AN OASIS IN THE HEART OF MARULAN .. The garden featured on the right is a very old garden & is in the heart of Marulan. The garden is very sheltered and features fern houses, fruit trees, dozens of roses & many potted plants. Some of the fern houses have spectacular bromeliads such as the pink one on the right. Although we, like the rest of Australia are suffering from the drought, the garden continues to manage quite well mainly because it is old & established. The front is a picture of lavender & roses & a wonderful smoke bush. Along one boundary, & right up into the old apple tree, which does bear fruit every year, is a very old wisteria which is a delight each Spring. A GARDEN FOR A DRIER CLIMATE . Newer gardens are being planned around plants which require a great deal less water than some in the established gardens in Marulan and there are any number of drought resistant plants to choose from. Crushed limestone looks good on a driveway & in amongst plants, is easy maintenance & best of all keeps the weeds down in laid down fairly thickly. A drive around Marulan will give you ideas of what other residents are doing with gardens quite a lot of pots with flax and grasses, pebbles instead of grass (much easier on the water!). The little garden outside Marulan Butchery is managing to survive with lots of smaller flowers and it faces west which means it has a lot of wind to cope with too. discovermarulan.com.au | fb.com/discovermarulan Page 5

December 2019 was a month of highs and lows, with a number of our members and friends being sidelined due to illness. We hope that 2020 sees their lives returning to normal (or as close as possible). We were busy packing parcels for women affected by drought who otherwise might not have received a gift at Christmas, we were filling and delivering handbags for "Share the Dignity" and packed food hampers for delivery to Anglicare in Goulburn. The CWA was represented at the presentation days at both Marulan and Tallong schools where education awards were presented to a year 6 student going on to high school. Last year the Friday canteens at Marulan school were very well supported and we were able to give a sizeable donation back to the school. Our thanks to the parents for their support. Our year starts again in February 2020, so it's time to recharge the batteries. Our meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month and new members are always very welcome. 'Of the Sun' curated by Gina Mobayed, Aishah Kenton's 'Second Exit' and 'The Window' curated by the Gallery Volunteers. 'Of the Sun' brings together seven artists from across Australia - each of their distinct practices a rich contemplation of our relationship to the earth's natural elements and the role they can play in our personal journeys. The exhibition delves into an expanded understanding of the physical world through immersive experience and process, with practices across performance, painting and installation. 'Of the Sun' presents new commissions and key works from each artist, who as individuals are as bold and powerful as the work they make. Clothilde Bullen, Senior Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections and Exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, will open the exhibition. MARULAN AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS It is with a heavy heart that we announce that this year the Marulan Australia Day Committee has decided to cancel our entire event. This decision has not been made lightly and was done so in consultation with our major sponsor Gunlake Quarries, Marulan. The reasons for this decision were extensive and included: • Community safety concerns given the current air quality. • The committee rely heavily on the assistance from the local volunteer Fire Brigade. • Given the current events this fire season, road closures have been a regular expectation and with no end in sight to the fires we cannot guarantee all vendors will be able to attend. This also contributes additional community safety concerns if road closures occur during the event. The committee will be working hard to bring you a spectacular event in 2021. On behalf of the Marulan Australia Day Committee and Gunlake Quarries please accept our apologies and thank you for your understanding. As a show of support to our local fireies, the Committee and Gunlake will donate this year’s unspent sponsorship to the Marulan Rural Fire Brigade.
