I don’t believe I fully appreciated the awesome
beauty of New Zealand until Lockdown.
Actually, doesn’t “Shelter-in-Place” sound
so much more romantic! How wonderful to
have time to sit on the patio in the sunshine,
gazing at the picturesque view of the harbour,
the sun casting silvery shadows on the water.
Fluffy clouds hover on the horizon. Why do
they look so different in New Zealand? Is it
my imagination, or do they also have a silver
lining?

It is so peaceful without the sound of traffic on
Waikawa Road, the only sound is the whisper of
the breeze through the leaves in the silk tree,
and the hum of the ferry, now only carrying
freight. Sparrows twitter in the trees, waiting to
swoop down on the lawn for their daily snack of
breadcrumbs. Even the dog at the house next
door is silent – doubtless its owners are working
from home. My neighbour on the other side left
a basket of goodies from their veggie garden.
Silver beet, a big bunch of fresh parsley and
some rhubarb. I have apple puree in the freezer
from my cousin’s vineyard, so I think I will make
a rhubarb and apple crumble. I haven’t made it
in years and wonder if I remember the recipe.

Covid-19 Helpful Information
The Golden Rules for life at Alert Level 3
1. Stay home. If you are not at work, school, exercising or getting essentials then you must be at
home, the same as at Alert Level 4.
2. Work and learn from home if you can. We still want the vast majority of people working from
home, and children and young people learning from home. At-risk students and staff should
also stay at home, and they will be supported to do so. Early learning centres and schools will
physically be open for up to Year 10 for families that need them.
3. Make your business COVID-19 safe. COVID-19 has spread in workplaces, so the quid pro quo of
being able to open is doing it in a way that doesn’t spread the virus.
4. Stay regional. You can exercise at parks or beaches within your region, but the closer to home
the better. Activities must be safe – keep 2 metres away from anybody not in your bubble. Make
   minimal trips.
5. Keep your bubble as small as possible. If you need to, you can expand your bubble a small
amount to bring in close family, isolated people or caregivers.
6. Wash your hands often with soap. Then dry them. Cough and sneeze into your elbow.
7. If you are sick, stay at home and quickly seek advice from your GP or Healthline about getting a
test. There is no stigma to COVID-19. We will only be successful if everyone is willing to play their
part in finding it wherever it is.

Maori Pharmacists Association (MPA) are available to answer any patai kaumatua have around their
medications. In response to the COVID-19 situation, Ngaā Kaitiaki o Te Puna Rongoaāo Aotearoa – the
Maori Pharmacists Association (MPA) recently launched a free phone line to answer questions that
kaumatua or whanau may have about their medicines. People can ring from anywhere across Aotearoa
and their call will be returned within 24 hours by a Maori pharmacist.
These patai (questions) may be things such as:
• How do I use my medicine?
• What is my medicine for?
• What are the common side effects and how can these be managed?
• Should I get the flu vaccine?
• Will my normal medicines be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?
When callers ring the dedicated phone line, they are asked to leave their contact details, and one of a
team of 10 Maori pharmacists will respond and go through their questions. This is not an urgent service.
Whanau are encouraged to continue to call 111 in an emergency, or their normal doctor or Healthline
if they are wanting prompt medical advice. Full information here: http://maoripharmacists.org.nz/dial-a-

FAQ's regarding how to stay
active at COVID-19 Alert Level 3
How far can I travel for physical activity?
When we move to COVID-19 Alert Level 3, some travel is permitted to get to a destination within
your region for recreation. We don't encourage going far from home - go to your nearest beach or
park. Whatever you do it’s important you stick within your extended bubble and maintain physical
distancing of 2 metres from everyone else.

Can I go to the local park with my family/household unit?
Yes, you can walk to a local park, and you can kick a ball or play frisbee, but you must stay inside
your extended bubble and you need to keep your distance from others who may also be using the
park. Whenever you are out and about be extremely careful of ‘high touch items’ like handrails,
avoid touching these and if you can’t avoid it, wash or sanitise your hands as soon as possible.
Ensure you:
• Don’t meet people who are not in your bubble to go for a walk, to the park, or do any other
   non-essential activity.
• If you see people while you’re out and about, give them a happy smile, say hello and check
they’re ok as you pass them, but don’t stop to talk unless there is an emergency. Maintain 2
metres physical distancing when you see other people.
• Make sure you tell someone in your household where you’re going and how long you plan to be
gone for - take a cell phone with you so you can be contacted or contact others if you need to.
• Thoroughly wash your hands once you return home.

Can I use the playground at my local park with my family/household unit?
No, playgrounds are closed. That is because touching or using playground equipment may spread
COVID-19.

Can I drive to a park or the beach outside of my neighbourhood and go for a walk?
Yes you can. Stay as close to home as possible, and we recommend you go to your nearest park
or beach. If it is too busy to maintain 2 metres distancing from people outside your bubble, go
home. You should also avoid touching any hard surfaces (such as seats or rails) as these may spread
COVID-19.

