2021 GUIDE MERRILLVILLE PARKS AND RECREATION SECTION THREE PROGRAMS AND CLASSES PILATES Pull out your gym mat and get ready to do a series of movements that will stabilize and strengthen your core. The moves may look simple, but they take a lot of precision and control. It’s not like doing a bunch of crunches; there’s a strong emphasis on technique. You’ll get stronger, more sculpted muscles and gain flexibility. You may also have better posture and a better sense of well-being. Pilates isn’t aerobic; it’s demanding, but it’s not the kind of workout that always works up a sweat. It’s all about concentration and breathing. But you’ll definitely feel it in your muscles during each exercise. Pilates’ main focus is on the core; however, you can expect to see strength gains in your arms and legs. Positions and movements used to activate core rely on extremities to control and/or apply loads to the core and likewise will benefit from pilates. MERRILLVILLE PARKS AND RECREATION 2021 GUIDE PARKS AND TRAIL SYSTEM SECTION FIVE TRAIL SYSTEM Merrillville has two large trails running through its corporate limits. The first trail is the Erie Lakawanna Trail, a 17.7-mile trail that starts in Hammond, Indiana, and travels to Crown Point, Indiana. The Erie Lakawanna Trail is the longest contiguous trail in Northwest Indiana. To access the trail, you can park just north of the Crown Point Government Center. Parking is provid- ed. The Chesapeake and Ohio Greenway trail (referred to as the C&O Greenway) winds through a tree-covered, wooded canopy past John A. Stefak Park and continues through to Broadway. Phase II of the C&O Greenway has been extended from Broadway under I-65 to Mississippi Street, where it will connect to a popular shopping area with several eateries and activities. The tunnel has reflective pavement to help brighten the way. There is also a small 1.5-mile trail at Pruzin Park that goes around the wetlands. You can spot deer, butterflies, geese, and other creatures on your walk. No bicycles are allowed. Parking is available, and there is a playground shelter nearby. There is also a new trail from Madison to the new Dean and Barbara White Community Center. PAGE 21
