: • enhance students’ awareness of and interest in English poetry by poets in Hong Kong • encourage artistic and creative response and expression through producing visual representations of the poems • provide opportunities for cross-curricular collaboration in the promotion of reading 2
Competition Rules & Regulations Two divisions: Junior Secondary (S1-3) Senior Secondary (S4-6) Entries should be submitted: through schools on individual basis Maximum 20 entries from each school (i.e. 10 for each division) Each entry accompanied with an Artist Statement in English to explain the ideas and message of the artwork and the artistic choices made 3
Competition Rules & Regulations Choose a poem from the list on Slide 5 and present it in a two dimensional artwork (e.g. drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, computer graphics), up to a maximum of A2 size. any media, such as poster colour, water colour, crayon, oil pastel and ink, can be used. 4

Adjudication Assessed by poets and officers from the ELE and AE Sections of the EDB based on the following criteria: Understanding of the chosen poem and a clear connection between the poem and the multimodal representation Effectiveness in the use of the chosen mode/medium to present the message and ideas in the chosen poem Originality and creative response to the chosen poem Effectiveness of the artist statement in explaining the ideas of the work and the choices made in the multimodal representation 7
Prizes Award Prizes Outstanding Award Awardees will receive: Outstanding and [About 10 entries in - a certificate Commendable Awards each division] entries will be displayed in - book coupons worth HK$1000 for each “Poetry Dai Pai Dong: A winning entry Collection of English Language Poetry from Hong Kong” (online anthology in Commendable Awardees will receive: the process of development) Award - a certificate [About 20 entries in - book coupons worth Outstanding Awards entries each division] will also be displayed in the HK$500 for each winning entry Exhibition of Student Visual Arts Work 20/21 in July 2021. 8
Collaboration of ELE & AE Teachers Teachers of the two KLAs could: • select a few poems that are appropriate to students’ interests and levels for discussion in class and encourage them to read more on their own to promote self-directed learning • integrate the selected poems into their respective curricula and provide opportunities for analysing, appreciating and re-presenting the poems in a creative way • select and submit outstanding student works as entries for the competition 10
Learning and Teaching Strategies for English Language and Literature in English Teachers Teachers could • discuss with students the themes of the chosen poems and how the use of language and literary devices (e.g. metaphors, imagery) facilitates thematic conveyance with the support of the web resources suggested on Slide 13 • help students connect the poems to their experiences and daily life to develop personal and creative responses • guide students to see the connection between words, images and music with the use of the ETV programme “Between the Lines – Hong Kong Poetry in English” on Slide 14 (particularly 4:50-6:20) • guide students to generate and express ideas, as well as edit the Artist Statement 11
Learning and Teaching Strategies for AE Teachers Visual Arts teachers could help students: • use appropriate visual language of the selected 2D artwork form (e.g. drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, computer graphics) • develop ideas and images for expressing the selected poem such as through appreciating relevant artwork • apply relevant skills and techniques for creating artwork 12