Can I go to the local school to use their playground?
No. School playgrounds are not open for the public.

Can I go to the beach with my family/household unit?
You can visit the beach as long as you keep your distance from other people. Now we’re in
COVID-19 Alert Level 3, some travel is permitted to get to a destination for recreation. Keep as
close to home as you can.

Can I go for a swim in the ocean/river with my family/household unit?
Yes, you can swim in the ocean or a river. Don't go far from shore, and you must maintain physical
distancing of 2 metres from anyone outside your bubble.

Can I go to a swimming pool?
No. All public aquatic facilities remain closed.

What water-based activities are permitted?
You can swim, surf, kayak, canoe, snorkel, row, windsurf and paddle-board. Single waka ama is also
possible. You must stay in your bubble. Do not share equipment with those outside of your bubble
(even with physical distancing) and only go out when conditions are calm and it is safe. Stay close
to shore.

You cannot do water-based activities that involve sailing boats, scuba diving, or other motorised
craft or equipment. You shouldn't be jumping or diving into the water from rock, bridges, jetties
or wharfs or kite surfing.
PICTON HAPPENINGS www.pictonresource.co.nz 29th April 2020 - Picton Resource Centre
Some water-based activities remain prohibited because they expose participants and others to
danger or may require search and rescue services.

Can I go walking in the bush with my family/household unit?
Short walks on easy trails are permitted, but long, backcountry tramping or overnight hiking is still
off-limits. While you are now able to travel within your region to find exercise, it is still best to stay
local and it is essential that you maintain physical distancing.

Can I go cycling on the road?
Yes, as long as you keep your distance from others. Now we’re in COVID-19 Alert Level 3, longer
rides within your region are also permitted.
Ensure you:
• If you see people while you’re out and about, give them a happy smile, say hello and check
they’re ok as you pass them, but don’t stop to talk unless there is an emergency. Maintain 2
metres physical distancing when you see other people.
• Make sure you tell someone in your household where you’re going and how long you plan to be
gone for — take a cell phone with you so you can be contacted or contact others if you need to.
• Thoroughly wash your hands once you return home.

Can I go mountain biking?
You can ride your bike on the road, or in local parks, as long as you keep your distance from others.
In COVID-19 Alert Level 3 mountain biking on known trails is permitted for experienced mountain
bikers only. Please remember this is not the time to be trying an activity like mountain biking for
the first time or riding steep and technical tracks.

Can I go fishing off a wharf, rocks or a beach?
Yes, fishing from a wharf or surfcasting from the beach is permitted. Fishing from rocks is not
recommended because of the increased risk.

Can I fish off my kayak?
Yes, you are able to fish off your kayak but keep close to the shoreline, stay within your ability, and
ensure the weather conditions are low risk.

Can I go to the gym or recreation centre?
No. Sporting facilities remain closed. This includes gyms.

Can I go to a yoga class?
No, not at COVID-19 Alert Level 3 as this would breach the requirements around gatherings. You
can continue to participate in yoga using online classes.

Is one on one personal training permitted if 2 metre distancing is maintained and we use a
park?
No, not at COVID-19 Alert Level 3 as this would breach the requirements around gatherings if your
personal trainer or coach is outside of your bubble. You can continue to participate in personal
training using online solutions.

Can we resume team trainings?
No. You can only train for team sports only within your bubble. Do not share equipment outside
of your bubble. That includes playing frisbee or kicking a ball with people outside of your bubble.

Are any form of organised sports with others outside of my bubble permitted?
No. Group activities with anyone outside of your bubble are not permitted. Sporting facilities must
remain shut. Equipment must not be shared outside of bubbles.

Can I ride my horse or pony?
Horse riding is allowed under Alert Level 3 if it can be done safely and in your local area.

Can I play golf, croquet, lawn bowls and tennis?
Only in limited circumstances. Public courts and courses are not open. Clubhouses, toilets, changing
facilities etc at private facilities will not be open to use. You'll need to make a contactless (e.g.
phone or online) appointment with a club if it is open. Stay strictly within your bubble to play, and

avoid any congregating. You will be
required to provide details for contact
 tracing, bring your own equipment,
abide by the hygiene rules of the club,
and only stay for the period of time that
you are participating in your sport.

 Can I go hunting?
Yes, you can hunt but only on private
land with the permission of the
 landowner and the relevant hunting
permit. Hunting is not allowed on public
 conservation land. Information about
hunting can be found at https://www.
 doc.govt.nz/news/issues/covid-19/.

Can I use a public outdoor tennis or
 basketball court?
You will need to check with your local
council if these facilities are open as
many will not be. You should also avoid
touching any hard surfaces (such as seats
or rails) as these may spread COVID-19.
